A door that will not latch usually has one of four problems: the hinges have loosened and the door has sagged, the strike plate no longer lines up with the latch bolt, the latch mechanism is dirty or sticking, or the latch and its fasteners are worn or loose. Watch exactly where the latch meets the strike, then make the least-invasive repair that addresses that cause. Correct a sagging door before moving the strike plate; otherwise, you may hide the hinge problem and create a new alignment issue.

The checks below distinguish a door that needs alignment from one that needs latch service or replacement. You can do most of them with a screwdriver; a file, chisel, drill, wood glue, and replacement hardware are needed only for specific repairs.

Start with the symptom: alignment or mechanism?

Open the door and operate the handle or knob several times. The spring latch should retract and extend smoothly while the door is open. Then close the door slowly and watch the latch bolt enter the strike opening. Do not begin filing or moving hardware until you know which part is failing.

What you observe Most likely cause First repair to try
The door has dropped, the top edge rubs, or you must lift or push the door to latch it. Loose hinges or door sag Tighten and correct the hinges, especially the top hinge.
The latch works easily with the door open but strikes the edge of the opening above, below, or to one side. Strike-plate misalignment Tighten, adjust, or relocate the strike plate.
The latch is hard to retract or does not spring back even with the door open. Dirt, dried lubricant, wear, or internal damage Clean and lubricate the latch; replace it if it remains faulty.
The handle, latch faceplate, or screws move in the door, or the latch will not stay secured. Loose or stripped fasteners, or a failed latch Repair the screw holes and fastenings, then replace the latch if necessary.
The strike plate, latch bolt, or surrounding wood is visibly bent, cracked, or rotten. Damaged hardware or frame Replace the damaged part and assess whether professional repair is needed.

Uneven gaps around the closed door and shiny rub marks on the strike or latch are useful evidence. A mark on only one edge of the strike opening points to alignment; resistance that remains when the door is open points to the latch mechanism.

Fix 1: Tighten hinges and correct door sag

A sagging door changes the latch height and can make you slam the door or lift it to get it shut. Hinges carry the door’s weight, so they are the first place to correct when the reveal—the gap between door and frame—is uneven or the latch meets the strike too high or too low.

Inspect the hinge side before touching the strike

  1. Open the door about halfway and look at the reveal along the top and latch edges. A narrowing gap at the top latch corner or rubbing along the frame indicates movement.
  2. Close the door slowly while watching the latch. Note whether the bolt contacts the strike above, below, or beside its opening.
  3. Check every hinge leaf and screw for movement. Pay particular attention to the top hinge, which resists most of the door’s pull.

Tighten without creating a new bind

  1. Support the door so its weight is not pulling on the hinge while you tighten the screws.
  2. Drive the existing screws snugly into the jamb and door. Do not overtighten until the hinge leaf twists or the wood compresses.
  3. If a longer screw is needed to reach solid framing, make sure its head sits flush in the hinge countersink. As carpenter Nathan Gilbert explains, a screw head that projects beyond the hinge leaf can bind against the frame when the door closes and alter the alignment.
  4. Close and open the door after each hinge is adjusted. Stop when the reveal is even and the latch enters the strike without lifting or pushing the door.

If the hinge leaf or jamb wood is damaged, simply tightening a screw may not hold. Repair the wood or use an appropriate reinforcement method before making a strike adjustment. A strike plate moved to compensate for a door that is still sagging will need to be moved again after the hinges are repaired.

Fix 2: Adjust or replace the strike plate

Use this repair when the door sits squarely in the frame and the latch operates normally with the door open, but the bolt misses the strike opening. The strike is the metal plate on the jamb that receives the latch bolt. Its opening may be too high, too low, too far toward the room, or too far toward the stop.

Try the least-invasive adjustment first

  1. Tighten both strike screws and test the door. A loose plate can shift enough to block the bolt.
  2. Apply a small removable mark to the latch bolt or strike contact area, close the door gently, and reopen it. The transfer mark shows where the bolt is hitting.
  3. If the opening is only slightly off, enlarge the appropriate edge with a small file. Remove the minimum material needed for full bolt entry; aggressive filing can weaken the jamb or leave the latch poorly supported.

Relocate a plate that cannot be filed into alignment

  1. Remove the strike and trace its outline so the new position remains clear of the door stop.
  2. Fill the old screw holes with wood filler or suitable wood plugs. Let the filler dry completely, then sand it flush.
  3. Mark the new plate position from the actual latch contact, not from the old holes. Drill pilot holes to reduce the risk of splitting the jamb.
  4. Secure the plate, close the door slowly, and test the latch repeatedly. The bolt should enter without scraping and should seat deeply enough for the lock to engage.

Replace a plate that is bent, cracked, badly worn, or too small to support the latch. An adjustable strike plate can provide finer positioning when its dimensions and screw pattern are compatible with the existing lockset. Do not assume an adjustable plate will fit every door preparation; compare the opening, plate size, and screw locations before buying.

Fix 3: Clean and lubricate a sticky latch

If the latch is difficult to retract with the door open, alignment is not the first problem. Dust, paint, dried lubricant, corrosion, or worn internal parts can keep the bolt from moving fully. Service the latch before buying a replacement unless it is visibly broken.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Service the latch mechanism

  1. Remove the screws holding the latch faceplate to the door edge and withdraw the latch mechanism. Keep the screws together so they return to their original locations.
  2. Brush or wipe away dirt and hardened residue. Check that the bolt is straight and that its spring returns it when the handle is released.
  3. Apply a small amount of dry lubricant to the moving latch parts. Avoid flooding the mechanism; excess wet lubricant can collect dust and migrate into the lock.
  4. Reinstall the latch with the sloped side of the bolt facing the strike, unless the lockset design specifies another orientation. Tighten the faceplate evenly and test the handle with the door open.
  5. Close the door and test again. The bolt should move freely under handle pressure and spring out completely when released.

The latch bolt and the key cylinder are different components. Lubricating a cylinder does not cure a latch bolt that binds, and forcing lubricant into the wrong opening can contaminate the lock. Follow the hardware maker’s instructions for each part.

Know when cleaning is no longer enough

Replace the mechanism if the bolt is bent, the spring is broken, the faceplate is damaged, or the latch still sticks after cleaning and lubrication. A persistently faulty latch can prevent the door from staying closed even when the strike is perfectly aligned.

Fix 4: Repair loose hardware or replace a failed latch

Loose handles, a moving faceplate, and screws that spin without tightening allow the latch to shift inside the door. Secure that hardware before changing the strike.

Restore loose or stripped screw holes

  1. Tighten the visible handle, latch, and faceplate screws evenly. Do not strip the heads by using an undersized driver.
  2. For a stripped wood screw hole, remove the screw, pack the hole with small pieces of wooden toothpick and wood glue, and allow the glue to set.
  3. Trim or sand the repair flush, drill a small pilot hole, and reinstall the screw. Test the handle and latch for movement.
  4. Where the damage is more extensive, a longer screw that reaches solid framing or a reinforcement plate may provide better support. Verify that any longer screw does not strike wiring, plumbing, or glass and that its head sits flush where the hinge or plate must close.

Choose a compatible replacement latch

Measure before ordering. Record the backset—the distance from the door edge to the center of the handle or knob—along with the door thickness, latch style, and faceplate shape and size. A tubular latch is a common replacement for a damaged tubular mechanism, but the new part must match the existing door preparation. A latch with the wrong backset can leave the handle off-center or fail to meet the strike.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Remove the old latch and compare its dimensions with the replacement.
  2. Insert the new latch with the bolt facing the strike and secure the faceplate without forcing it into a misaligned recess.
  3. Reinstall the spindle, handle or knobs, and any through-bolts according to the hardware instructions.
  4. Operate the handle with the door open, then close and open the door several times. Confirm that the latch retracts fully, springs out, and remains seated in the strike.

If the replacement does not fit the original recess, do not enlarge the door indiscriminately. A small mismatch can weaken the edge or leave the faceplate unsupported; select hardware designed for the measured preparation instead.

Which repair should you attempt first?

Use the observed cause, not the apparent severity of the symptom, to choose an intervention. The following comparison helps limit unnecessary cutting and replacement.

Repair Addresses Typical invasiveness Tools beyond a screwdriver Part-fit concern
Hinge tightening Door movement and sag Low Possibly a support or longer flush-head screws Screw length and solid framing
Strike adjustment Latch-to-opening position Low to moderate Small file; drill and filler if relocating Plate dimensions and compatible opening
Latch cleaning Friction and contamination Moderate disassembly Dry lubricant and cleaning supplies Correct latch orientation
Latch or fastener replacement Stripped mounting or failed mechanism Moderate Wood glue, toothpicks, pilot drill, or reinforcement plate as needed Backset, door thickness, style, and faceplate

After the repair: a reliable test

  1. Operate the handle with the door open. It should retract and release the latch smoothly.
  2. Close the door gently without lifting, pushing, or slamming it. The latch should enter the strike on the first try.
  3. Apply light pressure to the closed door in both directions. It should remain latched without the handle being held down.
  4. Turn the lock, if fitted, and verify that the locking bolt moves without binding. Unlock and repeat the cycle.
  5. Inspect the reveal and the contact marks again. New rubbing, a loose plate, or a screw head standing proud indicates that the repair needs correction.

A door that only latches when slammed is not fully repaired: the impact can loosen hinges, shift the strike, and damage the frame over time. Recheck the original diagnosis if the door works briefly and then returns to the same symptom.

When to stop and call a professional

Get qualified help for severe jamb rot, a split or badly distorted frame, difficult door-hanging problems, or repairs that require removing a heavy or glazed door. Fire-rated doors have tested hardware and clearances; altering them casually can compromise their rating. Exterior-entry doors also involve security and weather sealing, so a loose frame or failed lock deserves an experienced assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The lock is only as secure as the door and jamb around it. If the surrounding wood cannot hold screws or the latch does not engage deeply after correct alignment, replacing a small part will not solve the security problem. Stop rather than aggressively chiseling, filing, or driving oversized screws into uncertain framing.

Tools and parts: buy only what the diagnosis calls for

  • For hinge work: a correctly sized screwdriver and, only if necessary, flush-fitting longer screws that reach sound framing.
  • For a strike: a screwdriver; add a small file for minor enlargement, or filler, sandpaper, and a drill for relocation.
  • For a sticky latch: cleaning cloths or a small brush and a dry lubricant suitable for lock hardware.
  • For stripped holes: wooden toothpicks, wood glue, a pilot drill, or a reinforcement plate when the damage is substantial.
  • For replacement: a latch or strike that matches measured backset, door thickness, faceplate, opening, and screw pattern.

Measure the existing hardware and inspect the door edge before purchasing. There is no universal latch or strike size, and a part that looks similar may not align with the original preparation.
