First match the monitors’ picture modes and brightness, then adjust and calibrate each display separately. Windows and macOS include built-in display controls; for color-critical work, a colorimeter can measure each screen and help create a profile for it. You can improve consistency, but different panels are not guaranteed to look identical.
Start with the quick checks
- Use the same display mode. Set both monitors to their native resolutions and compare them in the same intended SDR or HDR mode. If both offer a neutral or sRGB preset, try that rather than mixing a vivid preset on one screen with a standard preset on the other.
- Turn off mismatched enhancements. Temporarily disable Night Light or other blue-light reduction, vivid or gaming presets, dynamic contrast, and vendor image enhancements. These can change color or brightness independently of calibration.
- Make brightness look similar. Adjust each monitor’s own brightness setting until whites appear comparably bright. The same numeric slider value on different models does not necessarily produce the same luminance.
- Compare under consistent conditions. Use stable room lighting and view both screens from similar angles. Viewing angle can change the apparent color of some panels.
NVIDIA’s monitor-preparation guidance recommends using native resolution and letting a display warm up for 20–30 minutes before calibration; treat that interval as vendor advice, not a universal measured requirement. NVIDIA’s monitor calibration guide

Adjust the monitors themselves
If one screen still looks warmer, cooler, greener, more magenta, or more washed out, use that monitor’s on-screen picture controls. Try its preset modes first; if available, adjust the red, green, and blue gain controls carefully. Note the starting settings so you can restore them.
Microsoft’s beginner guidance also points to monitor RGB controls as an option alongside Windows calibration. Avoid starting with GPU saturation or “digital vibrance”: those controls can make the desktop more vivid without making its colors more accurate. Microsoft: How to Color Calibrate Your Monitor

Calibrate and profile each display separately
A display profile describes the behavior of the particular screen it was made for. Select the correct monitor before adjusting it, and use a separate profile for each display. Copying one monitor’s measured ICC profile to another does not account for the second panel’s characteristics.

Windows
- Search for and open Color Management.
- Select the monitor you intend to adjust; check that the selected display is the one being calibrated.
- Use the calibration and profile controls for that device, and associate the resulting profile with the selected display.
- Check the result in the applications and display mode you actually use. Windows color behavior can vary with hardware, Windows version, HDR or advanced-color settings, and application color management. For the technical explanation of the display pipeline, see Microsoft Learn’s Windows hardware display color calibration pipeline.
macOS
- Open System Settings > Displays.
- Select the display you want to adjust.
- Choose its color profile or calibration controls, where available.
- Repeat for the other display, then check the result in the apps and modes that matter to you.
The controls shown depend on the Mac, display, and OS version. Apple’s instructions for supported Pro Display and Mac models are at Calibrate your Mac display.

When to use a colorimeter
For photo, video, design, print, or other color-sensitive work, a display colorimeter is the practical next step when visual adjustments are not enough. Measure each monitor and create a profile for each one. Microsoft describes a calibration pipeline that measures display output, generates a corrective transform, stores calibration data, and applies it through the display pipeline; the International Color Consortium explains how calibration and profiling support color consistency. Microsoft Learn and the International Color Consortium’s display calibration overview.
A colorimeter can help bring the displays closer within their capabilities. It cannot expand a panel’s color gamut or remove uneven brightness, viewing-angle shifts, or other physical differences.

Why two monitors may never look exactly alike
Even with matching settings and separate profiles, displays can differ in native white point, gamut, gamma response, maximum and sustained brightness, uniformity, panel age, and viewing-angle behavior. An individual panel can also deviate from its stated specification. Microsoft defines display color calibration as ensuring a display accurately matches its reported color space, such as sRGB or DCI-P3 D65; calibration corrects measured behavior only as far as the display and system pipeline allow. If you are choosing monitors for a closer match
Matching models and picture modes generally make consistency easier, but each unit still needs its own adjustment. Compare color-space coverage, white-point and gamma controls, brightness range, viewing-angle behavior, uniformity, and support for hardware calibration. No shared setting guarantees identical-looking panels.
