To draw a cartoon butterfly, start with a small head and narrow body on a centerline, then add a larger upper wing and a smaller lower wing on each side. Finish with antennae, optional facial features, and wing patterns. A pencil, eraser, and paper are enough; the shapes and colors are yours to choose.

Gather a few basic supplies

Use paper, a pencil, and an eraser for a sketch. Colored pencils, crayons, or watercolor paint are optional for coloring. If you prefer a firm guide while sketching, a ruler can help you place a light centerline, but freehand drawing works too.

Draw a cartoon butterfly step by step

  1. Mark the center and body

Lightly draw a vertical guideline. Place a round or oval head near the top, then sketch a narrow body beneath it. For a more insect-like shape, distinguish a small thorax below the head from a longer abdomen.

  2. Build the wings from simple shapes

On each side of the body, draw a large upper wing and a smaller lower wing. Rounded drops, hearts, or loose curved outlines all work. Keep the two sides broadly similar if you want a balanced butterfly, but they do not need to match exactly.

  3. Add antennae and choose an expression

Draw two curved or straight antennae rising from the head. Add eyes or a smile if you want an expressive, character-like butterfly. For a simpler insect-inspired cartoon, leave the face plain or omit human-like features.

  4. Decorate the wings

Add a few spots, lines, loops, or other patterns to each wing. Repeating the main marks on both sides helps the design feel balanced; changing their size or arrangement gives it a looser, more playful look.

  5. Refine and color

Once the outline looks right, erase the centerline and any extra construction marks. Trace the final contours with a darker pencil or pen if desired, then color the wings and body. There is no required palette or medium.

Choose a style that suits your drawing

Approach What to draw Useful when
Simple shapes Drop- or heart-like wings with a basic body You want a quick, approachable drawing for a child or beginner
More detailed outline Curved wing contours, with upper wings larger than lower wings You want a more structured butterfly silhouette
Expressive character A face, smile, or other personality details You want the butterfly to read as a character
Insect-inspired cartoon A simple head, body, antennae, and paired wings without a human-like expression You prefer a less anthropomorphic design

These are different drawing choices, not steps toward one correct style. Tutorials from DrawingForAll, Kids Activities Blog, We Are Teachers, and Easy Drawing Guides illustrate variations, from simple wing shapes to more developed outlines and classroom-friendly steps.

Fix common drawing snags

  • The wings look uneven: Check their size and placement against the centerline, then adjust the broad outline. Small differences can still look lively.
  • The wings look stiff: Round the corners or vary the curves instead of making every edge straight.
  • The pattern feels crowded: Erase a few marks and leave some open space inside each wing.
  • The face changes the style too much: Simplify or remove it; antennae, body, and wings are enough to make a cartoon butterfly recognizable.
