There is no single scratch remover that is safe for every surface. The right repair depends on the substrate, its coating or finish, and how deep the mark is. Clean the area first, identify whether the mark is residue, a superficial scuff, lost color or coating, or a gouge you can feel. Then choose a method that removes material, fills the damage, disguises it, or simply protects the surface.
Use the least aggressive option that fits the damage. A wood marker can recolor a small blemish but cannot rebuild missing wood; a car scratch remover is intended for suitable clear-coat defects, not exposed primer; and polishing glass, metal, plastic, or a coated phone surface can permanently change gloss, color, or optical clarity. The ten methods below are deliberately surface-specific.

Identify the surface and scratch depth before touching it
Start with bright, angled light. Wipe the area with a clean, damp microfiber cloth and a suitable mild cleaner, then dry it. Sub-Zero advises polishing stainless steel before deciding that a mark is a scratch because grease and transfer can look identical to damage. The same principle applies to painted panels, plastic, and finished wood.
- Residue or transfer: The mark changes or disappears after cleaning. Do not abrade it.
- Surface scuff: You can see a line, but your fingernail does not catch and the underlying color remains. A compatible polish or touch-up may reduce its visibility.
- Color or coating loss: The mark is a different color, or a clear finish is missing. Recoloring or refinishing is required; a cleaner cannot replace the coating.
- Gouge, chip, or hole: Your fingernail catches, edges are raised, or material is missing. Filling, professional correction, or replacement is more appropriate than polishing.
Confirm whether the surface is painted, clear-coated, plated, anodized, lacquered, waxed, laminated, or otherwise coated. A product safe on bare metal may discolor a finish; an abrasive that works on uncoated glass can haze a screen or windshield. Test any chemical, polish, marker, or finish in an inconspicuous area first when the manufacturer advises it.

Choose the method by material, depth and risk
| Method | Suitable material and damage | What it does | Main risk or limit | Skill and escalation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Clean and inspect | All surfaces; suspected residue or unknown marks | Removes contamination and reveals the real defect | Cleaner cannot repair missing material | Basic; stop if the finish reacts |
| 2. Color-matched stain marker | Stained or finished wood; minor color loss | Masks and recolors | Color or sheen may not match; does not fill a gouge | Basic; test first |
| 3. Wood repair pencil | Stained and finished wood; deeper scratches and nail holes | Fills and colors the recess | Can sit proud or look darker than surrounding grain | Basic to intermediate; refinish extensive areas |
| 4. Clear-finish touch-up | Wood with a damaged clear coat, including small floor scratches | Rebuilds a thin protective film | Gloss may not match | Intermediate; blend or refinish if visible |
| 5. Automotive scratch remover | Vehicle paint defects confined to suitable clear coat | Refines a fine surface defect | Will not repair color coat or primer damage | Basic only when the defect is confirmed; escalate deeper damage |
| 6. Rubbing compound | Appropriate automotive paint defects | Abrasively levels and polishes | Can remove clear coat or alter gloss if overused | Intermediate; follow the product procedure |
| 7. Professional paint correction | Exposed color, primer, broad or complex damage | Uses a controlled multi-stage repair | Requires assessment and trained equipment | Professional |
| 8. Glass polishing | Only eligible light or medium vehicle-glass scratches | Polishes a defined defect | Heat, distortion, and deep-scratch limits; some glass must be replaced | Specialist procedure |
| 9. Stainless-steel polish | Appliance stainless steel; small scratches or stains | Minimizes appearance and restores uniformity | Abrasives can discolor or change the grain | Basic with maker-approved products; refinish deep marks |
| 10. Phone-glass protection and support | Scratched phone or tablet covers and screens | Prevents further damage or obtains model-specific service | No universal safe polishing recipe is established | Basic protection; manufacturer or service center for damage |
1. Clean and inspect before trying to remove a scratch
This is a repair step in its own right, not a formality. Dust trapped under a cloth can create new lines, and adhesive, metal transfer, wax, or cooking residue can imitate a scratch.
- Read the surface maker’s cleaning instructions. Use a clean, soft cloth and the least aggressive approved cleaner.
- Wipe in the direction of a brushed grain on stainless steel; on painted or glossy surfaces, use light straight passes rather than grinding in circles.
- Dry completely and inspect under angled light. Run a fingernail across the mark only on a robust, non-optical surface where doing so cannot create damage.
- Photograph the area before treatment so you can tell whether a change is improvement, residue, or a new haze.
If the mark disappears, stop. Further polishing only removes useful material. If it remains, classify its depth and use the section for that substrate.
How do I repair scratches, nicks and holes in finished wood?
Finished wood repairs fall into three different jobs: restoring color, filling a recess, and rebuilding a damaged clear finish. Minwax’s guidance separates these roles, and no single pen or coating performs all three.
2. Use a color-matched stain marker for a minor wood scratch
A stain marker is appropriate when the wood is basically intact but a small line has lost color. Minwax describes its repair markers as a way to hide minor scratches and restore color, including scratches that pass through the wood’s existing color.
- Clean the area and let it dry. Remove wax or polish that would prevent the marker from wetting the finish.
- Choose the closest color, remembering that the surrounding finish and wood grain affect the final appearance.
- Test the marker on an unseen edge or scrap with the same finish.
- Apply a very small amount along the scratch, following the grain. Feather the edges before the color dries.
- Wipe away excess from the surrounding finish and allow the touch-up to dry according to the marker instructions.
This approach masks color loss; it does not replace missing wood. If the scratch catches a fingernail, move to a filler or pencil rather than repeatedly adding ink.

3. Fill a deeper wood scratch with a repair pencil
For a recess, nick, or small nail hole in stained and finished wood, a wax-style repair pencil is more suitable than a marker. Minwax identifies Blend-Fil Pencil as a touch-up for scratches and nail holes. The pencil fills the low spot while adding color.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Clean and dry the defect. Trim only loose splinters with a sharp tool; do not widen sound wood.
- Select a pencil close to the existing stain. On visible grain, a slightly lighter base can be easier to darken than an overly dark fill.
- Rub the pencil across the defect so material enters the recess, then level the excess with a plastic card or soft cloth.
- Inspect from several angles. Add a tiny amount for remaining low areas instead of coating the whole panel.
- Buff gently after the filler sets as directed by the product maker.
Deep or extensive damage may need color-matched filler, sanding, and a new finish rather than a spot pencil. A filled line can remain visible because grain, sheen, and aged color rarely match perfectly.
4. Touch up a scratched clear finish with a compatible wipe-on coating
When the wood color is intact but its clear protective layer is scratched, Minwax recommends Wipe-On Poly for minor scratches, including small floor scratches. The objective is to restore a thin film, not to stain bare wood.
- Clean the surface and determine whether the scratch is in the clear coat only. If bare, pale wood is visible, correct the color first.
- Confirm that the existing finish is compatible with the proposed wipe-on product.
- Test on a hidden section. Compare gloss after the test has fully dried, not while it is wet.
- Apply a very thin coat that extends slightly beyond the scratch. Avoid pooling at the edges.
- Let it cure as directed and evaluate before adding another coat.
Minwax warns that the gloss may not match. A satin repair on a gloss floor, or vice versa, can draw more attention than the original line. If the repair flashes under normal light, a refinisher can blend a larger area.
How to remove scratches from car paint without attacking the wrong layer
Automotive paint is layered. A typical defect may affect only the clear coat, or it may pass through the color coat to primer or metal. 3M’s scratch-removal guidance targets defects in the clear coat, such as fine marks from wash brushes. It does not establish that a consumer scratch product repairs color-coat or primer damage.

5. Use an automotive scratch remover only for a confirmed clear-coat defect
- Wash and dry the panel, then inspect in strong light. A line that changes color or catches a fingernail is unlikely to be a simple clear-coat mark.
- Read the product label for the paint type, application method, and required pad or cloth.
- Test a small hidden section. Apply the least amount and pressure recommended.
- Work a small area, keep the product off unpainted trim, and wipe residue away before it dries.
- Inspect the result under the same light. Stop when the defect is reduced; repeated passes remove more clear coat.
Do not use this method to disguise exposed primer or bare metal. Those areas need proper cleaning, corrosion control where relevant, color matching, and clear-coat work.
6. Use rubbing compound only with the product’s stated procedure
Rubbing compound is more aggressive than a light scratch remover. 3M lists compounds alongside scratch-removal products, while its professional spot-repair procedure combines abrasives, scratch refinement, compounding, polishing, and inspection. That sequence is a controlled workflow, not an effortless universal home remedy.
- Verify that the defect is suitable for compounding and that enough clear coat remains.
- Use the specified pad, machine speed, pressure, and working area. If the instructions require machine experience, do not improvise with a high-speed tool.
- Keep the pad moving and check progress frequently to avoid heat and uneven gloss.
- Remove residue and inspect from multiple angles before deciding whether a refining polish is needed.
- Protect adjacent trim and clean the pad between stages as directed.
Over-compounding can create a dull spot, holograms, or a thin clear coat. Stop and seek an assessment when the scratch remains after a conservative pass or when the panel’s color is exposed.
7. Choose professional paint correction for damage beyond a clear-coat scratch
Professional correction is the appropriate seventh option when color coat or primer is visible, a chip has reached metal, the damage covers a broad area, or the panel has multiple defects. A technician can decide whether localized sanding and repainting, a blended repair, or panel refinishing is justified.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Ask for a layer assessment: The repair plan should identify whether the clear coat, color, primer, or substrate is damaged.
- Discuss blend boundaries: A spot repair may be less visible when the color is blended into adjacent paint rather than stopped at the scratch.
- Expect a controlled process: The 3M spot-repair SOP includes abrasive refinement, compounding, polishing, and inspection; the exact sequence depends on the panel and finish.
- Do not accept a polish-only promise: Polishing cannot replace missing pigment or primer.
Professional evaluation is also sensible when the panel is a factory matte, textured, or specialty finish whose appearance can change with ordinary polishing.

How to Remove Scratches from Metal, Glass, Car Paint & Plastic
These materials are often grouped together in search results, but they tolerate very different treatment. Metal can lose its grain or discolor, glass can distort when overheated, and plastic can haze or expose a coating. Use the relevant subsection rather than a product marketed for several materials.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Polish only eligible light vehicle-glass scratches
Tesla service guidance permits polishing certain light and medium scratches in specified vehicle glass and warns about heat. Its procedure does not make every windshield or window scratch repairable. The same guidance says deep scratches cannot be repaired by that procedure and require replacement. A Tesla windshield scratch-repair page is dated July 24, 2025; follow the current procedure for the exact glass and vehicle.
- Have the glass inspected to determine whether the scratch meets the maker’s light- or medium-defect criteria.
- Mask surrounding trim and follow the specified compound, pad, speed, and lubrication instructions.
- Work in short intervals and check temperature. Heat buildup can stress glass and create optical distortion.
- Clean and inspect from the driver’s viewpoint and from outside at several angles.
- Stop if the scratch remains deep, the image through the glass warps, or the procedure’s criteria are not met. Arrange replacement when directed.
Do not casually polish a windshield, camera cover, coated display, or optical glass with household abrasive. Removing a little material can create a visible lensing effect even when the line looks smaller.
9. Use manufacturer-approved stainless-steel polish carefully
For appliance stainless steel, Sub-Zero recommends its Signature Polish to help minimize scratches. It also identifies Penny Brite as abrasive, warns that it may cause slight discoloration, and limits that product to small scratches and stains. Deep or large marks may require a metal refinisher.
- Confirm whether the panel is stainless steel and note the direction of its brushed grain.
- Clean first, then dry completely. Many apparent scratches are grease or transfer.
- Apply only the maker-approved polish and use the grain direction, not random circles.
- Use light pressure on a small test area. Compare color and sheen after wiping it clean.
- Stop if the test area looks brighter, darker, or smoother than the surrounding panel.
Abrasive treatment can remove the uniform factory texture. Never assume that a product safe for a sink is safe for a coated appliance door, black stainless finish, or decorative metal panel. Large, deep, or cross-grain damage is a refinishing job.

10. Protect scratched phone glass instead of polishing blindly
There is no supported universal phone-screen polishing recipe in the manufacturer guidance reviewed. HONOR advises using an official protective cover and notes that hard or sharp objects can scratch a glass rear cover. A phone may also have oleophobic, anti-glare, camera, or other coatings that polishing can remove.
- Clean the device with the maker’s approved method and confirm whether the mark is on a removable protector rather than the display glass.
- If only the protector is scratched, replace the protector instead of abrading the phone.
- Fit a model-specific protective cover that keeps hard objects away from the back and bezel.
- If the display, camera cover, or rear glass is cracked, lifted, sharp, or affecting touch or image quality, stop using abrasive products and contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair service.
- Back up data before service and ask whether the exact part and coating can be restored.
Toothpaste, metal polish, and generic glass compounds are not established as safe for modern coated displays. A temporarily less-visible line is not worth losing touch response, anti-reflective performance, or camera clarity.

Plastic and acrylic: polish only a compatible, uncoated surface
Flitz states that compatible plastics may benefit from polish for light surface scratches, while advising a small inconspicuous test, especially on coated or specialty plastics. That is manufacturer guidance, not independent testing, and it does not extend to every plastic, acrylic panel, visor, display, or lens.
- Identify the plastic and any hard coat, tint, print, or anti-glare layer.
- Read the polish maker’s compatibility list and test a hidden corner.
- Use a soft applicator, minimal product, and light pressure on a small area.
- Check for whitening, haze, distortion, tackiness, or a change in gloss before continuing.
- Stop if the surface is coated, optical, or specialty and no explicit compatibility is stated.
For a clear display, safety shield, headlamp lens, or instrument cover, optical clarity matters more than hiding one line. Replacement or model-specific service is safer when a coating is involved.
A practical decision sequence
- Clean: Remove residue without abrasive action.
- Classify: Decide whether the mark is surface-only, color or coating loss, or a gouge.
- Match: Select a method explicitly intended for that material and finish.
- Test: Use an inconspicuous area and compare dried results.
- Work small: Apply the least aggressive amount, pressure, heat, and time.
- Inspect: Check color, gloss, grain, and optical clarity from normal viewing angles.
- Escalate: Stop when material is missing, the defect is deep or extensive, or the test changes the surrounding finish.
The safest repair is the one that matches the damage layer. Markers and pencils are useful on finished wood because they add color or filler; automotive products are limited to suitable clear-coat defects; glass polishing is restricted by depth and heat; and phone-glass protection is preferable to an unsupported polishing experiment.
