You can process a small amount of naturally found clay by slaking it in water, screening out coarse debris, letting the fine material settle, then draining and drying it until workable. First check that the site allows collection and test a small sample: a simple hand test can suggest plasticity, but it cannot tell you how the clay will fire or whether it is safe for food-contact ware.

Before collecting: check the site and test a small sample
Clay-rich earth is not necessarily a uniform ceramic material. “Clay” can mean particles below a size threshold or a family of minerals; a natural sample may also contain fine quartz, carbonates, metal oxides, and other material. Weathering is one major way clays and clay minerals form, and deposits vary. The U.S. Geological Survey’s overview of clays and clay mineral deposits also notes that clays can transport contaminants, so appearance alone does not establish that a deposit is clean.

- Look for exposed clay-rich earth, but check land ownership and local collection rules first. Avoid protected or ecologically sensitive sites.
- Moisten a little clay and roll it into a worm-like shape. Bend it around a finger: if it bends without cracking or separating, it is a promising sign of plasticity. The Museum of Ontario Archaeology describes this as a basic pottery-workability check, not a firing test.
A plastic hand-test result does not identify the minerals, establish a firing range, or prove that a finished piece will be strong or food-safe.

Process a small batch with the wet method
Wet processing is useful when you want to separate coarse inclusions with a screen and allow finer material to settle. Work in a clean container and use a sieve or screen suited to the texture you want: the cited guides support screening, but do not establish one mesh size for every deposit. A finer screen can retain fewer coarse particles but may take longer to work through.
- Break up dry material and slake it. Break the sample into smaller pieces, place it in water, and leave it until it softens. The USAID guide gives 1 to 24 hours depending on how quickly the material breaks down; this is a source-specific range, not a guaranteed schedule for every clay.
- Mix a pourable slurry. Stir the softened material with enough water to make a pourable slip. Break up lumps as much as practical.
- Screen the slip. Pour it through a sieve or screen into a clean container. The screen catches stones, sand, roots, and other coarse inclusions. Rinse the retained material to recover clay still clinging to it. The Museum of Ontario Archaeology’s 2019 natural-clay processing infographic also recommends screening wet clay.
- Let it settle, then decant. Leave the screened slurry until fine material has settled and clearer water sits above it. Carefully pour or siphon off the top water. Settling time depends on the sample and slurry; do not treat a jar’s layers as a mineral identification.
- Drain and dry. Pour the thick slurry through cloth to remove more water. Spread the clay on a suitable drying surface and check it periodically, stopping when it is workable rather than sticky. Drying time varies with the weather, batch size, and water content.
- Temper and wedge if needed. Add temper only if it suits the intended forming and firing behavior, distribute it thoroughly, and wedge the clay to even out moisture and texture. The museum guide describes tempering where needed; it does not prescribe one additive or recipe for all clays.
- Store the prepared clay. Keep it in an airtight bag or container to prevent it drying out.
What settling and hand tests can tell you
A settling container can give a rough picture of relative gravel, sand, silt, and clay-sized fractions. The Utah Geological Survey’s settling-container activity presents this as a particle-size demonstration, not a laboratory analysis. Settling and the plasticity hand test are practical screening tools; neither establishes what minerals are present.

For mineral-specific identification, the USGS describes X-ray diffraction as a method used to identify clay minerals. Testing may be appropriate if knowing the composition matters for a project; visual appearance, smoothness, and plasticity are not substitutes.

Test the clay before relying on it
Do not assume that processed wild clay will work at a particular firing temperature, produce durable ware, or be suitable for food contact. Those properties are not established for an unspecified deposit by cleaning and forming it. Make small test pieces and evaluate them in the kiln and firing setup intended for the project before committing a larger batch. For food-contact or other safety-critical claims, seek qualified testing rather than relying on a hand test or a successful firing alone.
