The legitimate way to download an iStock video without the iStock watermark is to obtain the licensed file through iStock. That normally means buying the clip with credits or a single-file purchase, downloading it through an eligible video subscription, or claiming a clip that iStock has officially designated as free.
The watermarked Preview or comp file is for testing and sample layouts—not for a finished or publicly available video. A watermark-free file is also not copyright-free: you receive permission to use copyrighted footage under iStock’s license, not ownership of the underlying video.
Preview versus licensed iStock video
When you click a preview or save a comp from an iStock video page, you are obtaining an evaluation copy. iStock describes these files as watermarked comps that can help you test framing, timing, editing, color, or placement in a draft. Its Content License Agreement limits watermarked content to test or sample-layout purposes, prohibits it from final or publicly available materials, and limits that use to the 30 days after download.
| File or stage | What it is for | What you may not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Preview or comp | Testing a shot, checking timing, building a private sample layout, or getting client approval. | It is not a licensed substitute for the production file and should not appear in a published video. |
| Licensed download | The file obtained through an authorized credit purchase, eligible subscription download, or official free-file offer. | You do not own the underlying footage, and the download is still subject to iStock’s license restrictions. |
| Edited file | A licensed clip that has been trimmed, color-corrected, resized, stabilized, or incorporated into a larger production. | Editing the footage does not remove the license terms or make raw redistribution acceptable. |
iStock’s video page also explains that a free watermarked comp must be replaced with a paid licensed file before final use. In practice, the licensed download is the clean production deliverable in iStock’s preview-versus-license workflow. If a file obtained through the authorized download process still shows an iStock watermark, treat that as a wrong-file or technical problem and follow the recovery steps below rather than trying to erase the mark.

Three legitimate ways to get the clean file
1. Buy one clip with credits or a single-file purchase
This is usually the simplest choice when you need one specific clip or download only occasionally. iStock offers video licensing through credits and individual purchases; the available price and resolution options appear on the asset page and can vary by video.
- Sign in to the correct iStock account.
- Search for the footage and set the file type to Video.
- Open the video’s detailed information page rather than relying on the preview player.
- Choose the available video resolution or size.
- Select Download this video clip.
- If iStock presents purchase choices, select the single-file purchase or apply available credits.
- Complete checkout if payment is required.
- Return to the video’s detailed page after checkout and select Download this video clip again.
- Select Confirm download, then save the file to your computer or approved storage.
The extra return-to-the-asset step matters. Completing payment does not necessarily save the file automatically; iStock’s purchasing FAQ directs buyers back to the asset to start the authorized download. Keep the receipt, asset or file number, and download-history record with the project.
2. Download through an eligible subscription
First confirm that the plan includes video and the relevant library. iStock says Premium + Video includes videos, while Basic and Premium plans have narrower content access. Plan names, availability, download allowances, pricing, rollover provisions, and regional offers can change, so check the live Premium + Video pricing page before subscribing.
- Sign in to the account that owns the active subscription.
- Open the video’s detailed page.
- Choose the desired resolution or size.
- Click Download this video clip.
- If iStock asks how to pay, choose the subscription or credits, depending on which entitlement covers the clip.
- Click Confirm download and save the resulting file.
If the video is not included in the plan, iStock says you can buy it with credits or contact iStock about upgrading. Do not assume that having a subscription makes every iStock video downloadable at no additional cost.
Subscription downloads can generally be downloaded again without an additional charge while the subscription is active. After cancellation or expiration, the rights to properly downloaded files do not automatically end under iStock’s stated terms, but access to subscription download history and subscription re-downloads may no longer be available. Archive the licensed file, receipt, and download record before the subscription ends.
Subscription accounts are also generally intended for one user. A team or agency should use an arrangement that permits the required users rather than sharing one personal login or passing raw files to people who are not covered.
3. Claim an officially offered free iStock video
iStock does periodically offer selected licensed video clips at no charge through its official free stock video program. The current free-video page says users can sign in or join for free to download complimentary clips from the Signature library, with the same license benefits as paid downloads subject to the content license.
The number of available free clips is not stable across iStock’s own pages: the current free-video page uses wording about three exclusive video clips every month, while the purchasing FAQ says iStock selects one video clip every month. Older iStock material also uses different wording. The safe conclusion is that iStock periodically offers selected free licensed videos, but the number and selection can change. Check the live official free-video page at the time you download.
This offer does not mean that any arbitrary iStock video can be downloaded for free. A normal watermarked preview is not an officially free licensed asset.
Which resolution and format should you download?
The options depend on the particular asset. iStock documents video deliveries that can include the following:
| Option | Typical specification | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| 4K DCI | 4096 × 2160; often supplied as a QuickTime MOV. | Professional editing, cinema-oriented work, large displays, reframing, or heavy stabilization. |
| 4K UHD | 3840 × 2160. | High-resolution commercial, television, web, and future-proof projects where cropping latitude matters. |
| Full HD | 1920 × 1080. | Most ordinary web videos, social posts, presentations, and many client projects. |
| HD | 1280 × 720. | Projects delivered at 720p or workflows where storage and bandwidth are limited. |
| HD Web | 640 × 360 MP4. | Small files, quick internal reviews, or low-bandwidth publishing where editing latitude is unimportant. |
Depending on the clip, the file may be MOV or MP4 and may use H.264, ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 4444, or Photo JPEG. Frame rate, aspect ratio, alpha-channel availability, and codec are asset-dependent; inspect the technical details on the video page before purchasing.

iStock says the largest available size is the original contributor-supplied version and is generally the best source for professional editing. That does not mean the largest file is always necessary. Use 4K when you expect to crop, stabilize, reframe, or deliver to a high-resolution display. Full HD is normally adequate for standard online work. Choose HD Web only when a small file is more valuable than image quality and post-production flexibility.
If the downloaded video still has a watermark
A watermark on a file you believe you purchased is a download or account-selection issue—not an invitation to use a watermark-removal tool. Work through this checklist:
- Identify the file. Open the saved video and determine whether it is the Preview or comp. Preview files are often saved separately from the licensed deliverable and may have a confusingly similar filename.
- Return to the detailed asset page. Sign in, open the same video, choose the desired resolution, and use Download this video clip. Do not save from the preview player or use a browser’s right-click save command on the preview.
- Check the account. Confirm that you are signed in to the account that made the purchase or owns the subscription. A different account may show the preview but not the entitlement.
- Check the payment source. If the account has both credits and a subscription, confirm whether iStock used the subscription or credits and whether the plan actually covers the asset.
- Use download history. Credit purchases should be available for authorized re-download through download history. Subscription re-downloads are generally available during the active subscription period.
- Match the file number. Compare the number on the receipt or download record with the number for the video you opened.
- Contact iStock if the authorized file is defective. If the licensed file is corrupt, incomplete, blurry, or otherwise technically unusable, contact iStock with the file number and purchase information. iStock says technical problems may qualify for re-crediting at its discretion.
If iStock’s download control appears to do nothing, check the browser’s download list and its default Downloads folder, desktop, or other configured save location. A browser may have blocked or interrupted the transfer. Allow the site’s download to proceed, try again from download history, and sign out and back in if the account is displaying the wrong plan. If the authorized download still fails, contact iStock support instead of obtaining the file from an unofficial source.
Not every visible mark is an iStock preview watermark
A licensed file can still contain a mark that was part of the original footage, such as a contributor-embedded logo, a production watermark, a brand sign captured in the scene, or another copyright notice. A license does not promise to remove marks that are actually in the source video. If the mark is not iStock’s preview overlay, contact iStock or select another asset rather than assuming the clean download is defective.
Watermark-free does not mean copyright-free
iStock footage remains copyrighted content. Royalty-free means that, after obtaining the appropriate license, you generally do not pay an ongoing royalty for each use; it does not mean public-domain footage or unrestricted ownership. iStock says its video files can be used in advertising, websites, and video productions subject to the license. You receive permission to use the footage under those terms—you do not buy the underlying copyright.
The standard license is generally worldwide, perpetual, non-exclusive, and usable in unlimited projects, subject to its restrictions. Read the current Content License Agreement for the particular use, because a watermark-free file can still be used incorrectly.

License checklist before publishing
- Confirm the use category. Ordinary use in a completed video, website, advertisement, presentation, or social-media production will often fit a standard license, provided the footage and distribution do not fall within a restricted category.
- Check for editorial-only labeling. Editorial footage may suit news reporting, documentaries, educational discussion, or other descriptive editorial contexts. It should not be used for ordinary advertising, product promotion, endorsements, or commercial campaigns.
- Do not redistribute the raw clip. Incorporate the footage into a finished production rather than offering the standalone video for download, resale, or reuse.
- Do not use it as a logo or trademark. Stock footage cannot normally be used as a trademark, logo, or distinguishing brand element without the appropriate custom permission.
- Check physical distribution limits. The standard license limits physical print runs to 500,000. A larger run may require an extended license.
- Check resale and template uses. Products for resale, electronic templates, build-your-own media products, and similar uses may require an extended license.
- Check user access. If more than one person needs access to the raw licensed content, use a permitted team or multi-user arrangement. Do not casually share a personal account or raw asset with an unauthorized editor, client, or agency.
- Do not use the footage for AI training. iStock’s license restricts using content for machine-learning or AI training unless iStock expressly authorizes it. Ordinary editing of a licensed clip into a video is a different question from ingesting the footage into a training dataset, but the project should be reviewed carefully.
- Preserve required credit. Include the video credit where technically feasible and use the form required by iStock’s license.
Whether an extended license is needed depends on the asset, the project, distribution method, print quantity, resale structure, and number of users. Do not interpret a standard license as permission for every possible use.

A downloader, URL extractor, screen recording, or watermark-removal tool can produce a file, but it cannot produce a license. iStock’s Terms of Use prohibit downloading or copying content without a written license or in violation of one, and also prohibit data-mining and similar extraction methods.

For U.S. users, 17 U.S.C. § 1202 addresses unauthorized removal or alteration of copyright-management information when its statutory knowledge and infringement-related intent requirements are met. Whether a particular visual watermark qualifies and whether the elements apply are fact-specific legal questions; it is too broad to say that every watermark-removal act automatically violates § 1202. The practical answer is simpler: do not turn a preview into a supposed licensed file. License the original through iStock.
Credits or subscription: which is better?
| Your situation | Usually the better starting point | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One video or occasional downloads | Single-file purchase or credits | Higher effective cost per clip, but no recurring subscription commitment. |
| Several videos in one month | An eligible video subscription | Potentially lower effective cost, but recurring billing, plan restrictions, and download limits apply. |
| You need a specific Signature clip unavailable to Basic | Credits or Premium + Video | Credits may solve one immediate need; the broader plan costs more but may cover a larger workflow. |
| You need one clip immediately | Credits or single-file checkout | Avoids subscribing solely for one asset. |
| You need many mixed assets | Premium + Video, if its live terms fit the project | Check the current allowance and library access. A plan is not automatically a license to every video. |
| A team or agency needs raw-file access | A permitted team or multi-user arrangement | Do not share one personal subscription account or raw files outside the users covered by the license. |
iStock’s current pricing information has shown Premium + Video plans with 10, 25, or 50 monthly downloads and, in qualifying cases, rollover allowances up to 250 downloads. Promotional pricing, plan structure, country availability, and rollover terms are volatile, so verify the live pricing page rather than relying on a permanent quoted price or allowance.
Special cases for freelancers, clients, and editors
A client sends you a watermarked file
Do not assume the client owns a usable license merely because they supplied a preview. Ask for the iStock file number, purchaser or account holder, receipt, licensed unwatermarked download, and confirmation that the intended use is covered. If the client only has the comp, the client needs to license the video before you publish it.
You are downloading for an employer or client
Purchase through the account and workflow appropriate for the employer or client. iStock’s license allows employer or client use in specified circumstances when the purchaser has authority to bind that employer or client, but a freelancer should not casually use a personal entitlement for unrelated clients or share raw downloads without checking the license.
The subscription has ended
A properly licensed file can generally remain usable under the license after cancellation, but the ability to re-download subscription files may disappear once the active subscription period ends. Save the original file and proof of license while the account is active. If a file is missing from history, withdrawn, or no longer available, contact iStock with the file number.
A safe publishing workflow
- Use the comp only to evaluate the shot and obtain approval.
- Before editing the final master, purchase or claim the clip through iStock’s official workflow.
- Download the selected resolution from the detailed asset page, not from the preview player.
- Save the original licensed file in an archived project folder.
- Store the receipt, file number, account information, and download-history record alongside the project.
- Check whether the clip is editorial-only and whether your distribution, client, team, resale, print, template, or AI use creates a special restriction.
- Edit the licensed clip into the finished production and do not distribute the raw footage separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an iStock watermarked preview in a private YouTube draft?
A private draft may be a test or sample layout, but iStock limits watermarked content to testing or sample-layout use for 30 days after download. Do not publish it, make it publicly available, or leave it in the final project; replace it with the licensed download first.
Is an officially free iStock video licensed?
Yes, when it is downloaded through iStock’s official free-video program. iStock says those complimentary downloads receive the same license benefits as paid downloads, subject to the Content License Agreement. The number and selection of free clips can change, so check the current official free-video page.
Can I keep using a video after canceling my iStock subscription?
Properly licensed downloads generally remain usable under the applicable license after cancellation, but subscription download history and re-download access may no longer be available after the subscription ends. Archive the file and proof of license before cancellation or expiration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I send the downloaded video to my editor?
Only if the sharing and user arrangement is permitted by the applicable iStock license. Standard subscriptions are generally limited to one user. Use an appropriate team or multi-user arrangement when multiple people need access to raw licensed content, and do not share a personal account casually.
What if my subscription does not include the video I want?
Use credits or a single-file purchase, or ask iStock about upgrading. An active subscription does not necessarily cover every video or library.
Can I crop, trim, resize, or color-correct a licensed iStock video?
Those are ordinary forms of editing and incorporation into a finished production, but the license still applies. Editing does not permit raw-file redistribution, prohibited branding use, editorial footage in an advertising campaign, or any other restricted use.
Why does my supposedly paid download still have an iStock watermark?
You may have saved the Preview or comp, used the wrong account, selected an uncovered subscription instead of credits, or received an incomplete file. Reopen the asset while signed in, use Download this video clip and Confirm download, check download history and the file number, and contact iStock if the authorized file remains defective.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo I need an extended license?
Often not for an ordinary completed video, website, advertisement, presentation, or social production, provided the clip is not editorial-only and the use fits the standard license. Check for an extended license when making products for resale, electronic templates, build-your-own media products, large physical print runs, or when more users need raw-file access.
What if the clip is marked editorial-only?
Use it only in appropriate editorial or descriptive contexts such as news reporting, documentaries, or educational discussion. Do not use editorial-only footage for ordinary advertising, product promotion, endorsements, or commercial campaigns.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Download the clean iStock file only through the asset’s authorized purchase, subscription, or official free-download workflow. A preview watermark cannot be legitimately bypassed into a free license. If a paid download still shows a mark, verify the account, payment source, download history, file number, and technical integrity, then contact iStock support.
