- Choose a tool such as Generate Image, image editing, video generation, or another feature available to your account and region.
- Enter a prompt, adjust the available settings, and generate your results.
- Download an image when you are satisfied with it. Adobe’s documented Firefly web workflow supports JPG and PNG downloads, with a maximum downloaded image resolution of 2,000 × 2,000 pixels.
There is no need to download a “Firefly for PC” or “Firefly for Mac” installer from a third-party website. A file claiming to be an unofficial Firefly desktop installer, cracked version, or standalone Generative Fill program is not the normal Adobe distribution route and may contain malware or unwanted software.
How to download the Firefly mobile app
Adobe also offers an official Firefly app for iPhone and Android. Use the app store built into your device rather than downloading an APK or installation package from an unrelated website.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the Apple App Store.
- Search for Adobe Firefly AI Video & Photo.
- Check that the developer is Adobe Inc.
- Install the app, open it, and sign in with your Adobe account.
The iPhone listing describes the app as free with in-app purchases. The available tools include text-to-image generation, AI video, sound effects, background removal, Generative Fill, and Prompt to Edit.
Android phones and tablets
- Open Google Play on your Android device.
- Search for Adobe Firefly.
- Confirm that the listed developer is Adobe before installing.
- Open the app and sign in.
App names, features, availability, and entitlements can vary by country, device, account, and rollout status. If the official app does not appear in your store, do not substitute an unofficial APK; check Adobe’s current availability information or use the web app.
Does Firefly have Generative Fill as a separate download?
No. Generative Fill is a feature inside Adobe’s image-generation and editing workflows, particularly Photoshop; it is not a standalone application that you download separately.

In Photoshop, the basic workflow is:
- Open an image.
- Use a selection tool to select the area you want to change.
- Choose Generative Fill.
- Describe what you want to add or change, or leave the prompt empty to fill the selection based on surrounding pixels.
- Generate variations and choose the result that best fits the image.
Depending on your Photoshop release, account, region, and rollout, the model picker may include Adobe models such as Firefly Image 5, Firefly Fill & Expand, and Firefly Image 1, as well as partner models. The available model list is not necessarily identical for every user.
How to install Photoshop for Firefly-powered editing
Choose Photoshop rather than looking for a “Firefly Generative Fill download” if you need detailed control over a finished painting, photograph, illustration, or composite.
- Sign in to Adobe Home with your Adobe account.
- Open the Apps tab.
- Find Photoshop and select Download.
- Allow the Adobe Creative Cloud desktop application to manage the installation.
- Launch Photoshop, open an image, and use its generative tools from the contextual task bar or relevant menus.
Photoshop is a different product from the Firefly web app. It is the better choice for painters and photographers who need layers, masks, selections, blend modes, compositing, retouching, and precise manual corrections around AI-generated edits. Firefly is quicker for prompt-led creation and lightweight editing; Photoshop provides the broader working environment.

Firefly’s “AI photo editor”: what it can and cannot replace
“True AI photo editor” is promotional wording rather than a precise product category. Firefly can perform useful AI-assisted edits from natural-language instructions, but it does not replace every conventional photo-editing function.

Firefly’s Prompt to Edit workflow can help you add or remove objects, change backgrounds, and refine details by describing the change. This is convenient when the desired edit is easy to explain. For example, a prompt such as “add a warm painted-paper texture behind the subject, keeping the subject unchanged” communicates a different goal from “remove the distracting sign at the left edge and reconstruct the wall.”
For a painting workflow, Firefly is useful for brainstorming compositions, creating reference variations, extending a scanned canvas, removing distractions from a reference photograph, or testing color and background ideas. Photoshop is preferable when you need to preserve an editable layered file, make exact selections, paint masks manually, or combine generated content with your own artwork under close control.
What you need before using Firefly
- An Adobe account: Firefly access requires signing in.
- A supported browser: Adobe documents Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and Safari.
- A stable internet connection: Firefly’s cloud-based generation requires connectivity; Photoshop’s generative features also require an internet connection.
- A supported country and entitlement: availability can depend on your location, account, plan, feature, and rollout status.
- Compatible source files: Adobe documents JPG, PNG, and WebP among common upload formats for Generative Fill workflows. HEIC support has specific limitations, including a stated Safari desktop or laptop condition for the documented reference workflow.
For Photoshop desktop, check Adobe’s current requirements before installing. The documented Photoshop 27.x-and-later requirements include 8 GB minimum RAM, supported Windows or macOS versions, AVX2/SSE 4.2 support on relevant Windows hardware, and—on the stated Windows configuration—a compatible DirectX 12 GPU with at least 1.5 GB of GPU memory. Exact requirements vary by operating system and Photoshop release.
Is Adobe Firefly free?
Firefly has limited free access, but “free” does not mean unlimited generation. Adobe describes free daily generations for trying core mobile features, while additional access can come through a Firefly subscription or a generative-credit entitlement.
Paid Creative Cloud, Adobe Express, Adobe Firefly, and Adobe Stock plans can include plan-specific monthly generative credits. The number of credits and the rate at which they are consumed may vary with the feature, output resolution, model, subscription tier, promotion, region, and account. For that reason, do not rely on an old article quoting a fixed number of generations or a permanent unlimited plan.

Projects, preferences, and generative credits may sync between supported web and mobile experiences, but the exact entitlement is account- and plan-dependent. If a feature is locked, first check the plan and remaining credits rather than reinstalling the app.
Commercial use and Content Credentials
Adobe says outputs made with Adobe Firefly models can be used in commercial projects and describes those models as trained on licensed content and public-domain content where copyright has expired. Adobe also says it automatically attaches Content Credentials to generated content.
Scope that assurance carefully: it applies to outputs generated with Adobe Firefly models, not automatically to every partner model that may appear in a model picker. For commercial illustration, client work, product images, or book covers, record which model and workflow you used and review the terms that apply to your specific account and region.

- Check the address. Make sure you are using the official firefly.adobe.com domain, not a lookalike download site.
- Check your connection. Firefly generation is an online service, so a browser can load normally while generation still fails because of connectivity or service issues.
- Sign out and back in. This can refresh an account entitlement or credit status.
- Try a supported browser. Update Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari and temporarily disable extensions that block scripts or cookies.
- Check availability. Country restrictions, account type, feature rollout, model availability, and generative-credit limits can make one tool unavailable while another works.
- For Photoshop, check Creative Cloud. Confirm that Photoshop installed successfully, is updated, and is signed in to the intended Adobe account.
- Check the computer. If Photoshop is slow or cannot use generative features, compare the computer with Adobe’s current operating-system, RAM, processor, GPU, and internet requirements.
Reinstalling a supposed Firefly desktop installer will not solve a missing web entitlement or a regional feature restriction. Identify whether the problem is browser access, account access, credits, service connectivity, or Photoshop compatibility first.
Optional learning resource for Photoshop and Firefly
Firefly itself does not require a desktop download, but Photoshop’s larger toolset takes practice. Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a Book 2025 Release is an official Adobe-supported training workbook whose lessons include Photoshop and Firefly generative AI. It is a reasonable option for beginners who prefer structured, project-based instruction rather than isolated tutorials. Check the exact edition, format, stock, and regional availability before buying; a newer web edition may also be listed by the publisher.
