How to Fix Patchy or Streaky Contrast Paint on Miniatures

Patchy Contrast paint is often normal translucent shading made worse by pooling, half-dry brushing or an uneven undercoat. Diagnose the surface first, rescue wet paint gently, test every dry-coat correction, and use opaque acrylic methods on broad smooth panels.

Patchy Contrast paint is usually a surface-and-application problem, not a failed color. Contrast is translucent: it is designed to settle darker in recesses while leaving raised texture lighter. That makes it efficient on fur, folds, faces and other textured details, but naturally unpredictable on broad, smooth panels. The best fix depends on whether the paint is still wet, whether the variation is intentional shading, and whether the undercoat itself is uneven.

If the coat is wet, stop working it as soon as sections begin to set. Use a clean brush only to move an obvious pool or lift excess, then let the area dry. If it is already dry, test a conventional acrylic touch-up or a small repaint before committing to the whole miniature. There is no universally verified rescue procedure for every dried Contrast coat.

What patchy Contrast paint actually means

Citadel Colour Contrast paint is not an opaque basecoat. It is formulated to provide color and shading in one application by flowing into recesses and leaving less pigment on raised areas. The finished miniature therefore contains deliberate variation: folds, panel lines and texture become darker, while high points remain lighter.

That behavior is useful when the surface has texture. It is much less forgiving on a large, smooth shoulder pad, vehicle panel, shield or cloak. Warhammer Community’s beginner guide, published 18 February 2025, summarizes the intended behavior: “Contrast likes to dry darker in recesses and it works better on textured surfaces, whether that’s fur, the folds of a cloak, or the contours of a face.” A coat that looks uneven on a flat panel may therefore be the expected result rather than a defect.

Patchiness can still be unwanted. A tide mark, a heavy pool at one edge, brush tracks from revisiting half-dry paint, or an uneven light undercoat can make the variation look accidental. Diagnose the cause before adding another layer; a second coat often makes an existing mark darker and more visible.

Diagnose the miniature before touching it

Pooling and tide marks

Look for a dark crescent around the edge of a panel, a glossy puddle in a corner, or a sharp boundary where a wet section stopped flowing. These are signs that the paint gathered unevenly. Contrast is expected to darken recesses, but an isolated pool on an otherwise flat area is application excess.

Brush marks from repeated passes

Streaks that follow the direction of the brush usually come from going back over paint as it starts to dry. The first pass may have been even; the second pass moved partially set pigment and created a visible boundary. Once that process begins, more brushing generally increases the contrast between wet and drying areas.

An uneven or unsuitable undercoat

Contrast is translucent enough for the layer beneath it to influence the final color. A dusty, rough, thin or blotchy light undercoat can show through as apparent streaking. Official Warhammer Colour information describes applying Contrast over a white basecoat and identifies spray undercoats as suitable. That makes an inconsistent base a plausible cause, not a diagnosis that can be confirmed without examining the miniature.

A broad, smooth surface

On an expansive flat panel, natural flow creates more visible variation because there is no texture to break it up. The manufacturer’s guidance specifically cautions against large flat panels such as tanks and recommends textured areas instead. In that situation, the paint may be functioning normally even if it does not resemble an opaque basecoat.

Intentional translucent shading

Hold the miniature under neutral light and view it from normal gaming distance. If recesses are darker, raised details remain readable and there are no hard tide lines, the effect may be the intended Contrast shading. Decide whether you dislike the style before trying to erase it.

Quick decision guide

What you see Most likely explanation Safest next action
Wet glossy pool in a recess or corner Excess paint has collected Use a clean brush to wick or guide only that excess, then stop
Parallel streaks while the coat is still shiny Repeated passes over partially drying paint Do not brush the area again; let it dry before judging
Dark recesses with lighter raised texture Normal Contrast shading Keep it, or test an opaque glaze if you want less variation
Blotches that match a rough or dirty primer Uneven underlying coat Test a correction on a hidden area; repainting may be cleaner
Uneven color across a large smooth panel Surface is a poor fit for Contrast’s flow Use standard acrylic methods for an even finish, or treat Contrast as a tint

Repair a coat that is still wet

Wet paint can still be guided because it has not fixed itself to the surface. Work locally and gently. The objective is to remove an obvious problem, not to make every part of the panel look identical while the medium is moving.

  1. Stop back-and-forth brushing. As soon as part of the coat begins to lose its wet sheen, leave that section alone. A brush crossing from wet paint into a setting edge creates a new tide mark.
  2. Clean and dry the brush. Rinse out pigment, then remove most of the water on a paper towel or cloth. A water-loaded brush can dilute and spread the pool rather than lifting it.
  3. Lift a visible excess. Touch the tip to the deepest part of a puddle and allow capillary action to draw paint into the bristles. Wipe the brush, repeat if necessary, and keep the motion confined to the pool.
  4. Guide paint toward a recess. If excess sits on a raised area, use the clean brush to pull it into a nearby panel line or fold where darker color is useful. Do not drag it across an entire flat surface.
  5. Leave the section to dry. Do not judge the final result from a wet sheen. Contrast can dry darker in recesses, so its visual balance changes as the film settles.

Official guidance supports the pooling diagnosis and the preference for textured surfaces, but it does not publish a specific rescue sequence, thinning ratio or guaranteed drying time. Treat the steps above as controlled handling technique rather than a promise that every wet mark will disappear.

Repair a fully dry coat

Once dry, Contrast is no longer being redistributed like a wet wash. Start by deciding whether the mark is unacceptable or simply translucent shading. A dry coat has no universally verified rescue method that works across every Contrast color, undercoat, surface and finish, so use a test patch.

Option 1: soften an isolated mark with standard acrylic

  1. Choose a hidden section of the same material, such as the underside of a cloak or the rear of a panel.
  2. Apply a compatible conventional acrylic in a thin, smooth layer. Match the value and hue as closely as possible; a very opaque light color may cover the Contrast but leave an obvious patch.
  3. Allow the test to dry and inspect it in the same light in which the miniature will be viewed.
  4. If the transition is acceptable, extend the touch-up gradually rather than covering the entire model in one heavy pass.

The Army Painter’s general article on streaky miniature paint recommends building additional thin, smooth layers. That is broad miniature-paint advice, not a Contrast-specific guarantee, so the test panel matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Option 2: repaint the affected area

When a panel has a severe tide mark, contaminated undercoat or color that is far too dark, repainting is often more predictable than trying to blend the dried film. Apply an appropriate light base over the test area, let it dry, and then use the color method that suits the surface. Official product information supports applying Contrast over a white basecoat, but does not prescribe stripping or re-priming as a universal recovery procedure.

Option 3: add another Contrast coat

A second Contrast application can deepen a color, but it also deepens existing variation. It is reasonable when the first coat is merely too pale and the pooling is acceptable; it is a poor first response to blotches or streaks. Test one small section and compare it with an untouched area before proceeding.

Option 4: change the finish rather than erase it

If the color is attractive but the surface is too glossy or uneven for your intended look, a compatible opaque glaze or later highlight may integrate it. This changes the visual effect; it does not undo the dried Contrast underneath. Keep the layer thin so you do not obscure sculpted detail.

Choosing the correction by surface and finish

Goal Surface Preferred approach Main risk
Fast shaded color Fur, folds, facial contours, textured armor Retain Contrast and correct only obvious pools Overworking creates brush marks
Even opaque color Large flat panel, shield, vehicle armor Use a standard acrylic basecoat and controlled layers Trying to force Contrast flat can leave tide marks
Subtle tint over an existing layer Smooth or already-highlighted surface Use Contrast sparingly as a glaze or tint Transparency magnifies uneven brush pressure
Localized damage repair Any surface with one bad spot Test a matching acrylic touch-up, then expand slowly Color mismatch or a visible hard patch
Completely compromised area Undercoat is rough, dirty or badly discolored Re-establish a light, even base and repaint Loss of surrounding detail if correction is too thick

How undercoat and surface preparation affect the result

Use a light, even foundation

Warhammer Colour describes Contrast over a white basecoat and lists spray undercoats as suitable. The practical requirement is consistency: the light layer should cover the miniature evenly, be fully dry, and be free of dust or loose particles. A translucent color cannot hide a gray patch, a thin corner or a rough spray texture as effectively as an opaque basecoat.

Match the paint to the geometry

Before opening the pot, divide the model into surface types. Use Contrast where recesses and texture can create useful value shifts. Reserve conventional acrylic layers for armor plates, banners, vehicle hulls and other areas where a uniform film is the priority. You can use Contrast as a tint on a smooth surface, but apply it with the expectation that subtle variation will remain.

Plan the order of operations

Paint the most textured sections first if you want Contrast to do the shading work, then handle broad panels with an opaque method. This reduces the temptation to flood a flat area simply because the rest of the miniature was fast with Contrast. Protect already finished sections from accidental pools by loading the brush conservatively and working one controllable area at a time.

Preventing streaks on future coats

  1. Prepare the model. Remove mold-release residue and dust, then apply a suitable light undercoat. Let the foundation dry completely and inspect it under strong, neutral light.
  2. Choose a surface-appropriate method. Texture favors Contrast’s recess-darkening behavior; smooth expanses usually favor an opaque acrylic basecoat or a deliberate glaze.
  3. Load the brush consistently. Carry enough paint to cover the working area without flooding it. Excess liquid is what forms many edge pools.
  4. Work in manageable sections. Finish a fold, panel or other logical unit while the paint is still workable, then leave it alone. Avoid joining a fresh wet stroke to a section that has begun to set.
  5. Watch the sheen. A change from glossy-wet to partially set is your signal to stop correcting. Do not chase a perfect surface while it is drying.
  6. Let the model dry before evaluating it. Recesses can darken as the coat settles. Judge the result only after the film has dried, using the same lighting and viewing distance you will use for the finished miniature.
  7. Test a color and technique first. A spare part or hidden area reveals whether the undercoat, brush load and surface produce the finish you want.

Neither a particular undercoat nor Contrast paint alone compensates for poor application. Preparation and surface choice determine whether the paint’s built-in shading reads as intentional.

Common mistakes and their recovery paths

“I kept brushing until the streak disappeared.”

That usually spreads the setting edge and creates more streaks. Stop, let the section dry, and evaluate it. If the dry result is unacceptable, use a test acrylic touch-up rather than continuing to scrub the wet coat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I added a second coat to make it even.”

A second coat increases pigment everywhere but does not level a tide mark. It may make the whole area darker while preserving the original boundary. Test first; use a repaint or opaque correction when the first coat is structurally uneven.

“The recesses are darker, so the paint must be defective.”

Darker recesses are a defining feature of Contrast. Compare the miniature with the intended finish and surface. If the variation follows sculpted texture without isolated puddles, no repair may be needed.

“I used Contrast on a tank panel because it was fast on a cloak.”

The same paint behaves differently on smooth geometry. Warhammer Community specifically warns that expansive flat panels are a poor fit. Repaint the panel with an opaque acrylic method or reserve Contrast for a controlled tint.

“The primer was uneven, but I blamed the color.”

Inspect an unpainted section or another primed model under the same light. If the foundation is blotchy or rough, correcting the top layer alone may never produce an even result. Test a light repaint of the affected area before attempting a full strip.

What the available guidance does and does not establish

Official Warhammer Colour information establishes the intended uses of Contrast, including application over a white basecoat and use as a glaze or tint. Warhammer Community’s 18 February 2025 guide establishes that the paint dries darker in recesses, performs better on textured surfaces and is not recommended for expansive flat panels. The Army Painter’s article supplies general advice to correct streaky miniature paint with additional thin, smooth layers.

Those sources do not establish a universal dried-coat recovery, an exact corrective thinning ratio, a guaranteed drying time, a success percentage or a tested ranking of brushes and products. Any recommendation that promises one formula will fix every blotchy miniature goes beyond the available evidence. Use conditional testing because paint color, undercoat, humidity, brush load and geometry all change the outcome.

A practical checklist

  • Is the paint still wet, or has it fully dried?
  • Are you seeing a normal darkening of recesses or an isolated pool and hard tide line?
  • Is the underlying light coat smooth, even and fully dry?
  • Is the surface textured enough for Contrast’s shading behavior to help?
  • Would an opaque, even finish be better served by standard acrylic paint?
  • Have you tested the proposed correction on a hidden area of the same model?
  • Have you stopped brushing once the coat began to set?
  • Are you judging the result only after it dries?

Recommended decision in one sentence

Guide only obvious excess while Contrast is wet, leave a drying coat alone, and treat a dry patch as a test-and-correct project: preserve intentional textured shading, use a thin conventional acrylic touch-up for isolated defects, and repaint a compromised or overly smooth area with a method designed for an even opaque finish.
