To find a circle’s center, draw two chords, construct the perpendicular bisector of each, and mark where the bisectors cross. A ruler helps draw the chords and find their midpoints; a set square, drafting triangle, or even a square paper corner helps draw the 90-degree lines.
#1 Best Overall
- Durable Material: Made of high-quality aluminum alloy, this circle center finder tool is anodized for enhanced hardness, wear resistance, and insulation.
- Precision Design: Equipped with imperial graduations, ideal for precise measurements.
- Multi-Functional Use: Can be used for scribing lines, measuring 45/90 degree angles, and locating centers and center lines.
- Compact and Portable: Lightweight and easy to carry, suitable for both professional and home use.
- Wide Applications: Ideal for DIY enthusiasts, engineers, carpenters, and decorators, suitable for a wide range of materials and projects.
What you need
- A straight ruler or straightedge for drawing chords and measuring their midpoints.
- A square edge that makes a right angle, such as a set square or drafting triangle. A paper corner or ruler corner can also serve, as described in the CUNY CareerKit construction handout (2019).
For work at a drafting board, a T-square can guide a set square as you draw the perpendiculars; this arrangement is described in Alloprof’s technical-drawing lesson. These are alternative tool setups, not tested accuracy rankings.
How to construct the center
- Draw a first chord. Choose two points on the circle’s circumference and connect them with a straight line. The segment between those points is a chord.
- Mark its midpoint. Measure the chord and mark halfway along its length.
- Draw the perpendicular bisector. Place one side of your square edge along the chord. Position it so the perpendicular edge crosses the midpoint, then draw a line through that point at 90 degrees to the chord.
- Repeat with a second chord. Choose a different pair of points, preferably so the second chord has a noticeably different orientation. Find its midpoint and draw its perpendicular bisector in the same way.
- Mark the intersection. The point where the two perpendicular bisectors cross is the circle’s center.
Why the lines locate the center
The center is equally far from every point on the circle, including the two endpoints of any chord. A point on a chord’s perpendicular bisector is equally distant from the chord’s endpoints. Therefore the circle’s center lies on that bisector. As Math Open Reference explains, two differently oriented chord bisectors intersect at the center.

- 【Aluminum alloy material】The base of the Circle Center Finder is made of aluminum alloy, CNC machined with anodized finish, rounded edges, high strength, torsion resistance, corrosion resistance and durability.
- 【Positioning function】The Circle Center Finder Tool uses to accurately and efficiently locate the center of both round and square stock, randomly draw two lines, the intersection point is the center of the circle.
- 【Other purpose】Draw 45 and 90 degree line. Use the base as a positioning block, adjust its position on the ruler, and you can get a T ruler used to draw vertical and parallel lines on the workpiece.
- 【Advantage】Quick and easy operation, marking soft metal, wood, perfect for finding the center. The Round Center Finder is doing well in production and is accurate in measurement, making it be wonderful choices for woodworking.
- 【Removable ruler】12 inch Stainless steel ruler, metric and Inch two measuring systems, laser engraving, clear and wear-resistant, can be detached or assembled to suit your needs.
Check the result, especially on a painted or hand-drawn circle
Draw a third chord, find its midpoint, and construct its perpendicular bisector. It should pass through the point you marked as the center. If it misses slightly, check that each perpendicular passes through its chord’s midpoint and meets the chord at a right angle. Thick outlines, imprecise midpoint marks, or small drawing errors can make the lines fail to meet at exactly one visible point; the construction describes ideal geometry and does not specify a numerical accuracy tolerance.
The method also works with a partial arc if you can choose two pairs of points on that arc and draw chords between them. The outline needs to follow one circle closely enough for the bisectors to agree.
