How do you remove acrylic paint from clothes? Act while the paint is wet: lift off excess, rinse the fabric, pretreat with liquid dish soap, and wash using the hottest water the care label permits. Air-dry and inspect before using a dryer, because heat can set paint that remains. Dried acrylic is much harder to remove and may be permanent.
First, identify the stain and the fabric
Acrylic paint is water-based when wet but forms a durable film as it dries. Check the garment’s care label before applying any cleaner. If the item is silk, wool, leather, or marked dry-clean only, do not use OxiClean Max Force Laundry Stain Remover Spray; OxiClean also recommends testing any treatment on an inconspicuous area first (OxiClean’s fabric guidance).
| Stain condition | Best-supported approach | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Still wet | Remove excess, rinse, pretreat with liquid dish soap, then launder | Prompt treatment gives you the best chance; results vary |
| Dried | Follow a label-directed stain-spray treatment if the fabric allows | Removal is uncertain; acrylic may be permanent |
How to remove fresh acrylic paint from clothes
- Lift off excess paint. Use a blunt edge or disposable tool and work from the outside toward the center so you do not spread the spot.
- Rinse the back of the stain. Hold the fabric under running water so paint moves out of the fibers rather than deeper into them.
- Pretreat with liquid dish soap. Apply a small amount to the paint and gently work it into the fabric.
- Wash according to the label. Use detergent and the hottest water temperature the garment permits.
- Air-dry and inspect. If any paint remains, repeat the treatment only as the garment and product directions allow. Do not put the item in a tumble dryer until the mark is gone.
These steps follow Crayola’s acrylic-on-fabric guidance, which cautions that results can vary and recommends testing first (Crayola’s fresh and heat-set stain tips).
How to treat dried acrylic paint
Set expectations before you start. Crayola says it does not provide a dried-acrylic removal method because the paint can be permanent (Crayola’s acrylic stain guidance). OxiClean nevertheless gives a cautious process for dried paint, so success depends on the fabric, paint thickness, and how long the stain has cured.

Option: a commercial laundry stain spray
- Confirm the garment is compatible with the product and spot-test an inconspicuous area.
- Saturate the dried paint with OxiClean Max Force Laundry Stain Remover Spray.
- Wait for the period directed on the current product label; OxiClean’s instructions vary the wait according to stain severity.
- Wash with detergent in the warmest water the care label accepts.
- Air-dry and check the result before considering another treatment or any dryer heat.
Do not use this spray on silk, wool, leather, or dry-clean-only garments, and do not treat the label directions as a guarantee of complete removal.
Optional approach: loosen only what is safely removable
The Home Depot advises gently scraping loose dried paint and testing an alcohol-based cleaner on a hidden area first (Home Depot’s paint-removal guide). This is general retailer guidance, not proof that alcohol is safe for every dye or fiber. Follow the cleaner’s label, stop if color transfers or the fabric changes, and never skip the care-label check.

Drying, repeating, and avoiding permanent damage
- Always inspect while the garment is air-dry. Maytag warns that dryer heat can set a stain that remains (Maytag’s laundry guidance).
- Repeat cautiously. Reapply a treatment only when its label and the garment’s care instructions permit it. Crayola notes that results vary and recommends repeating treatment if a stain remains.
- Stop when the fabric is at risk. A fading dye, roughened surface, or weakened fiber is a worse outcome than a small paint mark; use a professional cleaner for valuable or restricted garments.
When professional cleaning is the safer choice
Take the garment to a dry cleaner when its label requires dry cleaning, the fabric is delicate or valuable, the paint has been heat-set, or home treatment causes color loss. Tell the cleaner what type of paint it is and which products, if any, have already touched the stain.

The Bottom Line
Treat acrylic paint immediately with rinsing, liquid dish soap, and a label-approved wash; air-dry and inspect before using heat. For dried paint, removal is uncertain: use only a fabric-compatible, spot-tested product according to its label, and accept that some acrylic stains remain permanent.
