How to Emboss Text in Microsoft Word

Use WordArt in desktop Word and apply a restrained Bevel effect, where available, to make text look embossed. The old Font-dialog Emboss checkbox is legacy and is not a dependable modern DOCX feature.

To make text look embossed in desktop Microsoft Word, create WordArt and use its text effects, including Bevel where available, then adjust the fill and outline. Word does not have a dependable modern command literally named “Emboss”; the old Font-dialog Emboss checkbox is legacy guidance and can depend on version and file format.

How to make text look embossed with WordArt

  1. In desktop Word, choose Insert > WordArt, select a style, and type your heading. You can also select existing text and convert it using Insert > WordArt.
  2. Select the WordArt object so its formatting tab appears. Depending on the version and interface, this may be called Shape Format or Drawing Tools Format.
  3. Open Text Effects. If Bevel is offered, choose a restrained setting to suggest raised edges.
  4. Use Text Fill and Text Outline to give the letters enough contrast for the effect to show. A heavier or larger typeface can help if the detail is hard to see.
  5. Click outside the object to inspect the result, and adjust the style and text formatting as needed.

Bevel is a way to create an embossed-looking effect, not a current universal Emboss command. The exact controls and labels can vary by Word version and platform.

Ordinary text effects versus WordArt

For ordinary selected text, Word’s Home > Font > Text Effects and Typography menu offers effects such as outline, shadow, reflection, and glow. Microsoft does not describe these as the legacy Emboss checkbox. For a more dimensional decorative treatment, WordArt provides text effects that can include Bevel.

Approach What it can do When to use it
Ordinary text effects Apply effects such as outline, shadow, reflection, or glow to selected text For a simpler treatment on text that should remain ordinary document text
WordArt Apply WordArt text effects, including Bevel where available, and adjust fill and outline For a decorative heading that should look raised or dimensional

Where is the Emboss option in Word?

The old Font-dialog Emboss checkbox is not a dependable feature in current Word documents. Historical references describe it as removed in Word 2010 and report that saving as legacy DOC can expose it in some workflows. That is version- and format-dependent legacy behavior, not the recommended route for a modern DOCX document. Use WordArt effects for an embossed-looking heading instead.

WordArt in Word for the web

Word for the web can display WordArt that already exists in a document, but it does not support creating WordArt. Open the document in desktop Word to create the effect, then return to the web version if you only need to view the existing WordArt.

Using WordArt on Mac

Word for Microsoft 365 for Mac is included in the applicability information for Microsoft’s WordArt instructions, but the exact Bevel menu path and labels may differ from Windows. Select the WordArt and inspect its Shape Format or Text Effects controls rather than assuming the ribbon placement is identical.
