You can grow a leather-like sheet from kombucha by letting cellulose-producing microbes form a pellicle at the surface of sweetened tea, then harvesting, rinsing and drying it. The result is bacterial cellulose—not animal hide, and not yet a proven drop-in substitute for conventional leather. For a painting or materials experiment, it is best understood as a grown sheet whose thickness, texture and behavior depend on the culture and how it is processed.
What kombucha leather is—and what it is not
Kombucha fermentation involves cellulose-producing bacteria living alongside yeasts. The bacteria make a cellulose-rich layer, or pellicle, at the liquid–air interface. That wet layer can be harvested and dried into a flexible, leather-like sheet, often called “kombucha leather” or “bacterial-cellulose leather.” The name describes its appearance and use as a material; it is not made from animal skin or from tea leaves themselves.

Researchers have demonstrated ways to grow and process these sheets, but the studies cited here do not establish a universal home recipe or show that the material performs as a direct replacement for conventional leather. For an art or painting project, treat each sheet as an experimental substrate: the drying and finishing choices can change how it feels and behaves.
How the sheet grows
In practice, the culture is supplied with sweetened tea in a suitable container. As fermentation proceeds, a pellicle forms on the surface. Once it has grown to a useful thickness, it can be lifted out, rinsed and dried. Keep the vessel loosely covered rather than sealed so the surface culture can grow; use clean equipment and avoid disturbing the developing layer.

| Study conditions | Growth and harvest | After harvest |

| Wood, Verran and Redfern (2023): sterile black tea and glucose produced the highest sheet yield among the media they tested. Their larger-sheet method used 300 ml sterile tea liquid inoculated with 30 ml original kombucha pellicle tea broth. Study | The authors grew sheets for 40 days under their method. | They rinsed the sheets and air-dried them at ambient conditions for one week. |
| Cavalli et al. (2026): their method used green tea at 7.5 g/L and 50 g sugar in 700 ml freshly brewed tea, with 300 ml previously subcultured kombucha. Study | They harvested the upper pellicle at 5–6 mm after 6–7 days under their conditions. | Their paper examined chemical bleaching and oven drying; those laboratory treatments are not routine home-craft directions. |
These figures belong to the respective study methods, not to a guaranteed schedule. Culture, vessel shape, liquid depth and environment affect growth, and the studies used different setups. A thicker or faster-growing sheet should not be assumed to have better material performance.

Harvesting and drying a craft sheet
- Prepare the culture. Start with kombucha starter culture or pellicle tea broth, sweetened tea and a clean, wide container. The published studies used kombucha culture as the cellulose source.
- Let the pellicle form undisturbed. Keep the container loosely covered and allow a surface layer to develop. The published growth periods varied considerably, so assess the pellicle itself rather than relying on a fixed number of days.
- Lift and rinse the sheet. When it is sufficiently developed for your experiment, carefully remove the upper pellicle and rinse it. The 2023 study rinsed sheets before drying.
- Dry it fully before evaluating it as a material. Drying converts the wet pellicle into a sheet, and the cited 2023 researchers air-dried their samples at ambient conditions for one week. Drying duration for a home sheet will depend on its size, thickness and conditions.
Expect shrinkage and changes in feel as water leaves the pellicle. The studies support harvesting and drying as core steps, but they do not validate a safety-tested consumer craft recipe or a coating system for paint. Test any paint or finish on a small, fully dried sample before committing a larger piece.
What performance tests say about its limits
A 2023 peer-reviewed textile study compared bacterial cellulose with selected nonwoven fabrics and animal-leather samples using apparel-oriented tests. In those samples, bacterial cellulose had lower tensile strength than the tested animal leathers, although it was stronger than the selected nonwoven structures. The authors also found that it retained the most moisture and was the least breathable among fabrics tested, raising concerns about comfort for direct-skin-contact apparel in its untreated state. The same study reported strong abrasion performance: its bacterial-cellulose sample remained largely intact through the reported test endpoint, while the tested animal leather had lost its surface by then. That is a promising result for the particular sample and test protocol, not evidence that every home-grown sheet will outlast leather in everyday use.

Why processing changes the result
Drying is not the only factor. Cavalli and colleagues’ 2026 study found that bleaching concentration and temperature affected yield, whiteness, water-holding and vapor properties, as well as measured structure. Among the treatments they compared, 17.5% hydrogen peroxide at 40°C preserved visible individual cellulose fibers better than the other tested conditions. Other treatment conditions had advantages for other measured properties, so the authors did not identify one universally best treatment and called for further optimization. Read the study.
The study’s bleaching stage involved strong chemical treatments, abundant rinsing and oven drying. Those laboratory conditions are not instructions for casual home bleaching. If a project requires a particular color or surface, begin with an untreated dried sample and test a small area; do not assume a laboratory bleaching result transfers safely or predictably to a home setup.
Choosing it for a painting or materials project
Kombucha cellulose may interest painters and makers who want to explore a grown, plant-free cellulose sheet, but it should be treated as a variable experimental surface, not a standardized canvas or leather substitute. Its moisture retention matters when applying water-based paint, and its behavior after drying or coating is not established by the cited apparel tests.
- Make small test swatches before planning a finished work.
- Record the culture, growth conditions and drying method for each sample so you can compare results.
- Test paint adhesion, flexibility and moisture response separately; success on one property does not establish the others.
- Do not infer environmental superiority from the word “vegan.” The cited studies do not provide a lifecycle comparison across commercial leather alternatives.
The central trade-off is that bacterial cellulose is genuinely grown into a sheet and can show promising abrasion behavior in a specific test, but its strength and moisture behavior can constrain uses. The right application depends on the properties of the particular sheet and the performance the finished work needs.
