To remove an object or irregular area from a photo in current PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, select the picture and choose Picture Format > Edit Picture > Erase. Brush over the unwanted area or draw a box around it, select Erase, review the result, and select Update. This edits the picture on the slide; it is not the same as cropping an edge or placing a shape over the image.

Choose the right tool before you start

“Erase part of a picture” can describe several different jobs. Use the feature that matches the location and the result you need.

You want to… Use this PowerPoint feature
Remove a person, object, or irregular area in the middle of a photo Picture Format > Edit Picture > Erase
Separate a subject from its background Remove Background
Remove a strip from an outside edge Crop
Hide a name, face, number, or other detail quickly Place a shape over it, understanding that this is not secure deletion
Make an area transparent Remove Background or a picture-transparency control, depending on the desired effect
Delete the whole image Select the image and press Delete

Erase a specific object or area

Microsoft’s current Edit Picture workflow is the closest match when you want to remove something from the interior of a photo while retaining the rest of the rectangular image.

  1. Open the presentation in PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 and select the picture.
  2. Right-click the picture and choose Edit Picture, or open Picture Format > Edit Picture.
  3. In the editing window, choose Erase.
  4. Brush over a small or irregular unwanted area, or draw a box around an object that is visually distinct and roughly rectangular.
  5. Select the Erase button to apply the removal.
  6. Inspect the result. Use the back arrow if you need to return to the main Edit Picture menu while retaining the session.
  7. Select Update to place the edited result back on the slide.

Microsoft lists Erase alongside Move, Upscale, Remove background, Auto enhance, and Effects in this tool. The edited image replaces or updates the picture on the slide; it does not become a collection of individually editable pixels or objects. The quality depends on the source image, the area selected, and the PowerPoint build available to your account. Microsoft documents the workflow at Edit pictures in PowerPoint.

Erase changes can be undone with PowerPoint’s Undo command. After you update the picture, PowerPoint may treat the editing session as one combined change, so undo promptly if you need to return to the original.

Remove a background or selected regions

Use Remove Background when the subject should remain and the surrounding background should disappear, or when you need selected areas to become transparent.

  1. Select the image and choose Picture Format > Remove Background.
  2. PowerPoint marks its predicted removal area in magenta.
  3. Choose Mark Areas to Keep and draw over subject details that were selected incorrectly.
  4. Choose Mark Areas to Remove and draw over background material that remains.
  5. Select Keep Changes when the outline is acceptable.

The removed regions become transparent inside the Office document. If the selection is not usable, choose Discard All Changes where available or use Undo. Microsoft’s instructions and examples are in Cut out part of a picture and Remove the background of a picture in Office.

Simple, high-contrast backgrounds generally need less correction. Hair, smoke, reflections, transparent objects, clutter, and very small details can produce jagged edges or accidental removals. For those cases, refine the marks carefully or use a dedicated image editor.

Microsoft says Remove Background may be unavailable for vector formats such as SVG, AI, WMF, and DRW. Ordinary raster photos such as JPG and PNG are the typical inputs for this feature.

Crop away unwanted outer edges

Choose Crop when the unwanted material is on an outside edge. Crop cannot remove a person or object from the middle of a photo while preserving the surrounding pixels.

  1. Select the picture and choose Picture Format > Crop.
  2. Drag a side handle inward to remove one edge, or drag a corner handle to remove two adjacent edges.
  3. Drag the image within the crop area if you need to reposition the subject.
  4. Press Esc or click outside the picture to finish.

Supported Microsoft 365 versions also offer crop-to-shape and aspect-ratio options. See Microsoft’s guide to cropping a picture in Office.

Delete pixels hidden by a crop

Normal cropping is nondestructive: the hidden pixels remain in the presentation and may be recoverable. In desktop PowerPoint, permanently remove those hidden areas with this sequence:

  1. Select the cropped image.
  2. Choose Picture Format > Compress Pictures.
  3. Enable Delete cropped areas of pictures.
  4. Enable Apply only to this picture if other images must remain unchanged.
  5. Choose an appropriate resolution, then select OK.

After the file is saved, deleting cropped areas is effectively permanent; Undo can restore the change only before saving. This option is available in desktop PowerPoint. Microsoft says PowerPoint for the web supports basic cropping but does not provide this desktop deletion control.

Cover an area without editing the picture

For a quick visual cover, such as a colored block over a slide detail, choose Insert > Shapes, draw a rectangle or another shape over the area, and set its fill and outline. You can group the shape with the picture if the pair must move together. Microsoft describes this approach in Cover part of a picture.

A covering shape is not secure redaction. The original information remains underneath and the shape can be moved, deleted, or hidden. For confidential data, permanently edit or replace the image, remove hidden cropped areas where applicable, and inspect the final exported file before sharing.

Make picture content transparent

Remove Background creates transparent regions where PowerPoint removes material. A transparency control instead makes the image, or the supported picture treatment, more see-through; Microsoft’s scale runs from 0% (fully opaque) to 100% (fully transparent). Use transparency when slide text or a background should show through rather than when you need an object genuinely removed.

When transparent areas must survive outside PowerPoint, save the edited image as PNG. JPEG does not preserve transparent backgrounds in the same way.

Windows, Mac, and web differences

  • PowerPoint desktop for Windows and macOS: Provides the fullest set of picture-editing and compression controls documented for Microsoft 365.
  • PowerPoint for the web: Basic cropping is available, but Microsoft identifies desktop apps as required to delete cropped areas from the underlying image.
  • Mobile apps: Do not assume the same Edit Picture, Remove Background, or compression controls. Move the file to desktop or the web version when a command is missing.

Names and placement can vary by operating system, account, build, and feature rollout. If Edit Picture is absent, use the available Remove Background, Crop, or an external editor rather than assuming every installation has the same controls.

Fix common problems

Picture Format does not appear

Confirm that you selected an inserted picture, not a shape, chart, SmartArt object, slide background, or grouped object. Double-clicking the picture can reveal the Picture Format tab. If the image is behind another object, open Home > Select > Selection Pane, identify the picture, and use the eye icons to expose it. Microsoft explains this selection workflow in Delete a picture in PowerPoint.

Remove Background is disabled

Check that the selected object is a normal picture rather than unsupported vector artwork. A picture used as a slide background is not always selectable like an inserted image; edit the background settings or the slide master instead.

The image is grouped or layered

Use the Selection Pane to select the picture within the stack, or ungroup carefully if necessary. Avoid changing the rest of the slide layout unintentionally.

The result has rough edges or removes part of the subject

Return to Remove Background and add precise strokes with Mark Areas to Keep and Mark Areas to Remove. Tiny objects and complex edges may require an external editor and a replacement PNG.

The result looks transparent in PowerPoint but not after export

Check the export format and workflow. Save the edited picture as PNG when transparency needs to be preserved, then verify the exported file independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save the edited picture as a separate file

  1. Right-click the edited image on the slide.
  2. Choose Save as Picture.
  3. Choose PNG when transparent regions must remain transparent, then save the file.

This is useful when you need the cleaned image in another presentation, document, or design application. Microsoft documents saving the result after background removal in Cut out part of a picture.

When PowerPoint is not the best editor

PowerPoint is convenient for presentation-ready cleanup, but a dedicated editor is preferable for pixel-perfect retouching, complex hair or smoke, repeated batch work, advanced masks and layers, or restoration of detailed backgrounds. Export the picture, edit it there, and reinsert the corrected PNG so the slide retains a clean, predictable asset.

The practical rule

  • Use Edit Picture > Erase for a particular object or irregular area.
  • Use Remove Background for a subject cutout or transparent selected regions.
  • Use Crop for unwanted outer edges, then delete cropped areas in desktop PowerPoint if permanent removal is required.
  • Use a shape overlay only for quick visual covering, never as secure deletion of sensitive information.
