This bedroom built-in combines two bookcases, a wall-connected daybed, drawers, and a separate rolling trundle. The most useful way to reproduce it is to treat the furniture as several accurately fitted structures, then unify everything with face frames, scalloped rails, baseboards, crown moulding, and a carefully prepared paint finish.

Kristi Linauer documented completing her version in nine days in 2015, with her mother helping fill and sand wood. That is a report from one project, not a reliable schedule for every room. The instructions below preserve her material choices and sequence while identifying where you must adapt dimensions, fasteners, and finishes to your own walls, mattress, and tools.

The finished arrangement places a daybed between two built-in bookcases. Each bookcase has drawers in its lower section. Extensions, scalloped rails, baseboards, and crown moulding visually join the cases to the bed. A separate trundle rolls beneath the daybed instead of hanging from drawer slides, so it can be pulled out and moved elsewhere in the room.

| Component | Construction described by Linauer | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bookcases | 2-by-4 bases; MDF boxes; shoe moulding used as shelf supports; real-wood 1-by-2 face-frame stiles and rails | The dimensions are project-specific. The author preferred real wood for face frames because she considered MDF less strong and more likely to allow shelves to bow. |
| Daybed | Wall-attached 2-by-4, side framing tied to the bookcases, 2-by-4 cross supports, and a 5/8-inch MDF mattress platform | The post reports no load test, engineering calculation, or code review. |
| Trundle | 1-by-8 outer boards, an interior 2-by-4 frame and supports, 1/2-inch plywood base, corner L-brackets, and seven 2-inch casters | No caster load ratings or mattress dimensions are stated, so those must be checked for your design. |
| Drawers | Slides installed first, boxes measured to fit those slides, MDF boxes, and 1/2-inch plywood fronts with cabinet moulding | The author said she would favor plywood or solid wood if drawer storage were the primary feature. |
Plan the room before cutting material
Measure the mattress and access space
Start with the actual mattress you will use, not a nominal size from a catalog. Linauer left an additional 1 1/2 inches at both ends and at the back of the mattress. She reported that this made it easier to reach the mattress and pull it forward while changing sheets. Mark the mattress footprint on the floor and confirm that the planned bookcase depth, daybed height, and trundle clearance leave a usable path for bedding.
Check the wall for studs where the daybed will attach. The documented method uses 3-inch screws driven into studs, so the wall connection cannot be treated as a fastening point in drywall alone. Record baseboard, outlet, window, door, and crown-moulding conflicts before laying out the cases.
Decide how the trundle will travel
The trundle is an independent rolling box. It is not a drawer and does not use drawer slides. Leave enough uninterrupted floor and under-bed clearance for all seven 2-inch casters to roll, and plan where the trundle will park when fully extended. Because the source does not provide caster ratings or mattress measurements, select hardware only after estimating the combined weight of the frame, mattress, and occupant and checking the manufacturer’s rating.

Materials and assemblies
Bookcase boxes and face frames
Linauer used 1/2-inch MDF for each bookcase back and the panel against the wall. She used 3/4-inch MDF for the exposed side, top, and bottom. Shoe moulding attached inside the cases supports the shelves. The face frame is made from real-wood 1-by-2 stiles and rails. Her stated reason for avoiding MDF face pieces was strength: she believed MDF would provide less support and could permit shelves to bow over time.

These thicknesses describe her build, not a universal span chart. If your shelves are wider, carry heavier books, or use a different material, recalculate the supports and test-fit a shelf before finishing. Keep the wall-side panel positioned so the case can sit tight without crushing existing trim.
Daybed structure
The wall ledger is a 2-by-4 fixed with construction adhesive and 3-inch screws into studs. Side framing connects the daybed to the bookcases, while 2-by-4 cross supports carry the 5/8-inch MDF mattress platform. Linauer added a real-wood front edge. Her comments describe her confidence in that arrangement, but the post contains no independent structural review or rated capacity. Treat the platform and attachments as a custom project that must be checked for your room and expected loads.
Trundle structure
Build the trundle as its own box around the mattress. The documented assembly uses 1-by-8 boards for the outer walls, an interior 2-by-4 frame and supports, a 1/2-inch plywood bottom, corner L-brackets, and seven 2-inch casters. The separate frame is a practical advantage: it can roll out for access and can be moved to another position in the room. Keep the plywood bottom clear of the floor and verify that every caster remains in contact when the frame is loaded.
Build the bookcases
- Construct the bases. Assemble 2-by-4 base platforms, level them in their final positions, and fasten them to the structure appropriate for your wall and floor. A level base prevents small errors from carrying through every shelf and trim line.
- Cut and assemble the MDF boxes. Use 1/2-inch MDF for the back and wall-side panel and 3/4-inch MDF for the exposed side, top, and bottom, following the arrangement in the finished project. Dry-fit each box on its base before committing to fasteners.
- Add shelf supports. Attach shoe moulding inside both sides of each case at matching heights. Place the shelves on these ledges and verify that the fronts sit flush with the face frame.
- Make the face frames. Cut real-wood 1-by-2 stiles and rails, square the frame, and attach it to the MDF box. The frame hides raw MDF edges and supplies the visible strength around each opening.
- Connect the extensions. Tie the bookcase and daybed framing together so the three elements read as one built-in. Keep the opening around the mattress consistent from side to side.
Cut and install the scalloped rails
The scalloped top rails are a focal detail, so make a full-size paper pattern before cutting expensive stock. Transfer the pattern to the rail, mark the centerlines and ends, and clamp the work securely. Linauer recommends a detail or curve blade for the tight curves. Match the blade to your own jigsaw; no brand or model is specified.

- Excellent Versatility: The twin daybed can be effortlessly transformed from two single beds to a spacious king-size bed, whether it is for daytime use or overnight stays, this sofa bed can easily meet your various needs.
- Storage and Charging 2-in-1: The daybed features a headboard with storage and a charging station, along with extra storage pockets, solving both storage and charging challenges.
- Sturdy Construction: The daybed with trundle features a heavy-duty metal frame to ensure long-lasting durability and extraordinary stability, and supports up to 900 lbs. You can trust it for both daily use and occasional guest stays. The frame made of FSC-Certified wood.
- Industrial Retro Style: This day bed is the perfect combination of beauty and functionality. Its unique aesthetic adds a unique charm to any room.
- Round Armrest Design: The armrests of the trundle bed not only enhance its beauty with smooth and elegant curves but also improve comfort and safety. The rounded armrests provide a gentle place to lean against, ensuring a comfortable sitting or lying experience.
Cut just outside the layout line, then sand back to the line. Ease splintered edges before the rail is attached. Test the rail against both bookcases and the daybed extension, because a small mismatch is conspicuous once primer and paint create a continuous highlight across the built-in.
Frame the daybed and mattress platform
- Locate studs. Mark the stud positions on the wall at the height required for your mattress and desired sitting height.
- Install the wall member. Apply construction adhesive and drive 3-inch screws into the studs. Do not substitute drywall-only anchors for this connection.
- Build the side framing. Connect the side members to the bookcases and add 2-by-4 cross supports. Keep the frame square while fastening.
- Fit the platform. Place the 5/8-inch MDF mattress platform on the supports and add the real-wood front edge. Leave the planned 1 1/2-inch access allowance at both ends and the back.
- Check movement. Put the mattress in place temporarily, confirm that sheets can be changed, and make sure the trundle path remains clear before closing the structure with trim.
Build the rolling trundle
Measure the mattress that will occupy the trundle and size the box around it. Assemble the 1-by-8 outer boards, then install the interior 2-by-4 frame and supports. Fit the 1/2-inch plywood base and reinforce the corners with L-brackets. Install seven 2-inch casters so the box rolls independently from the daybed.
Before adding the decorative front, roll the empty and then loaded trundle through its full travel. Look for rubbing at the bookcase bases, uneven caster contact, and interference from flooring transitions. The finished facade should be added only after the rolling frame works; otherwise, a trim adjustment can force you to disassemble the box.

Fit the drawers to the installed slides
Drawer sizing follows the slides, not the other way around. Linauer’s sequence was to install the drawer glides first and then measure the clear opening for each box. This avoids guessing at the required width when the slides’ actual side clearance differs from a nominal specification.

- Easy Assembly: Twin size day bed frame parts, required hardware and clear installation instructions are all packed in the box, you can install this daybed with pop up trundle in 20-30 minutes.
- Mount the left and right glides level and at matching heights.
- Measure the opening after the glides are installed, including the manufacturer’s required clearance.
- Build each relatively small drawer box to those measured dimensions. The finished-project account uses MDF for the boxes.
- Test the box through its full travel before attaching a front.
- Cut 1/2-inch plywood drawer fronts, add cabinet moulding, and align the reveals across the bookcases.
For a design in which drawers carry substantial storage, Linauer said she would prefer plywood or solid wood instead of MDF. That is her material preference, not a tested capacity specification.

Fill and sand in the right order
Complete structural fastening and trim installation before final surface preparation. Fill fastener holes, seams, and imperfections, then sand until transitions between MDF, real wood, plywood, and moulding feel uniform. Linauer’s mother helped with filling and sanding during the original project, which illustrates how much time this stage can consume on a multi-part built-in.
Pay special attention to MDF edges, the scalloped cuts, drawer-front joints, and the junction where the daybed front edge meets the bookcases. Vacuum dust and wipe surfaces according to the coating manufacturer’s directions before priming.

Prime, paint, and protect the details
The documented finish sequence includes priming and painting after wood filling and sanding. Prime exposed MDF edges and repaired areas thoroughly, allow the stated product recoat time, and sand lightly between coats if the product instructions call for it. Paint the broad case surfaces before installing fragile decorative pieces when that makes access easier, but keep the final coat continuous across rails, moulding, drawer fronts, and the trundle facade.

Use painter’s tape only where it will not pull a fresh film from the adjacent surface. Remove it while the edge is still workable, following the coating instructions. Let the paint harden before loading shelves, fitting mattresses, or rolling the trundle; a dry-to-touch surface can still be vulnerable to dents.
Install the architectural trim
Baseboards and crown moulding are what make separate boxes look built in. Scribe or carefully cope trim where walls are out of square, keep joints aligned with the bookcase and daybed lines, and fill nail holes before the final paint coat. The decorative trundle front should echo the face-frame and moulding language without reducing the clearance needed to roll the unit out.
Check that trim does not block the 1 1/2-inch mattress access allowance, catch bedding, or narrow the trundle opening. A visually perfect moulding line is not a successful finish if sheets cannot be changed or the rolling bed cannot be removed.

- Uneven shelves: Recheck that shoe-moulding supports are level and installed at identical heights before blaming the shelf stock.
- Bow in a shelf: Reduce the span, add support, or change material. The author specifically cautioned that MDF face pieces offer less strength and that shelves could bow over time.
- Daybed movement: Confirm that the wall member is actually screwed into studs and that side framing is tied to the cases. The source provides no engineering rating, so obtain qualified advice for unusual loads.
- Drawer binding: Measure the opening with the slides installed, verify that both slides are parallel, and remake the box before forcing the hardware.
- Trundle sticking: Inspect all seven casters, check for floor transitions and trim interference, and verify that the loaded frame remains level.
- Visible paint ridges: Fill, sand, remove dust, and reprime repaired areas before the next finish coat rather than trying to hide defects with a heavy final coat.
- Mattress difficult to reach: Revisit the planned 1 1/2-inch allowances at both ends and the back; do not close the opening with decorative trim until bedding access is confirmed.
What to treat as adaptable
This project is a 2015 personal build record by one DIY author, not a universal plan. It does not provide independent testing, structural calculations, safety certification, building-code review, current tool or material availability, exact mattress dimensions, or caster load ratings. Adapt the lumber, panel thicknesses, fasteners, clearances, and paint system to your room and local requirements. For a platform expected to carry substantial or unusual loads, have the attachment and framing reviewed by a qualified professional.
Its most transferable lessons are process decisions: build level bases, fit drawer boxes after installing their slides, use a curve blade suited to the jigsaw for scalloped cuts, leave working clearance around the mattress, and keep the trundle as a separately serviceable rolling unit. Once those decisions are settled, filling, sanding, priming, painting, and trim installation can make the individual assemblies read as one finished bedroom wall.
