To draw a microwave, start with a wide rectangular body, then add the door window, handle and control panel. Light pencil guides make it easy to adjust their placement before you refine the outline and shade the appliance.
What you need
Gather paper, a pencil, an eraser and a ruler. Coloring supplies are optional if you want to finish the drawing in color. A basic sketch does not require specialized tools.

How to draw a microwave step by step

Sketch the body
Use light pencil strokes to draw a wide horizontal rectangle. Keep it wider than it is tall; this is the microwave’s front. A ruler can help you get straight edges, but a freehand outline works too.

Place the door window
Draw a smaller rectangle inside the body, leaving a clear margin around it. Keep the window large enough to read as the main door feature without crowding the edges.

Choose a handle and control-panel layout
Decide where the handle and controls will go before adding details. For one simple arrangement, put a slim vertical handle beside the window and reserve a narrow strip on the other side for the control panel. Other microwave designs place these features differently, so treat this as a drawing option rather than a fixed layout.

Add the display and buttons
Draw a small display near the top of the control panel, then add a few square or rectangular buttons below it. Keep the buttons similar in size and leave even gaps between them. A handful of clear shapes is enough to suggest the controls.

Give the microwave a base or depth
Add small feet beneath the body if you want it to look grounded. For a simple three-dimensional effect, extend a short line from one top corner and draw a narrow top or side plane. Leave this out for an easier, straight-on view.

Refine and shade
Darken the final outline and erase construction marks that are no longer needed. Shade the window more darkly than the body, and add a small light highlight to suggest reflected light. A few gray tones can hint at metal surfaces; choose any body color you like if you are using coloring supplies.

Front view or slight perspective?

Neither view is inherently more accurate for a simple illustration. Pick the one that suits the look you want.

The body, door or window, handle and control panel do most of the work. Keep the display and button arrangement simple: real control panels differ, and copying a particular button count is not necessary. Tutorials from EasyDrawingArt and How to Draw for Kids likewise build the drawing from the appliance outline and its front details.

If you want to suggest what is inside, add a small oval turntable behind the window. It is an internal microwave component, but parts vary by model, as Whirlpool’s component overview explains. For a beginner sketch, the darker window and a highlight are usually enough.
For a closer, more realistic window, GE Appliances describes a mesh screen and plastic shield within the door window; the mesh permits viewing while reflecting microwave energy. See GE Appliances’ door-design explanation. You can simply suggest this detail with a faint mesh pattern, or omit it for a cleaner drawing.
