For an indoor wood chair, table, dresser, or cabinet, a documented coral option is BEHR PREMIUM Chalk Decorative Paint in Salmon Coral BCP03. For outdoor metal, use a separate system: Rust-Oleum Universal Bonding Primer followed by Stops Rust Protective Enamel in Island Coral. The two projects share a color family but not a substrate, primer, application method, or curing schedule. Prepare the surface carefully, follow the chosen product label, and test the color in your room or outdoor light before committing.

Choose the coral paint system before you start

Coral ranges from pink-leaning salmon to orange-leaning terracotta. The most useful choice is the one matched to both the furniture material and its location. BEHR’s current US product page lists Salmon Coral BCP03 in its PREMIUM Chalk Decorative Paint range and identifies old and new wooden furniture among its uses. The finish is matte, which suits a soft, vintage-style makeover. See the current BEHR product specifications for the label’s complete surface and application guidance.

For a patio chair, table, or other outdoor metal piece, the documented route is different. Rust-Oleum’s US project uses Universal Bonding Primer and Stops Rust Protective Enamel Spray Paint in Island Coral. Enamel and primer are selected for metal adhesion and outdoor exposure; do not substitute the indoor chalk-paint sequence simply because the shades look similar. Follow the can directions for the exact color and sheen you buy.

Paint chips and screens are not reliable substitutes for a real sample. Benjamin Moore cautions that printed and on-screen color representations can differ from actual paint. Brush a test patch on an inconspicuous area, let it dry, and view it in the room’s daytime and evening light before painting the whole piece.

What to gather for an indoor coral furniture makeover

The BEHR chair project, published October 10, 2018, documents a practical tool list: a quality paint brush, dark wax, a clean rag, and sandpaper or a sanding block. The manufacturer’s chair-refresh example uses those items to turn a plain chair into a coral accent. Add a drop cloth, mild cleaning solution, a bucket, and a vacuum or tack cloth so dust does not get trapped in the finish.

  • Paint: BEHR PREMIUM Chalk Decorative Paint, Salmon Coral BCP03, for a compatible indoor furniture surface.
  • Application tool: A quality nylon/polyester brush for legs, spindles, and edges; a high-density foam or synthetic roller can cover broad flat panels.
  • Surface-preparation tools: Sandpaper or a sanding block, cleaning cloths, and clean water for rinsing.
  • Optional styling products: BEHR dark wax, a clean rag, and a finer abrasive for selectively distressing raised edges.
  • Protection: Gloves, ventilation, and a stable work surface. Keep the piece out of use while coats dry and cure according to the label.

Prepare wood so coral paint can adhere

Preparation determines whether the makeover looks intentional or shows peeling, grease marks, and raised grain. Remove loose or flaking paint first. Clean away dirt and grease with a gentle solution, rinse with clean water, and let the furniture dry completely. Glossy areas need a light scuff sand; as BEHR puts it in its product guidance, “For better adhesion, scuff sand glossy surfaces.” Remove all sanding dust before opening the paint.

When primer is necessary

Do not assume every wooden piece needs a separate primer, but do not skip one where the product guidance calls for it. BEHR specifies primer for tannin-rich woods such as redwood and cedar because discoloration can bleed through a light or bright color. Its guidance also calls for primer on uncoated metal, cast stone, and concrete. If your furniture has an unknown coating, a strongly glossy finish, water stains, or a substrate outside the listed wood use, check the paint label or contact the manufacturer before proceeding.

How much sanding is enough?

For sound, previously painted furniture, the goal is a clean, dull surface rather than bare wood everywhere. Sand loose edges smooth, scuff glossy film, and feather transitions where old paint remains. Over-sanding can expose uneven repairs or create scratches that remain visible under matte coral paint. Wipe or vacuum until no powder remains; dust left in corners will become texture in the next coat.

Step-by-step: painting an indoor chair or wood piece coral

  1. Inspect and stabilize the furniture. Tighten loose joints, remove hardware where practical, and repair damage before cleaning. Label screws or hinges so they return to the correct location.
  2. Clean, rinse, and dry. Remove dirt and grease with a gentle cleaner, rinse residue away, and wait until the wood is fully dry.
  3. Scuff glossy areas. Lightly sand shiny surfaces and any loose-paint edges. Remove every trace of sanding dust.
  4. Prime only the areas that require it. Use the primer specified for tannin-rich wood or for an uncoated nonwood substrate named in BEHR’s guidance. Allow it to dry as directed.
  5. Stir the chalk paint thoroughly. Apply Salmon Coral BCP03 with a quality nylon/polyester brush, or use a high-density foam or synthetic roller on large flat sections. Work in manageable areas and keep a wet edge to reduce lap marks.
  6. Respect the application conditions. BEHR lists a 50–90°F application range, a one-hour dry time, and a two-hour recoat time on its current product page. Cooler temperatures, higher humidity, poor airflow, or a heavy coat can extend those intervals. The surface must be dry before recoating, not merely past the minimum clock time.
  7. Evaluate coverage after the first coat. The chair project says a second coat is optional, depending on coverage and the look you want. Add one when the first coat is thin, uneven, or allows the original color to distract from the coral.
  8. Let the finish settle before styling. Keep the piece protected from dust, water, and abrasion while the paint dries and follows its full label guidance.

Use wax and distressing as deliberate design choices

A flat coral chair can be modern and graphic, or it can look aged and layered. The BEHR example uses dark wax to deepen recesses and corners. Apply a small amount with a clean rag, push more into creases and carved details, and wipe excess from broad flat areas. Build the shading gradually; dark wax can make a light coral appear muddier if spread uniformly over the entire piece.

For an antique effect, lightly sand only raised edges after the paint has dried. Focus on places that would naturally receive hand contact, such as chair rails, drawer pulls, and table corners. Stop as soon as the underlying color or wood peeks through. Distressing is optional and is not required for the paint system to work.

Hardware and upholstery can change the result as much as the paint. The documented chair project suggests updating fabric or hardware. A neutral woven seat keeps coral as the focal point; dark hardware emphasizes the waxed, vintage direction; simple brass or light metal can make the same color feel cleaner and more contemporary.

Outdoor metal requires primer, spray technique, and a longer wait

Metal patio furniture faces moisture, temperature changes, and corrosion, so use the separate Rust-Oleum process rather than indoor chalk paint. Its Island-Themed Patio Furniture project specifies Universal Bonding Primer followed by Stops Rust Protective Enamel Spray Paint in Island Coral.

  1. Remove loose paint and corrosion. Brush away flaking coating and any loose rust. A firm surface is essential; primer cannot stabilize material that is still lifting.
  2. Clean and dry the metal. Remove dirt, grease, and residue, then allow the frame to dry completely. Painting over trapped moisture risks early failure.
  3. Apply bonding primer. Spray Universal Bonding Primer in overlapping strokes, following the can’s distance, ventilation, and recoat directions. Cover edges, undersides, and joints without flooding them.
  4. Apply Island Coral enamel. Use Stops Rust Protective Enamel Spray Paint as directed on its can. Several controlled passes are preferable to one heavy pass that sags or remains soft.
  5. Observe the project intervals. Rust-Oleum states 30 minutes for primer drying, 2–4 hours before handling the painted furniture, and 24 hours before full use. Those are product-specific instructions; weather and film thickness can change the practical wait.
  6. Add clear enamel only if needed. The project lists clear enamel as an optional extra protective coat. Confirm compatibility and recoat timing on the clear product label before applying it.

Spray outdoors or in a properly ventilated, protected work area, and shield nearby surfaces from overspray. Do not place freshly painted metal on damp grass or return cushions and hardware until the stated full-use interval has passed.

Choose sheen and placement for the room

Coral works as a focal point on a small table, chair, nightstand, dresser, or cabinet. Use it on one substantial piece when the room already has several strong colors; repeat the shade in a cushion, artwork, or ceramic accessory if you want the furniture to feel connected rather than isolated.

Benjamin Moore’s furniture guide explains the practical effect of sheen: lower sheen can camouflage minor imperfections and support a vintage look, while high gloss creates a sleeker, more modern effect. The same guide notes that furniture receives more abuse than a typical wall and recommends its ADVANCE product for wood furniture. That is the manufacturer’s recommendation, not an independent comparative test, and it is separate from the BEHR chalk-paint example. Choose a finish only after deciding whether visible brush character, a low-key matte surface, or a polished modern reflection suits the piece.

Troubleshoot common coral makeover problems

Coral looks different from the sample

Check the test patch in changing light and against the room’s floor, wall, and upholstery colors. Screens and printed cards can misrepresent the final shade, so trust the dried sample on the actual furniture more than a digital preview.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Paint pulls away or beads up

That usually indicates grease, silicone, polish, or an overly glossy surface. Stop, let the area dry, clean again, scuff sand, remove dust, and repaint. If the substrate is one BEHR identifies as needing primer, prime before another color coat.

Brush marks or lap lines show

Work in smaller sections, avoid repeatedly brushing paint that is beginning to set, and use a suitable foam or synthetic roller on broad flat panels. A second thin coat can even coverage; do not solve ridges by applying one excessively heavy coat.

Dark areas bleed through the coral

Tannin-rich redwood and cedar can discolor a light finish. Follow BEHR’s primer guidance for those woods, allow the primer to dry, and then apply the coral paint. Randomly adding more color without blocking the bleed rarely fixes the source.

Outdoor spray finish sags or remains soft

Heavy passes, cool or damp conditions, and insufficient flash time are common causes. Keep coats controlled, follow the can’s spray distance and recoat instructions, and use the Rust-Oleum project’s 24-hour full-use interval as a minimum rather than rushing the furniture back onto the patio.

Coral makeover ideas by furniture type

  • Accent chair: Paint the frame Salmon Coral BCP03, leave a neutral seat, and use a restrained amount of dark wax in joints for definition.
  • Small side table: Keep the top smooth and matte, then distress only the legs and apron so the coral remains the dominant block of color.
  • Dresser or cabinet: Paint the carcass coral and use contrasting hardware; test one drawer front first to judge how the shade interacts with the room.
  • Outdoor bistro set: Use the Island Coral enamel system on metal frames, spray removable parts separately, and wait the full-use interval before replacing seats.
  • Mixed-material piece: Identify every substrate. Wood, uncoated metal, cast stone, and concrete may have different primer requirements, so do not carry one surface’s preparation across the entire object.

Care after painting

Use the furniture gently until the product’s full label guidance allows normal service. Lift objects instead of dragging them across a newly painted top, wipe spills with a soft damp cloth, and avoid harsh cleaners that can dull a matte finish or disturb wax. Outdoor pieces need periodic inspection for chips, rust, and water collection at joints; repair compromised areas according to the enamel system’s instructions rather than spraying over loose material.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same coral paint on a wooden chair and a metal patio table?

Use separate, substrate-appropriate systems. BEHR Salmon Coral BCP03 is the documented indoor wood option, while Rust-Oleum’s Island Coral project uses bonding primer and protective enamel for outdoor metal.

Is a second coat of chalk paint mandatory?

No. BEHR’s chair project treats the second coat as optional, based on coverage and the appearance you want. Recoat only after the first coat is dry under the product’s conditions.

How long should painted patio furniture stay unused?

Rust-Oleum’s project lists 2–4 hours before handling and 24 hours before full use for its specified primer-and-enamel process. Weather and coat thickness can require more time.
