How to Do Freezer Paper Appliqué: A Turned-Edge Guide

Freezer paper helps shape a turned edge: cut a finished-size template, leave a fabric allowance, press it over the template, then sew the prepared shape to a background.

To do freezer paper appliqué, cut a paper template to the finished shape, press it temporarily to fabric, trim the fabric with a seam allowance, then turn and press that allowance over the template edge. The prepared shape is sewn to a background by hand or machine. The paper helps form the edge; it is not part of the finished appliqué.

What you need

  • Freezer paper and an appliqué pattern
  • Fabric for the appliqué and a foundation fabric or background
  • Pen or pencil for tracing
  • Sharp-tip scissors
  • An iron; a mini iron can be useful for small shapes
  • Optional: a water-soluble glue stick to hold fabric or the prepared shape temporarily
  • Optional: liquid or spray starch to help form a crisp turned edge
  • Thread suited to the chosen hand or machine appliqué stitch

These supplies are drawn from the materials listed by AllPeopleQuilt and tutorial descriptions from Connecting Threads. Glue and starch are aids, not requirements of the method.

How to prepare a freezer-paper appliqué shape

  1. Trace and cut the template. Trace the pattern on the dull side of freezer paper and cut out the shape at its intended finished size. The template represents the appliqué’s final outline; fabric must extend beyond it to turn under.
  2. Position and press the template. Follow the paper and project instructions for orientation. AllPeopleQuilt places the shiny side against the fabric’s wrong side and presses it in place.
  3. Cut with a seam allowance. Cut fabric around the template, leaving enough allowance to turn over its edge. Published examples vary: AllPeopleQuilt specifies 3/16 inch, while the BERNINA machine-appliqué ebook describes about 1/4 inch. Use the allowance specified by your pattern rather than treating either measurement as universal.
  4. Turn and press the edge. Begin on a gently curved section. Use the tip of a hot, dry iron to fold the allowance over the paper edge, pressing a little at a time, then let it cool. For a tight curve, make shallow snips in the allowance so it can lie smoothly. At an inner point, clip close to—but not through—the paper. Tilda’s Bluebell Wreath Pillow instructions describe using liquid starch on the allowance before turning and pressing; Colourcraft also describes a spray-starch approach.
  5. Remove the template at the appropriate stage. The timing depends on the construction. Some patterns have you remove it before stitching; others leave it in while sewing and remove it afterward. In AllPeopleQuilt’s approach, excess foundation fabric behind the stitched appliqué is trimmed, then the paper is loosened and peeled away. BERNINA’s ebook describes opening the foundation behind the shape for removal.
  6. Place and sew the shape. Position the prepared appliqué on the background and secure it using the hand or machine stitch called for by the project. A small amount of water-soluble glue can help hold it in place temporarily, if the project permits.

Choosing starch, glue, and a sewing method

Starch or glue

Starch is used while turning and pressing the seam allowance to help form a crisp edge. A water-soluble glue stick can instead help hold fabric or the finished prepared shape temporarily. These products serve different practical purposes, and the cited instructions do not establish a controlled comparison or require either one.

Hand or machine appliqué

A prepared freezer-paper shape works with either hand or machine appliqué. Choose the stitch and workflow specified by the pattern and suited to the project. The available instructions support both methods but do not establish a universal winner for speed, durability, or appearance.

Common trouble spots

  • The edge will not turn smoothly: Check that the allowance is wide enough for the shape and make shallow clips on tight curves. Press small sections rather than trying to fold a long curve at once.
  • A point looks bulky: Clip the allowance close to the template at an inner point, taking care not to cut through the paper or the turned finished edge.
  • The finished shape is the wrong size: Confirm that the paper template is cut to the finished outline and that the fabric is cut larger to provide the turning allowance.
  • The paper is difficult to remove: Check the project’s construction sequence. Depending on the method, it may be removed before stitching or loosened and peeled away afterward; some constructions require access through the foundation behind the appliqué.
