To draw in Illustrator, choose a tool that matches the geometry: use the Line Segment tool for one straight path, Arc for a curved path, Spiral for a spiral, Rectangular Grid for rows and columns, or Polar Grid for rings and spokes. You can drag to create a shape directly or, where supported, open the tool’s options to enter dimensions and divider settings. Then style the resulting path or grid with the appearance controls you need.
How do I draw a straight line in Illustrator?
Use the Line Segment tool when you need one straight path, such as a divider or a single stroke. Adobe documents the shortcut as the backslash key (). If you do not see the tool in the toolbar, press and hold a tool icon to reveal hidden tools, or choose Edit Toolbar to see the full list. Toolbar layout and labels can vary by Illustrator version; Adobe’s tool overview describes the toolbar and hidden tools.
- Select the Line Segment tool.
- Drag on the artboard. The start and end of the drag set the path’s endpoints, and the drag direction sets its direction.
- With the path selected, adjust its stroke and other appearance properties using the controls available in your workspace.
For a measured line, Adobe’s newer desktop instructions describe clicking a start point and entering a length and angle in the Line Segment Tool Options dialog, then confirming. That interface also documents a Fill Line checkbox. If you need precise values, use the controls shown in your installed version rather than assuming every version presents the same dialog or labels; see Adobe’s desktop guide to drawing lines.

A Line Segment creates a single straight path, not a connected custom outline. For connected, deliberately shaped paths, use the Pen tool; for freehand drawing, use the Pencil tool.
How do I draw a curved line with the Arc tool?
Choose the Arc tool for an individual curved path. You can drag on the artboard to draw, or click to open the Arc Segment Tools Options dialog. Adobe’s documented options include the arc’s X- and Y-axis lengths, whether the path is open or closed, whether its base follows the X or Y axis, slope, and fill.

Set the arc’s shape in the options dialog
- Axis lengths: Set the arc’s width and height.
- Open or closed: Choose whether the result is an open path or a closed shape.
- Base direction: Choose the X or Y axis for the base.
- Slope: Set the curve’s direction and amount. In Adobe’s documented interface, a slope of zero produces a straight line; positive and negative values produce opposite convex or concave directions.
- Fill: Choose whether the arc is filled.

How do I make a spiral?
Use the Spiral tool for a spiral path. Drag on the artboard to create one, or click to open the tool’s dialog and set its parameters. Adobe documents four controls:

After creating the path, adjust its appearance as needed. The Spiral tool guide lists these dialog controls but does not prescribe one setting for a particular visual result; choose values for the spiral you intend to draw. See Adobe’s Spiral tool instructions.
How do I create a rectangular grid?
Use the Rectangular Grid tool when your drawing needs rows and columns. Drag on the artboard to create a grid, or click to open its options. The options Adobe documents let you configure the overall width and height, horizontal and vertical divider counts, divider skew, whether the outside rectangle is a separate frame, and Fill Grid.

- Width and height: Set the grid’s overall dimensions.
- Horizontal and vertical dividers: Set how the rectangle is divided into rows and columns.
- Skew: Weight dividers toward one side rather than distributing them evenly.
- Separate outside rectangle: Make the outer frame a separate element.
- Fill Grid: Set the grid’s fill behavior.

Use the Polar Grid tool for circular layouts divided into rings and spokes, such as a radial diagram. Drag to create the grid, or click to set a reference point and open its options. Adobe documents controls for overall size, concentric divider count and skew, radial divider count and skew, Create Compound Path From Ellipses, and Fill Grid.

- Concentric dividers: Set the number and distribution of the rings.
- Radial dividers: Set the number and distribution of the divisions radiating outward.
- Skew: Shift divider distribution toward one side for the concentric or radial dividers.
- Create Compound Path From Ellipses: Choose whether the ellipses are formed as a compound path.
- Fill Grid: Set the grid’s fill behavior.
The tool creates grid geometry; you still need to style and adapt it for a finished diagram. See Adobe’s grid tool guide for its listed options.
Which Illustrator line or grid tool should I choose?

The key distinction between the grid tools is their geometry: Rectangular Grid divides a rectangle into rows and columns, while Polar Grid combines concentric and radial divisions. Both offer divider configuration and skew; their construction options differ, with a separate outside frame for the rectangular grid and a compound-path option for ellipses in the polar grid.
Where are the line and grid tools in Illustrator?
Illustrator’s toolbar can hide tools that are not currently shown. Adobe says to press and hold a tool icon to reveal hidden tools, or use Edit Toolbar to view the complete list. The overview groups these among drawing tools, while the Line Segment shortcut is backslash. Exact toolbar appearance and option labels can vary across versions; Adobe’s tool overview and desktop line instructions reflect different update dates and interfaces, so follow the controls shown in your installation.
