To draw a fountain, start with its overall silhouette and basin, then place the centerline and main tiers before adding water, details, and shading. Work lightly at first: getting the proportions and perspective right matters more than drawing every ornament.
Choose materials and set the frame
Begin with drawing paper and a pencil so you can adjust the construction lines. A graphite pencil is a practical starting choice; ink or watercolor can be added for a more finished study, but neither is required. Historical fountain designs show a range of media: Jean-Baptiste Louis Plantar’s mid-19th-century design at The Met combines graphite, pen and ink, and watercolor, while a Rijksmuseum garden-fountain design by Daniël Marot (II), dated 1705–1769, is cataloged with paper, ink, pencil, pen, and brush. The Met’s Plantar record and the Rijksmuseum record document those choices; they are examples, not required materials.

Choose portrait orientation for a tall fountain or landscape orientation for a broad basin and surrounding space. Leave enough room around the fountain for any spray, falling water, or a small strip of ground.
Block in the fountain’s largest shapes
- Mark the overall height and width. Use very light strokes to reserve the fountain’s full silhouette within the page.
- Draw the basin. Sketch its top as a shallow ellipse, then add the front rim and the lower bowl or supporting base. Keep the ellipse narrow if you are looking down only slightly; make it broader when more of the basin’s interior is visible.
- Add a vertical centerline. Align the fountain’s central pedestal, column, or stacked tiers to this guide. The centerline helps keep the structure balanced, even if the ornament is asymmetrical.
- Place the major masses. Indicate the central body and any upper bowls, figures, or architectural forms as simple blocks. Check their widths against the basin before drawing smaller details.
- Connect the silhouette. Lightly join the main shapes so you can judge the fountain as one form. Correct the height, spacing, or width now rather than trying to hide proportion problems with detail.
Check perspective and structure
Compare the basin’s visible ellipse with the vertical structure above it. Its center should sit beneath the fountain’s central mass, and its rim should remain consistent in perspective. If the fountain is ornate, simplify it into a few clear shapes—basin, support, upper tier, and top ornament—before refining its decoration.

Fountain drawings can be studies of a visible object or designs that explain how a structure is built. For instance, The Met catalogs an anonymous 16th-century fountain drawing made with pen and brown ink, brown wash, and faint black chalk; the Smithsonian describes a project drawing as an elevation, with water pouring from arched openings. Draw the water with directional marks
Use the fountain’s structure to decide where the water begins and where it lands. For jets, draw a few strokes that arc outward from the outlets. For falling water, use broken vertical or slightly curved lines that follow the stream’s direction. Short, uneven marks can suggest ripples in the basin.

- Leave gaps so water does not become a solid outline.
- Vary line length and spacing to suggest movement.
- Keep the strongest marks near the outlet or the point where water meets the basin.
- Avoid giving every ripple the same weight; quieter marks help the main fountain remain the focus.
Clarify form with line weight and shading
Once the proportions read clearly, strengthen selected contours. Use darker lines where forms overlap or where a rim turns away from the light; keep distant or less important edges lighter. Add restrained shading beneath basin rims, inside the bowl, and under projecting tiers to show depth. If you want a more finished drawing, add ink or a light wash only after the pencil structure is settled.

A narrow patch of pavement, a few plants, or a simple architectural edge can anchor the fountain in a place. Keep the surroundings quieter and less detailed than the fountain so they support its scale without taking attention from the main subject.
