Traditional kintsugi repairs broken ceramics with urushi lacquer and finishes the visible seams with powdered gold, silver, or another metal. The work happens in stages—joining, filling, controlled curing, smoothing, and decorating—and the metal is a finish, not the adhesive. For a first repair, choose materials by their actual formulation and intended use: genuine urushi is traditional but can severely irritate skin, while some beginner kits use modern materials and may be decorative only.
What kintsugi is—and what the gold does
Kintsugi (金継ぎ, “golden joinery”) is a Japanese ceramic repair method in which urushi lacquer joins and repairs broken pottery, and powdered metal highlights the seam. The Government of Japan describes pottery joined with urushi and decorated with gold or silver powder; see Highlighting Japan, August 2020. The finished line is meant to remain visible. Rather than disguising a break, kintsugi makes it part of the object’s history and appearance, a point also described by the Urasoe Art Museum and Tokyo’s official travel guide.

It does not hold the fragments together. |---|---|---|
| Traditional urushi kit | Uses urushi and a metal finish; requires skin precautions, controlled curing, and careful work. Confirm the kit’s instructions and suitability for the intended use. | Those seeking a traditional material approach who can manage the handling and curing requirements. |
| Modern beginner kit | May use epoxy or imitation metal rather than urushi and precious-metal powder. Read the formulation, cure instructions, and food-contact claims; some kits are decorative only. | Those prioritizing a simplified project, provided the materials meet their needs. |
| Instructor-led workshop | Offers guided practice and materials. The Nikkei National Museum workshop and Urasoe Art Museum course describe workshop instruction. | Beginners who want help with alignment, materials, curing, or safe handling. |
| Professional restorer | A craftsperson can assess complex breaks or valuable pieces. Tokyo’s official guide describes services that connect customers with kintsugi crafters. | Valuable, sentimental, or structurally complicated ceramics. |
When shopping, search for “traditional urushi kintsugi repair kit with gold powder,” then verify that the product actually specifies urushi, identifies its finish, and provides clear instructions. A kit being called “kintsugi” does not by itself establish its materials, food suitability, or intended durability.

Materials and workspace
- Clean, dry ceramic fragments that fit together, with a plan for keeping them aligned while the repair sets.
- For the traditional approach, genuine urushi lacquer and the compatible filling and smoothing materials specified by the kit or instructor.
- Gold, silver, or other metal powder and the fine brushes or tools needed to apply the specified finish.
- Gloves, barrier protection, and a work surface protected from accidental contact or drips.
- A controlled curing space suited to the product’s instructions. Urushi requires a controlled curing process; the Urushi Archive treats workspace preparation, safety, and curing as dedicated parts of the process.
How to do a beginner kintsugi repair
- Inspect, clean, and dry-fit. Check how the fragments meet before applying anything. Dry-fit them and decide how you will hold them in alignment during the initial join.
- Join and fill. Apply the kit’s compatible adhesive and filler sparingly, following its layer-by-layer instructions. Remove excess material before it cures, without disturbing the alignment.
- Cure under controlled conditions. Let the repair harden using the humidity and time guidance for the material. Do not substitute a guess or ordinary room conditions for product-specific directions.
- Smooth the repair. When the material has hardened as directed, level the seam carefully so the repaired surface meets the ceramic without rounding the edges.
- Coat the seam. Apply the colored or red lacquer layer specified for receiving the metal powder. The Urasoe Art Museum describes this prepared lacquer-and-powder finishing approach.
- Apply the metal finish. Dust or place the powder onto the prepared lacquer as instructed. This is the decorative stage; the underlying repair must already provide the join.
- Complete the cure and inspect. Wait for the specified full cure. Check the join and finish before deciding whether the object is appropriate for display or use.
Urushi safety and whether a repaired vessel can be used
Urushi can cause severe skin irritation. The Nikkei National Museum advises gloves, Vaseline on exposed skin, and keeping lacquer away from unintended surfaces; the Urushi Archive also puts safety and workspace preparation before opening lacquer.
- Wear gloves and follow the kit or instructor’s barrier-protection advice. Avoid skin contact and protect surrounding surfaces.
- Prepare the curing workspace before opening lacquer, and keep the material away from unintended areas.
- For accidental exposure or other safety questions, follow the product’s safety directions rather than improvising treatment.
A kintsugi repair is not automatically suitable for food or drink. That depends on the exact lacquer and other materials, whether they have fully cured, and the quality of the repair. Government and studio sources describe repaired pottery continuing in use, but this does not establish that every contemporary kit or repaired vessel is food-safe. Use a vessel for food or drink only when the product instructions or a qualified instructor explicitly support that use and all curing requirements have been met; otherwise, keep it decorative.

If you cannot safely handle urushi, do not proceed with an urushi kit at home. Choose a workshop with instruction or a different repair approach whose materials and intended use are clear. For a valuable or sentimental piece, or one with a complicated break, consult a professional restorer before applying adhesive or filler: an irreversible home repair can make later restoration harder.
