There are several ways to make a dollar-bill shamrock, and they use different numbers of bills. For the project titled “Fold a Shamrock from a Dollar Bill,” Make: points readers to Chris Gardner’s Curbly instructions and a linked PDF. Because the PDF’s folding sequence is not reproduced in the available page text, follow its diagrams rather than substituting steps from a different design.

Which dollar-bill shamrock design should you follow?

The sources describe three distinct approaches, not interchangeable instructions for one model:

Design Bills Construction Tape or tools
Make:/Curbly single-bill project One bill, as indicated by the project title Follow the PDF diagrams linked from Curbly; its steps are not available in the article text. Not stated in the available instructions.
Crafty Journal assembled version Four bills Three folded bill hearts form the leaves; a fourth bill is rolled lengthwise into a stem. Tape joins the heart points and attaches the stem.
Folding with Yvonne video Two regular bills A separate video tutorial demonstrates its own two-bill design. The video description says, “No glue and no tools needed.”

For the exact-title project, use the Make: link to Curbly’s PDF. If you prefer an assembled version with clearly described components, Crafty Journal gives the heart-and-stem method. For a no-glue, no-tool option, use Folding with Yvonne’s two-bill video; its description dates the tutorial to September 16, 2024.

Follow the exact-title Make: and Curbly project

  1. Open Make:’s “HOW TO – Fold a Shamrock from a Dollar Bill” project, which directs readers to Chris Gardner’s Curbly instructions.
  2. On Curbly’s March 14, 2008 article, open the linked PDF and follow its diagrams in order.
  3. Use that project’s own diagrams for the folds. The available article text does not expose the sequence, so it cannot establish specific crease-by-crease directions.

Alternative: assemble a four-bill shamrock from folded hearts

Crafty Journal’s version is an assembled design rather than a single-bill model. It uses three bill hearts for the shamrock leaves and a fourth bill rolled lengthwise for the stem.

  1. Fold three dollar bills into hearts, following the heart-fold instructions in Crafty Journal’s project.
  2. Tape the three heart points together to form the leafy top.
  3. Roll a fourth bill lengthwise to make the stem.
  4. Tape the rolled bill to the back of the heart arrangement.

Crafty Journal’s author says fairly new, crisp bills make the heart folds easier. If you later remove the tape, do so gently to reduce the risk of tearing the bills.

Alternative: use the two-bill video tutorial

Folding with Yvonne describes a beginner-friendly shamrock made from two regular dollar bills. Its September 16, 2024 video description states that the project requires no glue or tools. Follow that tutorial as a separate design; its bill count and construction should not be mixed with Crafty Journal’s four-bill heart-and-stem method.

Are extra tools or practice paper necessary?

No special tool is established as necessary for the designs above. HouseMart Ben Franklin Crafts’ 2024 dollar-bill heart sheet calls a paper creaser optional and notes that three hearts can be combined into a shamrock. Dollar-sized origami practice paper and a dollar-bill origami book are optional ways to practice or explore other folds, not required supplies for making a shamrock.
