Use the built-in Markup tool in Photos to draw on a picture on your iPhone 15. Open Photos, select the image, tap Edit, then Markup. Choose a pen, marker, or pencil and draw with your finger—no separate app or Apple Pencil is needed for basic annotations.

Draw on a photo in the Photos app
- Open Photos and tap the picture you want to annotate.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap the Markup button. Depending on your iOS version, the control may instead appear as Add Annotations or as a pen-shaped icon.
- Choose a drawing tool: pen, marker or highlighter, or pencil.
- Choose a color, then draw on the picture with your finger.
- To change a tool’s line thickness or opacity, tap the selected tool again and choose its options.
- Tap Done to finish in Markup, then tap Done again to finish the photo edit.
Markup is designed for practical annotations such as circles, arrows, highlights, handwritten notes, and labels. It is not a layer-based illustration app. Apple’s documented Photos workflow is Photos, select a photo, Edit, then Markup; icons and labels can vary with iOS version.
Choose a tool, color, and line weight
- Pen: Use it for solid lines, circles, arrows, and handwriting.
- Marker or highlighter: Use it to emphasize an area with a softer, translucent stroke.
- Pencil: Use it for a lighter, sketch-like line.
Tap a color to change it; use the color picker for more choices. A bright color such as red, yellow, or blue can stand out against a photo. A thinner line suits small details, while a thicker one is easier to see when the image is viewed on another phone. Lower opacity when you want to emphasize an area without covering it. Apple documents the tool, color, thickness, and opacity controls in its iPhone Markup guide.

Fix a misplaced or unwanted mark
- Undo the last action: Tap Undo in the Markup toolbar. Apple also documents shaking the device to reveal a Redo option if you undo something by mistake; treat that as an alternate recovery gesture, not the main correction method.
- Erase part of a drawing: Choose the eraser and rub over the unwanted strokes.
- Move a drawing: Choose the Lasso tool, trace around the mark, then drag the selection to its new position. The lasso selects markup strokes, not objects in the photograph.
If you have already finished editing, reopen the photo’s edit controls and look for the available revert or undo-edit option. Its wording and placement can differ by iOS version. Apple describes undo, erasing, lasso, and the shake-to-redo option in its Markup instructions.
Draw a clean arrow, circle, or other shape
For a tidier shape than a freehand sketch, draw a line, arrow, circle, rectangle, or other supported shape in one continuous stroke. Pause briefly at the end before lifting your finger; Markup may recognize the outline and replace it with a neater version. If you prefer your original sketch, tap Undo.

Shape recognition can work with lines, arrows, arcs, squares, circles, rectangles, triangles, stars, hearts, clouds, and other shapes. It is not a guarantee that every attempt will be corrected. Apple explains the gesture and supported shapes in its iPhone guide to drawing shapes.
Add a typed label, sticker, signature, or magnified detail
Type a label
- In Markup, tap the Add button and choose Add Text.
- Tap the text box and type your label—for example, “Tap here,” “Part number,” or “Meeting location.”
- Use the formatting controls to adjust font, size, alignment, style, or color, then drag the box into place.
- Tap outside the box when you are finished.
Markup also supports stickers and signatures. To draw attention to a small detail, add a loupe (magnifier) and resize or reposition it. The available Add options can depend on the app and iOS interface. See Apple’s Markup instructions for text and shapes.

Save the annotated photo and preserve the original
After you tap Done in Markup and again to finish the photo edit, the annotation appears as part of the edited photo in Photos. If you need an untouched copy, duplicate the original in Photos before annotating, then work on the duplicate. The exact location and wording of duplicate or revert controls can vary with iOS.
If Markup is missing
- Make sure the picture is open in the Photos app, not only in another app’s preview.
- Tap Edit and look for Markup, Add Annotations, or a pen-shaped icon.
- If the Photos controls are unavailable, try annotating the image in another supported app, such as Messages, before saving or sending it.
- If the interface looks substantially different, update iOS. If the editing controls fail to load, close and reopen Photos.
- Check that you are editing a still image rather than a video; available editing controls can differ.
Apple documents Markup in Photos and Messages. The Photos and screenshot Markup guide covers the feature; the current Photos annotation instructions may use newer interface labels.

Choose another built-in tool only when the job calls for it
- Photos Markup: Best for drawing or labeling directly on an existing photo.
- Notes: Useful when you want to combine a photo with handwriting or other notes. See Apple’s drawing and handwriting in Notes guide.
- Freeform: Better for a larger open canvas or a board of visual ideas. Apple’s Freeform drawing guide describes its drawing tools.
- A dedicated drawing app: Consider one for layers, advanced brushes, masking, compositing, or finished illustrations; those are beyond Markup’s basic annotation role.
For a screenshot, the same Markup system applies: you can open the screenshot in Photos and follow the steps above. You can also tap a screenshot thumbnail immediately after taking it to enter its editing controls; the exact flow depends on the iOS version.
