Timber battens work best when their lines, shadows and gaps are designed as one system. Set the visual job first—emphasis, screening, privacy or acoustic control—then coordinate profile, orientation, spacing, substrate, fixing method and finish. That sequence prevents a wall that looks attractive in a sample but feels too busy, too open or too costly when installed.

The economical choice is rarely the cheapest strip of timber. A sound allowance includes battens, clips or tracks, substrate preparation, cutting, finishing, access, labour and future care. The guidance below gives a repeatable way to make those decisions without treating a spacing rule, acoustic rating or finish claim as universal.
Define what the battens must do
Begin with a sentence that describes the intended outcome. “Create a warm vertical feature behind the reception desk” leads to different dimensions and spacing than “screen a west-facing window” or “reduce reverberation in a meeting room.” A batten layout can perform several jobs, but one usually dominates.

Emphasise a surface or element
Repeated lines draw the eye. Use them to frame a doorway, continue a ceiling line, mark a stair or make a low wall appear taller. Keep the field of battens calm around the feature; too many changes in direction compete with the element you meant to highlight.
Screen views while admitting light
For a privacy or sun-screening surface, the gap is a performance decision as well as a visual one. A wider opening consumes less material but permits more sight lines and light. Model the view from the actual eye height and approach angle rather than judging only from a straight-on elevation.
Add depth and shadow
Depth, face width and the distance from the substrate determine the shadow line. A shallow profile with a narrow gap reads as a fine texture; a deeper profile with a generous gap reads as a strong grille. Sample both in the room or on the facade, because computer elevations often understate the effect of changing daylight.

Support acoustic treatment
Battens alone are not an acoustic specification. Absorption depends on the complete build-up—batten profile, open area, backing, cavity and adjacent surfaces. If acoustic performance is required, use documentation for the exact panel or assembly, not a rating copied from a different finish or spacing.
Set the visual rhythm with profile, orientation and gap
Profile controls the scale of the line
Record four dimensions before ordering: face width, depth, clear gap and overall length. Face width sets the apparent beat; depth sets relief and shadow; gap determines how much background remains visible. A bevel, chamfer or rounded edge catches light differently from a square edge, so specify the edge treatment rather than relying on a generic “timber batten” description.

Choose vertical or horizontal lines deliberately
Vertical installation generally makes a facade or wall feel taller. Horizontal installation can accentuate a storey, plinth or other building element. This tendency is described in the Alteria facade specification guidance; it is a design direction, not a guarantee for every proportion or viewing distance.
Check how the orientation meets corners, window reveals, skirtings, soffits and doors. A vertical field that stops abruptly at a head or sill can look unfinished, while horizontal battens may require visible returns or end caps at a corner. Draw those junctions at the same scale as the face and gap, not as a symbolic line.

Use the face-width rule as a starting point, not a law
The same guidance suggests beginning with a clear gap approximately equal to the batten face width, then adjusting to the desired result. For a 40 mm face, that means testing a 40 mm clear opening first; it does not mean every project should finish at 40 mm. Tighten the gap for density and screening, or open it for a lighter, more economical rhythm, then check the resulting shadow and privacy.
Spacing changes quantity geometrically. Across a fixed run, increasing the clear gap reduces the number of battens required; reducing it increases both material and fixing points. That inference does not provide a universal percentage saving. It also ignores waste, end cuts, access and labour, so use a take-off rather than a percentage promise.
A step-by-step design and specification method
- Measure the real field. Record finished width, height, corners, openings, slopes and service penetrations. Note where a batten must be full length and where a joint can be hidden.
- Choose the dominant purpose. Label each zone as feature, screen, facade articulation or acoustic lining. If a zone has two purposes, write the priority so a later compromise is transparent.
- Make a physical or full-scale test. Fix several profiles at two or three gaps to a board, then view it from the room entrance, the street and the nearest oblique angle. Include a corner and an opening if they occur in the project.
- Set orientation and termination details. Decide how lines turn, stop and align with adjacent materials. Resolve end caps, returns, shadow gaps and access panels before the batten count is final.
- Calculate the quantity. For each run, divide the usable width by the repeating pitch (face width plus clear gap), round for the actual edge condition, and add allowance for cutting and damaged pieces. Count separate lengths by species, finish and profile.
- Select the fixing build-up. Confirm substrate flatness, battens or rails, clips, screws, cavity depth and tolerances. A concealed system may change the required backing and the installation sequence.
- Specify finish by exposure. State whether the work is interior, sheltered exterior or fully exposed, and nominate the visible faces, cut ends and touch-up procedure. Do not assume a factory coating protects a site-cut end.
- Check performance documents. Where fire, acoustic, moisture or structural requirements apply, obtain the test or assessment for the exact profile, spacing, backing and coating. Record the document revision with the specification.
- Price the installed outcome. Include preparation, delivery, lifting, access, installation time, finishing, protection during other trades and planned maintenance—not only the timber line item.
Make the economics visible
A useful estimate separates fixed and variable costs. Substrate repairs, setting-out, access equipment and mobilisation may remain nearly the same whether the gap is 30 mm or 60 mm. Timber quantity, clips and fixing time generally change with the number of battens. A wide gap can therefore lower the variable portion while leaving the expensive preparation untouched.

| Cost item | Why it changes the budget | Check before approval |
|---|---|---|
| Timber or panel material | Species, grade, profile, length and waste affect the take-off. | Price the specified finish and realistic cutting allowance. |
| Rails, clips and fasteners | Closer spacing and heavier profiles can require more fixing points or stronger support. | Confirm the manufacturer’s fixing layout for the substrate. |
| Preparation | Uneven walls, membranes, insulation and service zones may require a new backing system. | Survey the surface before selecting a clip or track. |
| Cutting and installation | Many short pieces, corners and openings increase setting-out and labour time. | Count junctions and access constraints, not just square metres. |
| Finishing and protection | On-site coating, masking and protection add time and can affect sequencing. | Decide which work is factory-applied and which is site-applied. |
| Future maintenance | Exposure, coating quality and accessible details influence later cleaning and recoating effort. | Obtain current care instructions for the exact product. |
Do not reduce spacing solely to save timber if the surface must screen a view, conceal services or meet an acoustic objective. Conversely, do not specify a dense rhythm for a decorative wall when a more open test gives the same visual weight. Cost control comes from matching density to purpose.

There are three common specification paths: individual strips fixed to a prepared backing, a proprietary clip-and-track system, and prefinished acoustic panels. The right choice depends on access, repetition, tolerances and required documentation.
| Approach | Useful characteristics | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Site-built individual battens | Maximum freedom to vary species, face, depth, gap and direction on site. | Who sets out the rhythm, how are ends finished, and how will coating and quality control be managed? |
| Click-on timber battens | The Click-on Timber Battens listing describes configurable timber species, profiles, spacing and coatings with concealed clip-and-track fixing for interior and exterior applications. | Verify the selected species, coating, clip spacing, substrate, exposure limits and compliance documents; the listing’s capabilities do not automatically apply to every variant. |
| Prefinished acoustic panels | The Screenwood Panels listing describes prefinished, preassembled linear batten panels, with solid-timber and fibreboard variants and multiple profiles. | Confirm panel module, field cutting, joint treatment, backing and the exact acoustic and fire documentation. The listing states an NRC of up to 1.0 for its products; treat that as a supplier claim for a specified configuration, not a universal result. |
Supplier listings are useful for identifying system features, but they are not independent comparative testing. Ask for the technical sheet, installation manual, finish schedule and compliance evidence for the exact order code. A concealed fixing statement for one profile or coating should not be transferred to another.
Choose finish for exposure and whole-life care
Finish selection balances appearance, protection, initial cost and the work required later. The WoodSolutions technical finish guidance, revised in September 2015, explains that higher-quality products can carry higher initial costs, while lower-quality products and details may create greater ongoing maintenance demands. Use it as background, then check current manufacturer instructions and applicable standards because the guide is not a current project-specific maintenance schedule.
Interior applications
For a dry interior feature, decide whether the timber should remain visibly natural, be tinted, painted or factory prefinished. A clear finish can highlight variation in grain and end matching, while paint makes replacement pieces easier to blend if the same preparation and colour system is retained. Specify how dust will be removed without polishing the finish unevenly.

Sheltered and exposed exterior work
Exterior exposure adds ultraviolet light, wind-driven rain, moisture movement and harder access. Detail drainage, ventilation, end-grain treatment, stand-off from wet surfaces and replaceable components. Treat every cut, notch and penetration according to the coating manufacturer’s instructions; a factory finish does not eliminate site repair.
Plan maintenance without inventing an interval
No fixed maintenance interval is established by the cited material. Instead, define an inspection trigger: inspect after the first wet and hot seasons, after unusual weather, and whenever coating breakdown, movement, staining or loose fixings appear. The actual cleaning or recoating interval must come from the selected finish manufacturer and the site’s exposure.

Acoustics
Ask whether the requirement is absorption, isolation or simply visual softening. An NRC value describes absorption under a test configuration; it does not prove that a wall will block voices or satisfy a room’s complete acoustic brief. For any stated rating, match the product variant, open area, backing, cavity and test report.
Fire and material compliance
Timber species, coatings, adhesives, backing boards and cavities can change fire behaviour. Obtain the required classification or assessment for the complete assembly and jurisdiction. Do not rely on a generic “compliant” label from a different profile or finish.
Fixing and movement
Timber moves with moisture. Allow for movement at ends and joints, keep fixing details compatible with the substrate, and avoid trapping water behind exterior battens. Confirm tolerances and access for replacing a damaged piece before the field is closed.

Common failures and practical fixes
- The wall looks too busy. Increase the gap, simplify profile changes or reserve dense spacing for a smaller feature zone. Re-test from the normal viewing distance.
- The screen does not provide privacy. Check oblique sight lines and evening lighting; rotate the profile, reduce the opening or add a secondary layer rather than assuming a straight-on view is representative.
- Lines drift at openings. Establish a datum and a repeatable set-out around doors and windows. Decide whether the opening breaks the rhythm intentionally or aligns with a batten centreline.
- Edges reveal raw cuts. Add end caps, returns or a shadow gap and specify the cut-end treatment before installation begins.
- The estimate is unexpectedly high. Separate material quantity from preparation, access and labour. A wider gap may reduce strips but cannot remove a difficult substrate or a high-access installation.
- A performance claim cannot be verified. Pause procurement and request the exact technical document, test configuration and installation limits. Substitute a different system only after checking that its detailing and finish are compatible.
Examples of proportioning decisions
Feature wall behind a counter
Make the counter and signage the visual priority. Test a moderate face and gap, keep the field consistent behind the sign, and use a controlled termination at the side returns. A site-built system may be appropriate when the wall has several small penetrations and the designer needs to adjust individual lengths.
Two-storey facade element
Use vertical lines when the intention is to reinforce height; use horizontal lines to mark a band or floor transition. Resolve corners, window reveals and drainage before comparing species or coatings. A clip-and-track system can help maintain a repeatable set-out, but verify its exterior exposure and fixing documentation for the chosen variant.
Meeting-room acoustic lining
Start with the room’s reverberation target and the area available for treatment. Compare a documented preassembled panel with a custom batten-and-backing build-up. If a supplier cites NRC up to 1.0, confirm the exact panel, backing and test report before using that number in a compliance submission.
Specification checklist before you order
- Purpose and priority for every battened zone.
- Species or board type, grade, face, depth, edge and lengths.
- Orientation, clear gap, pitch and treatment at corners and openings.
- Substrate, rails, clips, fasteners, cavity and movement allowances.
- Interior or exterior exposure, coating system, cut-end treatment and protection.
- Quantity take-off with waste, access, labour and finishing included.
- Current fixing, acoustic, fire and environmental documentation for the exact variant.
- Cleaning, inspection and replacement access agreed with the owner.
The most reliable timber-batten design is the one whose visual rhythm survives a close-up detail, a long view, a realistic budget and the maintenance conditions of the site. Treat the face, gap, orientation, fixing and finish as a single specification, and adjust density only after the required screening or performance has been demonstrated.
