To draw a fish fin that looks attached and believable, start from a reference: mark where the fin joins the body, sketch its outer shape, then add the supporting rays or spines. Fin placement and silhouette vary by species, so treat this as a drawing method—not a single outline that fits every fish.
Choose the fish and fin you want to draw
Pick a species or reference image before sketching. Compare the fin’s position, contour, attachment point and internal structure rather than borrowing a shape from an unrelated fish. The Australian Museum’s Redfin Perch feature labels the fins on that species; the University of Hawaiʻi’s educational resource shows a different dorsal-fin example. These references illustrate why one fish’s proportions should not be treated as universal.

Draw the fin in five steps
- Mark the body and attachment point. Lightly sketch the relevant body contour, then indicate where the fin meets it. This anchor helps the fin read as part of the fish rather than a separate shape beside it.
- Block in the outer contour. Use a light line to sketch the fin’s overall silhouette, following your chosen reference for its length, curve and position. Keep the outline simple at first.
- Add the supports. Once the silhouette feels right, draw the internal rays or spines from the fin’s base toward its edge. The Florida Museum’s fish anatomy guide explains fin spines, rays and caudal fins. In its example, the University of Hawaiʻi’s Exploring Our Fluid Earth distinguishes an unbranched spine from softer, branched rays; use the terms and shapes that match the fish you chose.
- Check the connection. Look at the fin’s base against the body contour. Adjust the join so the outline appears to emerge from the body, not float beside it.
- Refine and shade. Clarify the rays, clean up the outline and add shading to suggest form. A Smithsonian Ocean drawing demonstration shows pencil drawing and shading; it does not establish a particular pencil grade or brand as necessary.
Use fin structure without copying the wrong pattern
Rays and spines give many drawn fins useful internal structure, but their pattern and number depend on the fish and the fin. For example, the University of Hawaiʻi resource describes an illustrated common carp dorsal fin with 1 spine and 15–22 soft rays. That count belongs to that example only; it is not a general fish-fin formula.
When a reference is unavailable, keep the structure simple rather than assigning a precise count or anatomy to an unidentified species. If you want a stylized result, exaggerate a curve or length deliberately after establishing the reference-based shape and attachment.

Materials
A standard drawing pencil is enough for a light construction sketch and basic shading. The Smithsonian demonstration supports pencil use, but does not identify a required grade or brand. For anatomical accuracy, a clear image or species-specific anatomy reference matters more than specialized drawing equipment.
