Reverse appliqué makes a design by cutting an opening in the top fabric so a contrasting fabric underneath shows through. For a first project, use two stable fabrics, choose a simple motif, secure the layers, cut the top fabric, then stitch around the opening by hand or machine.
What is reverse appliqué?
In regular, or onlaid, appliqué, a fabric motif is placed on top of a background. Reverse appliqué swaps those positions: you cut the design from the upper fabric, and the fabric beneath forms the visible motif. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History describes the technique as cutting the pattern silhouette from the background fabric and filling the openings with contrasting fabric from underneath.

What supplies do you need?
- Two stable, contrasting fabrics, such as quilting cotton
- A template or printed motif
- A fabric marking pencil or pen
- Thread and needles for hand stitching, or a sewing machine for machine stitching
- Small, sharp scissors for controlled cuts inside the fabric
- An iron if using fusible adhesive
The fusible machine approach in the American Quilter’s Society tutorial uses paper-backed iron-on fusible web, such as Soft Fuse. Hand work does not require a sewing machine. Appliqué can be used on quilts, garments and home accessories, as outlined in this University of Illinois guide.
How to do reverse appliqué by hand
- Choose a simple motif. Start with a shape that has gentle curves rather than many tight points. Select contrasting fabrics so the cutout is easy to see.
- Mark the design. Trace or draw the motif on the upper fabric. Keep the cloth flat while marking so the lines do not distort.
- Layer and secure the fabrics. Place the contrasting underlayer behind the marked top fabric. Baste or pin the layers so they stay aligned as you work.
- Cut the opening. Cut the motif from the upper fabric with small, sharp scissors, taking care not to cut the underlayer. For a turned-edge finish, leave about a quarter inch beyond the marked line as a folding allowance, following the Illinois State Museum’s traditional method.
- Turn and stitch the edge. Ease or clip the allowance where needed, fold the raw edge under, and sew it to the lower fabric with small, even stitches. Work slowly around curves to keep the edge smooth.
How to do reverse appliqué by machine
- Trace the motif. If using fusible web, trace the design on the paper side as directed in the AQS method.
- Cut the shapes. Use small, sharp scissors to snip out the marked shapes. Accurate cutting matters because the cut edge defines the motif’s silhouette.
- Fuse the layers. Iron the fused top fabric onto the contrasting background, following the fusible product’s directions.
- Stitch around the openings. Sew around the cut edges to secure them. The AQS tutorial shows stitching through a quilt sandwich, allowing the stitching to function as quilting too.
Hand or machine: which method should you choose?

Choose hand work when you want close control of a turned edge. Choose machine work when you are making repeated shapes or want stitching to do double duty in a quilt sandwich.

How to avoid common problems
- Distorted shapes: Keep the upper fabric flat while marking and cutting, and secure the layers before cutting.
- Ragged or uneven cutouts: Use small, sharp scissors and cut carefully; an inaccurate edge changes the finished motif silhouette.
- Lumpy curves: Work slowly, easing or clipping the turned allowance where appropriate. Practise gentle curves before trying tight turns.
- Layers shifting: Baste, pin or use fusible adhesive suited to your method before stitching.
A historical example
The Smithsonian documents a quilt by M. Campbell dated 1795 as a rare signed example of the technique, with reverse appliqué in its center panel and eight border motifs. The collection record reports quilting at seven stitches to the inch; that measurement describes this specific quilt, not a general requirement for reverse appliqué.
