To make speckled Easter eggs, tint uncooked rice in a sealable sandwich bag, add a hard-boiled egg, and gently shake. The colored grains transfer small marks to the shell, creating a naturally mottled finish without a specialized decorating kit.
What you’ll need
- Hard-boiled eggs with firm whites and yolks
- Uncooked white rice
- Food coloring
- Sealable sandwich bags
- A drying rack or clean rack set over a tray
- Optional: a very small amount of vinegar
Use food-safe coloring and materials if you plan to eat the eggs. The rice is used as a coloring medium and should not be eaten afterward.
Choose a rice-and-color starting point
There is no single required dye-to-rice ratio. Start with one of these published combinations, then adjust for the shade you want:

| About 1/8–1/4 cup uncooked rice | 10–15 drops | American Egg Board starting point; produces a more strongly tinted rice mixture. |

Drop counts vary with the amount of rice and the desired intensity. More heavily colored rice generally gives bolder speckles; lighter rice produces a softer, pastel look.

How to make rice-speckled eggs
- Boil and cool the eggs. Cook until both the white and yolk are firm, then cool and dry the shells so excess water does not dilute the coloring.
- Tint the rice. Put about 1/4 cup of uncooked rice in a sandwich bag. Add 10–15 drops of food coloring, seal the bag, and shake until the grains are evenly coated. You can substitute the 1/2-cup-and-3–4-drop combination above.
- Keep the mixture mostly dry. Vinegar is optional. If you use it, add only a tiny amount; excess vinegar can make the rice clump and stick to the shell. (American Egg Board)
- Add an egg. Place one hard-boiled egg in the colored rice and reseal the bag, leaving enough room for the egg to move.
- Shake gently. Slowly roll or shake the bag so the egg travels through the grains. Check the shell periodically and stop when the speckles look right. Vigorous handling is unnecessary. (Children’s Museum of Richmond)
- Dry the egg. Lift it out and set it on a rack for about 20–60 minutes, the drying range given by the American Egg Board. Let the surface become easy to handle before adding another color. (American Egg Board)
Layer colors for multicolored speckles
Use a fresh bag of rice for each color. After the first pass has set enough to handle, place the egg in the next bag and roll it gently again. Shorter contact gives scattered accents; longer contact builds more coverage. Keep each bag’s rice as dry as possible so the grains remain separate.
Adjust the look
For pastel eggs
Use fewer drops of coloring or a larger amount of rice, then shake briefly. The Morton Arboretum activity identifies dye quantity as the control for lighter or bolder results. (Morton Arboretum activity sheet)

For stronger speckles
Tint the rice more deeply and make several gentle passes rather than pressing or rubbing the shell. A second color can add contrast without covering the first pattern.
For fewer clumps
- Use dry, uncooked rice and only minimal liquid.
- Seal the bag before shaking so coloring stays contained.
- If grains begin sticking together, add fresh dry rice rather than more vinegar or water.
Food-safety practices for edible eggs
Keep cooked eggs refrigerated except while decorating or serving. An Associated Press report dated April 3, 2026, citing food-safety experts, gives a general limit of two hours at room temperature, reduced to one hour in particularly warm conditions; it says hard-boiled eggs are generally good for about one week when refrigerated. Use plastic eggs instead if the eggs will sit outdoors for an Easter hunt. Clemson University extension specialist Kimberly Baker told the Associated Press: “If it’s an outdoor Easter egg hunt at any time, I would say go with the plastic eggs and be safe.”

The rice sticks to the shell
The mixture is probably too wet, often from too much vinegar. Discard clumped rice, make a fresh dry batch, and use little or no vinegar.

The color barely shows
Increase the coloring gradually or let the egg make another pass through the tinted rice. The shell must be dry before decorating.

The shell is covered instead of speckled
Use less-colored rice, shorten the shaking time, and roll the egg gently so fewer grains contact each area.
