To download a McMaster-Carr 3D model, find the part in the catalog, open its product page, and choose one of the CAD files offered for that specific item. McMaster-Carr lists formats including STEP, SLDPRT, and Parasolid (.X_T); availability and model detail can vary by part. If you use SolidWorks, its add-in can search for and insert models directly into an assembly.
Download a CAD model from the product page
- Find the component. Search McMaster-Carr by part name, dimensions, or other specifications, then open the matching product page.
- Check the CAD options. Look for the CAD download options on the product page. McMaster-Carr says its library includes models for more than 700,000 parts, but that does not mean every file type or model variant is offered for every product. McMaster-Carr CAD Models
- Choose a file for your CAD software and task. Select an available format and model detail that suit your application. Download the file and open or import it using your CAD software.
McMaster-Carr lists STEP, SLDPRT, and Parasolid (.X_T) formats. For many parts, it also offers simplified, non-threaded models intended to load faster and run more smoothly in large assemblies. Feature-rich models, simplified models, and drawings are not guaranteed for every catalog item. McMaster-Carr says it builds and maintains its models and updates them in response to feedback, manufacturer updates, and product changes; that is the supplier’s description of its process.
Choose the right format and model detail

File formats are not interchangeable promises of identical editability. Check the downloaded model in your CAD application and use the representation that supports your design work.
Insert parts with the SolidWorks add-in
The add-in provides a way to search for McMaster-Carr models and insert them into a SolidWorks assembly. McMaster-Carr lists Windows 10 or newer, SolidWorks 2017 or newer, and an internet connection as requirements. Firewall or security approval may also be needed. Its page names add-in version 2.4.0.0; confirm the current version and requirements on the McMaster-Carr SolidWorks Add-In page before installing.

McMaster-Carr’s SolidWorks file guidance differs by SolidWorks version:
- SolidWorks 2022 or newer: select SolidWorks files.
- SolidWorks 2017–2021: select Parasolid files.
After inserting parts, the add-in can replace an existing McMaster-Carr CAD model and add part numbers and descriptions to a bill of materials. If a model is missing or will not open
- No CAD option appears: the specific product may not have a downloadable model, or may not offer the format you need. The library’s overall model count does not guarantee per-part coverage.
- Your software rejects the file: try another offered format that your CAD application supports. For the SolidWorks add-in, follow the version-specific format guidance above.
- A large assembly loads slowly: check whether a simplified, non-threaded model is available for the component.
- The add-in cannot connect or install: verify that your SolidWorks and Windows versions meet the listed requirements, that an internet connection is available, and whether firewall or security approval is required.
