Photoshop shows “Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found” when it cannot parse the selected file as a valid JPEG. The file may be mislabeled, have a duplicate extension, be incomplete, or be damaged. The safest order is: preserve the original, verify the real file type, try a local copy in another image app, export a new JPEG if it opens, then investigate backups and storage if it fails everywhere.
Why Photoshop reports an invalid JPEG marker
A JPEG is not just pixels with a .jpg label. It contains structured data segments, commonly called markers, that tell software how to read the image. Photoshop is reporting that the data it received does not match the JPEG structure it expects. That message does not by itself prove permanent corruption.

Common possibilities include:
- The filename extension does not match the file’s actual format.
- An accidental second extension was added, such as
photo.pdf.jpg. - The download, copy, archive extraction, or cloud synchronization is incomplete.
- The file was damaged while being saved or transferred.
- A drive, cable, network path, memory card, or other hardware is returning damaged data.
- The file is actually PNG, WebP, TIFF, HEIC/HEIF, PDF, PSD, PSB, or a camera-specific format.
Adobe’s documented troubleshooting paths cover correcting extensions, removing duplicate extensions, re-saving through another image application, and checking for storage or hardware damage: Adobe’s invalid JPEG marker guidance.
Protect the only recoverable copy first
- Stop saving over the problem file.
- Make a duplicate and give the working copy a new name.
- Copy that duplicate to the computer’s internal drive, not a removable, network, or incompletely synchronized location.
- Perform every conversion or repair attempt on a new output file while retaining the original.
If several files from the same drive or location are failing, avoid repeated writes to that storage until you have checked it. Adobe’s recovery guidance recommends working from copies and using a different local location where possible: Adobe file-recovery guidance.

Fix 1: show the complete filename and correct only a wrong extension
Windows
In File Explorer, choose View > Show > File name extensions (the exact presentation varies by Windows version). Inspect the entire name, including every suffix.
macOS
In Finder, select the file and use File > Get Info to inspect its name and extension. Finder settings also include an option to show all filename extensions. Do not treat the suffix as proof of the internal format; it is only a label.
Look for misleading names
photo.jpg.jpg— likely a duplicate extension.photo.pdf.jpg— the final.jpgmay have been added to a PDF.photo.psd— the contents might be JPEG data that was given a Photoshop extension.photo.jpeg— the name alone does not establish that the contents are JPEG data.
Rename a file only after you have established its true type. Changing image.png to image.jpg does not convert PNG data into JPEG data. Renaming corrects a label; conversion decodes the source and writes a new file; repair attempts to recover damaged data.

For a duplicate such as filename.pdf.jpg, Adobe advises removing the accidental final extension so the name becomes filename.pdf. For a JPEG that was given a .psd suffix, rename it to .jpg only when its contents have been identified as JPEG: Adobe’s extension troubleshooting and Adobe’s file-type guidance.
Fix 2: identify the file’s actual format
macOS: use the documented file command
- Open Terminal.
- Type
file, including the trailing space. - Drag the problem file into the Terminal window.
- Press Return and read the reported format.

Windows and other practical checks
- Try the duplicate in another installed image application.
- Check where it came from: a ZIP archive, download, messaging app, scanner, camera, or export workflow.
- Compare its size with an original or another known-good copy when one exists.
- Use a trusted file-identification utility if the format remains uncertain.
Do not keep changing the suffix at random. Establish whether the file is JPEG, another image format, a document, an unfinished download, or Photoshop data before choosing the next step.

Fix 3: open it elsewhere and export a fresh JPEG
If the duplicate opens in Preview, Photos, another editor, or a browser-capable application, create a new file rather than trying to overwrite the troublesome one.
- Open the duplicate in the application that can read it.
- Choose Export, Save As, or the equivalent command.
- Select JPEG/JPG as the output format.
- Save to a new name on the internal drive.
- Open that newly saved JPEG in Photoshop and at least one other application.
Adobe specifically recommends opening the image in another photo application and saving it again as JPEG: Adobe’s invalid JPEG marker guidance. This creates a readable replacement; it does not repair the original file.
Re-encoding can remove metadata, embedded color profiles, comments, transparency, or format-specific information, and it can change image quality. Compare pixel dimensions, orientation, profile, metadata important to your workflow, and visible quality before discarding anything. A JPEG is flattened, so it cannot restore Photoshop layers, masks, adjustment layers, or smart objects.

A browser preview is only a diagnostic clue. A browser or operating-system thumbnail may use a cached or embedded preview and may tolerate data that Photoshop rejects. Prefer a full export from an image application.

If no application can open the duplicate, check the source before attempting repair:
- Redownload the file and compare the result with the original size when that information is available.
- Copy it again from the camera card, phone, external drive, or other source.
- Re-extract the archive and confirm that extraction completed without errors.
- Wait for cloud synchronization to finish, then copy the file locally.
- Look for a backup, an earlier cloud version, an email attachment, or the original export.
If a source copy opens, preserve it and generate a separate working JPEG. Creative Cloud version history can help only when an earlier, readable version exists; it cannot make a corrupted upload valid.

Fix 5: check the drive, cable, port, or network path
One bad file may be an isolated rename or save failure. Many damaged files from one drive, cable, port, network share, or synchronized folder point to a shared transfer or storage problem. Adobe lists crashes or power loss during saving, network failures, failing drives, damaged cables, faulty RAM, and software that interferes with file writing among possible causes: Adobe file-recovery guidance.
- Work from a local copy.
- Try a different cable or port and recopy from the source.
- Check the drive’s health using the operating system’s storage tools.
- If failures continue across files, stop writing to the suspect drive and consider professional data recovery.
If the file is actually a PSD or PSB
The JPEG-marker message can be secondary to a mislabeled or damaged Photoshop document. Confirm the type first. Adobe documents a composite-opening attempt for damaged PSD/PSB files:
- macOS: hold Shift + Option while opening the file.
- Windows: hold Shift + Alt while opening the file.
A successful composite may preserve the flattened appearance while losing layers. This works only if compatible composite data was saved; it cannot recover a composite when Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility was disabled. It is not a general fix for a JPEG. When JPEG or file-repair software is appropriate
Repair utilities may recover some image data from a structurally damaged file, but they cannot reliably recreate missing bytes. Use a copy, keep the original untouched, and prefer a local tool for confidential material. Uploading personal, client, medical, legal, or commercial images to an online service creates a privacy risk.
Adobe’s recovery article lists customer-suggested PSD utilities, including PSDParse Online, PSDRecover, and PSD Repair, while explicitly stating that Adobe does not support or test them. These tools are aimed chiefly at PSD/PSB recovery, not a simple mislabeled JPEG. For irreplaceable work that fails in every application, a reputable professional recovery service is safer than repeatedly experimenting on the source.

Prevent the error in future projects
- Keep at least one versioned backup of originals and working files.
- Use local storage while saving, then synchronize or copy after the file closes successfully.
- Enable Photoshop’s automatic recovery information in Preferences. Adobe’s guidance describes a 10-minute default and an option for 5 minutes; labels and behavior can vary by release.
- Preserve the original before converting formats or sending files through messaging and web services.
- Test important exports by opening them in Photoshop and another application.
