Microsoft Designer can remove an unwanted person, object, blemish, sign, or other distraction with its Generative Erase tool. Select the area with Quick select or Brush select, choose Erase object, review the generated replacement, and download the result.

Designer does not restore the original hidden pixels. Instead, its AI analyzes the surrounding image and generates new content to fill the erased area, so difficult backgrounds may require a more careful mask or several attempts.

What Microsoft Designer’s erase tool does

Microsoft calls the feature Generative Erase. It removes a selected region and generates replacement content intended to match the surrounding scene.

This is different from:

  • Background removal: Separates a subject from its background.
  • Cropping: Cuts away part of the image without reconstructing it.
  • Blur or pixelation: Conceals an object rather than removing it.
  • Traditional retouching: Uses cloning, healing, or manual painting for more direct control.

Designer is usually a good fit for quick edits such as removing a passerby from a simple wall, cleaning up a travel photo, or deleting a small distraction. It is less predictable when the selected object overlaps faces, hands, text, detailed architecture, or repeating patterns.

See Microsoft’s current Designer FAQ for the documented feature names and availability details.

How to erase an object in Microsoft Designer online

  1. Open Microsoft Designer and sign in with a personal Microsoft account.
  2. Start an image-editing project, then upload or open the image.
  3. Open the image-editing or AI-editing controls.
  4. Choose Erase, Generative Erase, or Erase object, depending on the current interface.
  5. Choose Quick select and click the unwanted object.
  6. If the selection is incomplete or too broad, switch to Brush select and paint over the missing areas.
  7. Include the complete object, along with any shadow, reflection, thin edge, stray pixel, or connected item that should disappear.
  8. Select Erase object and wait for Designer to generate the replacement.
  9. Inspect the result at full size. Choose Looks good if it is acceptable.
  10. If the fill looks artificial, choose Start over, create a better mask, and run the erase again.
  11. Download or save the finished image.

Microsoft periodically changes Designer’s web layout and labels. The controls above are the documented functions, but their exact position may vary by account, device, region, language, or rollout.

How to remove an object through Windows Photos

Windows users can reach Designer from the Photos app:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Photos app.
  2. Open one image rather than remaining in the gallery view.
  3. Select the Designer icon in the title bar.
  4. Sign in if prompted.
  5. Choose the image-editing or object-selection tools.
  6. Select the unwanted object or area, then choose Erase or the available generative erase option.
  7. Review the result and save or download the edited image.

Microsoft says this Photos integration also provides actions such as Color pop, Focus, Cutout, and Copy. It is an online Designer experience, so an internet connection is required. The Designer icon may not appear unless a single image is open, the account and language are supported, and the user signs in with a supported personal Microsoft account. Microsoft Entra accounts cannot be used for this Photos sign-in flow. See Microsoft’s Photos and Designer instructions.

Quick select versus Brush select

Tool Best for Strengths Limitations
Quick select Clearly separated people, pets, cars, furniture, and large objects Fast and beginner-friendly May miss hair, thin edges, low-contrast areas, or parts hidden by nearby objects
Brush select Small blemishes, wires, text, signs, partial objects, and objects touching the subject Gives you direct control over the mask Requires more careful painting and can include background details accidentally

For the cleanest result, start with Quick select when it works well, then refine with Brush select. A slightly larger mask is usually better than leaving behind an obvious outline, but avoid brushing over unrelated parts of the image.

Tips for cleaner AI erase results

Mask the whole object

Include hands, feet, bags, wheels, accessories, detached fragments, and cast shadows when they should also disappear. Leaving a shadow or partial outline behind can make the edit look less natural.

Use smaller selections

Large selections remove more context that the model can use to reconstruct the scene. When possible, work in smaller areas or erase connected distractions in carefully chosen passes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect important edges

Keep the mask away from the face, product edge, lettering, or main subject that must remain. Quick select can accidentally include nearby areas, especially when colors and textures are similar.

Inspect at 100% zoom

A generated fill can look convincing as a thumbnail but reveal halos, duplicated textures, smearing, or distorted geometry when enlarged. Check walls, pavement, fences, floor tiles, and other repeating patterns closely.

Retry instead of accepting a weak fill

Use Start over and redraw the mask if the replacement invents an odd texture or bends nearby lines. Selection quality is often more important than the erase command itself.

Crop when the object is near an edge

If the unwanted item sits at the edge of the frame, cropping may be more predictable than asking AI to reconstruct a large missing section.

Removing a person from a photo

To remove a person, select them with Quick select, then check the mask carefully. Add their shadow, reflection, bag, or visible accessories with Brush select if those should be removed too.

After choosing Erase object, inspect the background around the person. A person standing in front of a plain wall is easier to reconstruct than someone standing in front of faces, signage, a fence, intricate architecture, or a patterned floor. If you see repeated or distorted patterns, redo the edit with a tighter mask or divide the task into smaller areas.

Can Designer remove text, logos, or watermarks?

Designer can select visible text or other regions as part of an ordinary image-editing task. For example, you might remove your own typo, an outdated label, or an unwanted sign from an image you own.

Do not treat the tool as permission to remove someone else’s watermark, copyright notice, logo, or attribution. That may violate copyright, licensing terms, or a creator’s rights. Generative erasure also changes the image, so it may be unsuitable for an archival, legal, journalistic, forensic, or documentary record.

Review Microsoft’s Designer consumer terms before using edited material in a professional or public context.

Why the Erase tool may be missing

If you cannot find the feature, try these checks:

  1. Open the web version directly at designer.microsoft.com.
  2. In Photos, make sure one image—not just the gallery—is open.
  3. Confirm that the device is connected to the internet.
  4. Sign in with a personal Microsoft account.
  5. Look for Erase, Generative Erase, or Erase object; the label may differ.
  6. Check whether your account, region, language, or current rollout supports the feature.
  7. Consult Microsoft’s current FAQ if the control still does not appear.

Is Microsoft Designer free?

Microsoft describes Designer as free to use with a Microsoft account, while also stating that a subscription may be required for people who want to create more frequently. Microsoft does not publish one universal erase-specific price or guarantee unlimited use in the cited documentation, so check the limits shown in your account.

Privacy, storage, and AI metadata

Designer requires a Microsoft account, and its online editing workflow sends the work through Microsoft’s cloud service. Microsoft says uploaded images are saved to OneDrive and that Designer files are automatically saved to the cloud and count toward the user’s universal Microsoft storage quota.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft also says images created or edited with Designer’s AI features include content credentials or provenance metadata based on the C2PA standard. This metadata is intended to identify AI editing; it is not the same as a visible watermark that will necessarily appear in every viewer.

When another photo editor is a better choice

Designer is a convenient option for quick, ordinary edits, but consider another tool when you need:

  • Pixel-level control over product photography or commercial retouching.
  • Precise cloning, healing, layered editing, or masking.
  • Reliable results on complex repeating textures, faces, hair, or overlapping objects.
  • Offline processing for private or confidential images.
  • A workflow and license designed for professional or commercial production.

Professional desktop editors generally offer more control but require more skill and may cost more. Mobile retouching apps can be convenient, but check their privacy policies, export limits, watermarks, and usage terms. Manual clone or healing tools are slower, yet often more controllable for delicate edges. If the object is close to the image boundary, cropping remains the simplest alternative.

Do not confuse Microsoft Designer with the separate Windows Image Object Erase API. The API is a developer-facing product with packaging, capability, and manifest requirements; it is not a prerequisite for ordinary Designer users.
