The error message alone does not identify one cause. First protect the original, confirm the file’s actual format and extension, and look for a backup or earlier version. If the file may be damaged, Photoshop can sometimes recover a flattened composite—but only if compatibility data was saved with the document.
1. Protect the original
Make a copy of the file and use that copy for troubleshooting. Do not overwrite the only original while testing recovery steps. If a backup or earlier version is available, preserve it too.
2. Check the actual file type and extension
Make sure the filename extension matches the document’s real format. An incorrect extension can cause Photoshop to report that a document is invalid. For example, changing a JPEG’s name to end in .psd does not convert it into a Photoshop document.
- Reveal the complete filename in your operating system so you can spot extra or incorrect extensions.
- If the file type is uncertain, identify its actual format using your operating system’s file information.
- Correct the extension only when it does not match the actual format. Renaming is not a way to convert file contents.
3. Check backups and earlier versions
A backup or prior saved copy is usually preferable to attempting to repair the only copy. Look in your project folders, backup system, and any applicable cloud version history or automatic recovery files. Open a recovered version separately and preserve the original.

4. Try Photoshop’s composite recovery method
Adobe documents a way to try opening a damaged file’s composite image. It works only if Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility was enabled when the file was saved. The result is flattened: its layers are merged, so it is not an editable layered recovery.
- Make sure you are using a copy of the file.
- Hold Shift+Option on macOS or Shift+Alt on Windows while launching Photoshop.
- Continue holding the keys, choose File > Open, and select the copy.
- If Photoshop opens it, save the recovered result under a new name. Keep the original unchanged.
This method cannot restore composite data that was not saved with the document, and it does not guarantee recovery.

5. Treat Photoshop version testing as a diagnostic
If you know which Photoshop version created the file, try that version if it is available, or test a compatible newer release. This may help clarify whether the issue is version-related, but it is not a guaranteed fix for this error. Check the document carefully if it opens; the available research does not establish a complete version-by-version compatibility matrix.

When recovery attempts fail
If the correct file type and extension are confirmed, backups are unavailable, and composite recovery does not work, preserve the original and consider qualified recovery help if the work is important. Adobe says it does not test or officially support third-party PSD recovery utilities. Do not assume a paid tool will repair the file, and consider privacy before sending artwork to a service.

Prevent the problem next time
- Keep backups or versioned copies so one damaged save does not leave you with no earlier work.
- Enable Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility when compatibility or composite recovery matters. It can improve future recovery options but cannot add composite data retroactively.
- Enable Photoshop’s automatic recovery information and keep it enabled at an interval suitable for your work.
- Prefer safer save locations, such as an internal disk or Creative Cloud, and avoid saving directly to network shares when possible. Adobe cautions that network saves are more vulnerable to corruption during saving.
FAQ
Does this error prove that my PSD is damaged?
No. The message alone does not establish a single cause. Check whether the extension matches the actual file type, then look for backups and consider version context or possible damage.
Can I fix the error by renaming the file to .psd?
Only correct an extension if it does not match the file’s actual format. Renaming changes the filename, not the document’s contents, so it does not convert another format into a PSD.

Will composite recovery restore my layers?
No. If the method works, it recovers a flattened composite with layers merged. It also requires compatibility data to have been saved with the original document.
Are third-party PSD repair tools supported by Adobe?
Adobe says it does not test or officially support the third-party utilities mentioned in its guidance. Preserve the original, avoid guarantees of success, and consider privacy before sharing artwork with a service.
