Bespoke LED strip lighting is a design process, not a strip-light product. Start with the visual effect you want—a narrow accent, an even ceiling glow, a warm changing mood or saturated color—then design the cove, optics, control system, structure and maintenance access around that effect. LED tape, an aluminum channel and a power supply are only parts of the finished architectural system.

The most reliable method is to draw the detail, document the complete electrical and control specification, and build a full-scale mockup before construction. The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) puts the principle plainly: “LEDs have changed everything, except the physics of lighting.” Its cove-lighting guidance explains why geometry, aiming and surface reflectance determine whether a concealed source looks like a smooth wash or a row of bright dots. Read the IES cove-lighting guidance.

What makes an LED strip-light installation bespoke?

A bespoke installation is designed for a particular room, ceiling, viewing angle, material palette and control brief. The tape is selected only after those conditions are understood. Two identical strips can produce very different results when one sits in a shallow shelf and the other washes a deep ceiling cove.

Define the intended effect in plain language before specifying hardware:

  • Pinstripe or accent: a concentrated line that traces a recess, stair, joinery edge or architectural rhythm.
  • Soft indirect wash: a broad, low-glare reflection across a ceiling or wall.
  • Visual task light: controlled illumination for a shelf, work surface or display.
  • Scene-based atmosphere: independently controlled zones for arrival, dining, presentation or relaxation.
  • Color expression: a deliberate change in white appearance or saturated color.

Record the viewing positions, target surface, desired brightness relationship to other luminaires, operating hours and who will control the system. These decisions prevent a common mistake: choosing a tape by wattage or color temperature first and trying to force the architecture to fit it.

Choose the cove geometry from the effect, not a standard dimension

There is no universal “correct” cove depth or width. IES notes that a small cove can create a pinstripe, while a deeper and wider cove is needed for a soft, even ceiling glow. The required dimensions depend on the strip’s optical distribution, its distance from the target surface, the ceiling height and the reflectance of the finishes. IES explains the relationship between cove size and light distribution.

Draw the light path

In section, show the LED position, the cove lip, the ceiling or wall being illuminated, the beam spread and the likely line of sight from occupied areas. A source aimed too close to the lip can project a bright band; a source aimed too far away may waste light on an unintended surface. The drawing should show the finished trim and tolerances, not just a rectangle labelled “LED.”

Align the lip and fixture to suppress hotspots

IES recommends aligning the top of the cove lip with the top of the fixture so the source is hidden from normal views and the first bright patch is not exposed. Leave enough room for the intended wash and for a person to insert installation tools. A narrower opening may conceal the tape but also clips the beam, while an oversized opening can reveal the source from below.

Allow for real construction tolerances

Framing movement, plasterboard joints, uneven millwork and imperfect straightness become visible when a bright line grazes them. Detail continuous backing, a straight mounting surface and a way to adjust the channel during installation. Cantilevered cove ends need structural support; do not rely on the aluminum profile or adhesive tape to carry building loads.

Control hotspots with optics, surfaces and concealment

“Hotspot” usually means that individual LED emitters or a bright first reflection are visible instead of reading as a continuous line. Concealment is necessary but not sufficient: the target surface, beam spread and distance from the surface determine the visual result.

Use the target surface as part of the luminaire

Matte, light-colored surfaces generally produce a softer reflection than glossy or dark finishes. A dark ceiling can absorb much of the output, while a glossy surface can reveal streaks and reflections. Coordinate paint sheen, stone, timber and metal finishes with the lighting detail; a perfect strip installation cannot make a mirror-like surface look matte.

Specify distribution and aiming

Document the beam spread, orientation and aiming direction for every run. If the system uses a lens or an asymmetric optic, identify it in the schedule rather than leaving the installer to choose a profile on site. Keep the source out of direct view from seated and standing positions, including views reflected in glazing and polished joinery.

Use an aluminum channel for long, straight runs

An aluminum channel or heatsink can help maintain a straight line and remove heat from the tape. It is an accessory, not a complete lighting system, and it is not automatically compatible with every tape. Check the tape width, channel dimensions, lens, mounting method, bend radius, end caps and environmental rating before ordering. The IES cove guidance specifically recommends an aluminum channel or heatsink as an aid for long, straight runs. See the IES recommendation.

Select the color behavior and controls together

Color choice is not limited to a CCT number printed on a product box. Decide whether dimming should change color, whether white temperature should be independently adjustable, and whether saturated colors are part of the design. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) distinguishes three broad approaches. Review the DOE overview of color-tunable LED products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Approach What changes when controlled Where it can fit Design and wiring implications
Dim-to-warm Output decreases while the light becomes warmer. DOE describes products commonly designed around 2700–3000 K at full output and potentially as warm as 1800 K when dimmed. Residences, restaurants, hotel rooms, ballrooms and theaters where a warm evening shift is wanted. Brightness and color are linked. Confirm the driver and dimmer behavior across the full range.
Tunable white Warm and cool LED arrays are mixed to change white appearance. Intensity can be controlled independently on systems designed for that behavior. Projects needing selectable scenes or a stable color while reducing intensity. Understand the array arrangement, channel count, control method and cabling before detailing the run.
Full-color tuning Three or more LED colors mix to create white, tinted white or saturated hues. Theaters, theme parks, restaurants and feature spaces where color itself is architectural. Controls and wiring are more involved than a simple slide dimmer, and efficacy can be lower than fixed-white systems.

None of these behaviors is inherently best. Use fixed or stable white for a consistent ceiling wash, tunable white when the white point must change independently, dim-to-warm when a warm shift is part of dimming, and full-color only when colored light is an intentional design layer.

Write a complete specification before anyone orders components

For color-tunable work, IES advises documenting the light source, change type, control protocol, driver options and response, wiring, connectors, cable requirements, ordering channel, power consumption and dimming performance. Include distribution files, spectral information, color metrics and flicker reporting when those data are available. The IES article is dated August 2016; treat its comments about testing and reporting as historical context rather than a statement of current industry status. Read the IES color-tunable specification guidance.

Schedule item What to record
Light source Tape or module type, nominal color behavior, dimensions, cut intervals and photometric files.
Optics Beam spread, lens or diffuser, aiming direction and the target surface.
Electrical load Power per length, total connected load, voltage, allowance for driver losses and zoning.
Driver Location, capacity, dimming or color response, ventilation, service access and maximum supported run.
Controls Protocol, user interface, scene logic, independent channels and what happens after a power interruption.
Wiring and connectors Cable type and length limits, polarity or channel identification, connector compatibility and termination method.
Performance data Color metrics, flicker information, distribution files and the manufacturer’s stated operating conditions.
Construction Channel, lens, mounting, end caps, supports, access panels and finish coordination.

The sources do not establish one universal lumen output, CCT, CRI, voltage, cove dimension or maximum run length. Those values must come from the selected system and the actual project conditions.

Plan drivers, power and maintenance as architectural elements

Remote drivers should be coordinated with the architecture at the same time as the cove. A hidden driver that cannot be reached turns a small future failure into demolition. Show driver cabinets, access panels, ventilation and cable routes on the reflected ceiling plan and elevations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Divide long or complex runs into serviceable zones

Separate rooms, corners and scenes so a fault does not darken an entire floor. Keep voltage drop, connector count and driver capacity within the selected system’s documented limits. Do not infer a safe run length from another tape or from a similar-looking installation.

Provide a maintenance route

Maintenance access can be a removable cove fascia, an accessible ceiling zone or a lift-out shelf. Ensure that a technician can reach the tape, connectors, driver and controller without damaging finished surfaces. Record the exact tape, profile, lens and control address in the handover documents.

Confirm code and environmental requirements locally

Electrical, energy, fire, damp-location and outdoor-rating requirements depend on the jurisdiction, building use, product and installation. Obtain the applicable requirements from the project’s electrical and building professionals; the general design principles here do not replace those approvals.

Install a bespoke cove in a controlled sequence

  1. Approve the lighting intent. Mark viewing positions, target surfaces, desired color behavior, scenes and relative brightness.
  2. Build and review the section. Draw the lip, channel, optic, beam path, driver route, structural support and maintenance access at the real scale.
  3. Verify the system schedule. Match tape, channel, lens, driver, controller, connectors and cables; confirm loads and control response as one system.
  4. Prepare straight, supported mounting surfaces. Install backing and supports before finishes conceal the detail.
  5. Install channels and wiring. Keep channels aligned, observe polarity and channel identification, and leave serviceable slack at accessible connection points.
  6. Fit the tape and optics. Follow the specified orientation, cut intervals, bend limits and thermal contact requirements. Do not substitute a different lens or tape without design review.
  7. Commission by zone. Test full output, minimum output, color transitions, scene recall, power recovery and control latency.
  8. Inspect from occupied viewpoints. Check direct glare, reflected hotspots, scalloping, dark ends, mismatched color and unwanted light on adjacent surfaces.
  9. Complete handover records. Provide as-built locations, product data, driver settings, control addresses, replacement parts and maintenance access instructions.

Use a mockup before committing to the finished detail

A full-scale mockup is the fastest way to resolve uncertainty about cove depth, lip alignment, surface reflectance and color behavior. Build it with the proposed substrate, paint or finish, channel, lens, tape, driver and control interface—not a bright temporary strip that cannot reproduce the final optics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the mockup in the lighting conditions in which the room will operate. Look from standing and seated positions, from doorways and through reflective surfaces. IES’s practical advice is concise: “When in doubt, mock it up.” The Freedom Place at Old Parkland case study reports that the project team used mockups; 3000 K was selected for exterior illumination of cast stone, that choice informed most interior architectural lighting, and restroom coves used 5000 K. Those are project decisions, not a universal recipe. See the Freedom Place case study.

What project examples reveal—and what they do not

Case studies are useful for understanding decision-making, but their specifications should not be copied without the surrounding architecture and brief.

Project example Reported design decision Transferable lesson
Freedom Place at Old Parkland, Dallas Mockups informed the work; 3000 K exterior cast-stone illumination influenced most interiors, while restroom coves were 5000 K. Color temperature can be coordinated with material and context, and different rooms may need different behavior.
Chase Center Layered cove and linear lighting, independent lounge scenes, and LED tape for two team colors plus a base white. Hospitality areas used 3000 K and 90 CRI. A sports venue can use hospitality-oriented white light and separate scene controls; the 3000 K/90 CRI choice is not a general standard.

The Chase Center case study attributes the selection to Matt Levesque, founding principal at First Circle Design, who said: “3000K 90 CRI, which is atypical for sports venues, was selected to meet ownership’s objective to create a hospitality destination for their patrons.” Read the Chase Center case study.

Troubleshoot the problems that appear most often

Visible dots or a bright line at the lip

Check the source’s line of sight, lip alignment, distance to the target surface, lens choice and surface sheen. Repositioning the channel or changing the optic is usually more effective than simply reducing output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uneven ceiling or wall wash

Look for inconsistent cove depth, obstructed beam paths, joints, dark patches, tape orientation changes or a reflective finish. Recheck the section and compare the installed geometry with the approved mockup.

Color mismatch between sections

Verify that every section uses the same tape bin or specified color data, connector orientation, driver channel and control settings. Mixed product revisions can appear different even when their nominal CCT is identical.

Flicker, dropouts or a narrow dimming range

Check driver–controller compatibility, minimum load, cable terminations, channel addressing and the stated dimming response. Record the behavior at both maximum and minimum settings rather than judging only one scene.

Early failure or discoloration

Inspect thermal contact, channel continuity, driver loading, ventilation and operating hours. A channel helps transfer heat, but it cannot correct an overloaded or poorly ventilated installation.

A decision checklist for the design team

  • Is the goal a pinstripe, broad wash, task layer or color feature?
  • Can the source be hidden from every important viewing angle and reflection?
  • Does the cove provide room for the beam, tools, tolerances and structural support?
  • Are the target surfaces and finish sheens included in the mockup?
  • Is color behavior—fixed white, dim-to-warm, tunable white or full-color—defined independently from brightness?
  • Are driver locations, cable routes, controls and service access drawn?
  • Do tape, channel, lens, driver, controller and connectors form a documented compatible system?
  • Have electrical, fire, energy and environmental requirements been checked for the actual jurisdiction?
  • Has the final result been reviewed from occupied viewpoints before finishes are closed?

For additional coordination context, IES has also covered a GSA and PNNL LED-and-controls guide release, which is useful background when a project team is aligning controls documentation and commissioning responsibilities. Read the IES guide announcement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do LED strip lights always need an aluminum channel?

No. An aluminum channel or heatsink is especially useful for long, straight runs, thermal management and a clean optical line, but compatibility with the specific tape, lens, mounting method and environment must be checked.

How deep should a cove be for LED strip lights?

There is no universal depth. A shallow cove can create a narrow accent, while a deeper and wider cove is generally needed for a soft, even wash. Set the dimension from the desired effect, beam spread, target surface and viewing angles, then verify it with a full-scale mockup.

What is the difference between tunable white and RGBW strip lighting?

Tunable white adjusts between warmer and cooler whites, often with separate warm and cool LED arrays. Full-color systems mix three or more colors to produce white, tinted white or saturated hues; they require more complex control and wiring.
