Direct answer: choose the Photoshop Generative AI tool according to the kind of change you need. Generate Image creates a visual from nothing; Generative Fill changes a selection; Generative Expand adds pixels outside the original boundaries; Generate Background changes the environment around a subject; Harmonize integrates foreground and background; Generative Upscale enlarges an image; and Generate Similar creates alternatives from a promising result.

The tool is only the first decision. Selection boundaries, prompt specificity, model choice, variation review, manual cleanup, layered-file preservation, and rights and provenance checks determine whether the result is usable—especially for artwork, product imagery, portraits, and images that will be published professionally.

Adobe Photoshop’s Generative AI tools cover different jobs, so the best result comes from choosing the tool that matches the edit: use Generate Image for a new image, Generative Fill for a selected area, Generative Expand to extend the canvas, Generate Background to replace a scene around a subject, Harmonize to blend a subject into its surroundings, Generative Upscale to enlarge a small image, and Generate Similar to explore variations.

For reliable work, duplicate the original, make the smallest useful selection, describe the desired result with a focused prompt, compare several variations at 100% zoom, and keep the generated layers in a PSD until the image has been approved. Photoshop’s generative features require an internet connection, access can vary by plan and region, and the available models and credit costs can change.

This guide focuses on Photoshop for desktop. Adobe’s documentation for the June 2026 desktop release identifies version 27.8 and documents a model picker containing Adobe and partner models, but check the latest release notes and the model picker in your own installation because these labels and options are volatile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Generate Image and Generative Fill?

Use Generative Fill when you want to change a defined part of an existing image, such as removing an object or adding a prop. Use Generate Image when you are starting with a new Photoshop document and want to create the visual from a text prompt. Use Generative Expand when the original image is suitable but its aspect ratio or framing is not.

Does Generative Upscale recover the true details in a low-resolution image?

No. Generated detail is new model output, not a guaranteed recovery of information that the camera or scanner captured. Inspect faces, lettering, product labels, jewelry, hair, repeated patterns, and other high-detail areas before treating the result as finished.

Can Photoshop AI images be used commercially?

Adobe says that outputs from features without a beta label can be used in commercial projects, with qualifications for beta features. That does not automatically resolve trademark, publicity, copyright, client-contract, model-specific, or other rights issues. Check the exact feature label and current terms before commercial delivery.

Why is a Photoshop Generative AI model or tool missing?

The model picker, your plan entitlement, regional availability, internet connection, and the feature’s current status can all affect what appears. Update Photoshop, sign in to the correct Adobe ID, check the Contextual Task Bar, and consult Adobe’s current documentation rather than assuming that another account or tutorial has the same options.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Treat Photoshop Generative AI as a fast, layered compositing and ideation assistant—not as a substitute for selection quality, visual judgment, retouching, or rights review. The strongest workflow is iterative: generate a direction, inspect it closely, correct the defects manually, and preserve both the editable master and the relevant provenance information.
