Use a hanger made for a cup-and-saucer set, confirm its dimensions against your actual pieces, and follow the maker’s installation instructions. A do-it-yourself alternative bonds the cup to its saucer and then fixes a picture-frame bracket to the saucer’s underside, but that method comes from one 2014 tutorial—not a tested, crack-proof standard. For an especially fragile or valuable cup, an enclosed display case with conservation supports keeps the ceramic off the wall and reduces exposure to a fall.
Start with the right kind of support
A teacup wall display is a small assembly, not merely a plate. The saucer carries the wall attachment, while the cup projects forward and adds weight and leverage. Hardware intended only for a flat plate may hold the saucer yet provide no reliable way to retain the cup. Choose support that explicitly describes a cup-and-saucer arrangement, then check the real dimensions of your set before buying or installing anything.

No source establishes a method that prevents cracks for every cup shape, glaze, material, condition, or weight. Treat “without cracking” as a risk-reduction goal, not a guarantee. Examine the cup and saucer before you mount them; an existing hairline crack, loose repair, or unusually thin section makes a wall display a poor candidate. A fragile or valuable piece may be better kept in a protected case.
A purpose-built cup-and-saucer hanger
A retailer lists a shiny gold-toned wall-mountable hanger for standard teacups and saucers: Bard’s Brand SKU BB50-0571. The listing gives an overall size of 7.25 inches high by 5 inches wide by 2.75 inches deep, with a stated display area of 6.25 by 5 by 1.75 inches. It does not publish a load rating and does not claim compatibility with every teacup set.

Use those figures as a screening check, not as proof of fit. Measure the cup’s height and width, the saucer’s diameter, and the way the cup sits when it is placed in front of the saucer. Compare those measurements with the hanger’s opening and display area. If the cup touches a wire or frame at an awkward point, if the saucer cannot sit fully in its support, or if the assembly is visibly cramped, stop and choose a different system. Ask the hardware maker for clarification when the listing does not explain how the cup is retained.
Measure the set before you commit
Do not assume that “standard teacup” describes your inherited or vintage pieces. Shapes vary: some cups have tall walls, broad handles, flared rims, or a narrow foot; saucers may be shallow, deeply recessed, or larger than the hanger’s intended display area. The same nominal diameter can produce a different center of balance when the cup is set forward.
Recommended Free Tools
- Measure the saucer’s maximum diameter and the diameter of its flat or supported back.
- Measure the cup’s height, widest body diameter, handle projection, and the footprint that contacts the saucer.
- Record the combined height and depth when the cup is positioned exactly as you intend to display it.
- Compare those measurements with every dimension the hanger maker provides, including the stated display area, not just the outside frame size.
- Check that the hardware’s retaining points contact the set without forcing the ceramic against metal.
Because the cited hanger listing gives no load limit, its dimensions cannot be converted into a safe maximum weight. Weighing your set may help you ask the maker a precise compatibility question, but it does not create a rating where none is published.
DIY method: bond the cup to its saucer, then add a bracket
Fair Robin Revival’s August 7, 2014 tutorial describes a different approach. The author uses a matching teacup and saucer, an adhesive, a picture-frame bracket or hook, a hammer, and a nail. The cup is permanently joined to the saucer; the bracket then carries the joined piece on the wall.
These are the author’s instructions and experience, not independently tested engineering guidance. Follow the directions for the adhesive you actually select, and consider the value and fragility of the ceramics before making a permanent bond.

Materials the tutorial names
- One teacup and its matching saucer
- An adhesive suitable for the materials, used according to its product directions
- A picture-frame bracket or hook for the saucer’s underside
- A hammer and nail for the wall attachment
Step 1: dry-fit the arrangement
Place the cup on the saucer exactly as it will appear on the wall. Confirm that the base sits where you want it and that the handle and rim have enough visual clearance. This is the point to reject a mismatched set; after bonding, the orientation is no longer easily changed.

Step 2: apply adhesive at the cup base
The tutorial says to apply adhesive around the base of the cup, set the cup onto the saucer, and add adhesive at the joint. Use only the amount and application method permitted by the adhesive’s own instructions. Avoid treating a bead of adhesive as a substitute for a product-specific cure time or surface-preparation requirement.
Step 3: keep the cup stable while the joint cures
The author says to weight the cup and wait three to four hours, or follow the adhesive directions. Keep the assembly undisturbed for the full stated cure period. A joint that feels immobile on the surface may not have reached its final strength, so do not attach the wall bracket early merely because the cup appears to stand still.
Step 4: attach the picture-frame bracket or hook
After the cup-to-saucer joint has set, the tutorial places a picture-frame bracket or hook on the underside of the saucer. Position it so the wall hardware will support the set in the intended orientation and so the fastener does not interfere with the cup joint. Use the bracket maker’s directions for surface preparation and bonding.
Step 5: allow the second bond to dry
The tutorial calls for another three to four hours of drying, or overnight, before hanging. Respect whichever period is longer under the adhesive’s directions. Do not test the assembly by lifting it from the cup, handle, or rim; hold the saucer and bracket area while moving it.

What the tutorial says about hot glue
The author reports that a hot-glue attempt failed and advises against substituting hot glue for the adhesive used in the project. That is an account of one project, not proof that every other adhesive succeeds or that hot glue fails for every ceramic, glaze, joint, or load. Choose an adhesive only after reading its instructions and deciding whether a permanent bond is appropriate for your piece.
Why a plate hanger or adhesive disc may not solve the problem
The Home Depot guide on hanging plates says an adhesive disc should be recommended for the plate’s material and that the plate back must be clean, dust-free, and smooth. It also warns that improvised paper-clip hangers can give way, allowing plates to fall and shatter.
Those instructions concern plates. They do not demonstrate that a plate-only hanger will retain a cup attached in front of the saucer. A disc may support the saucer’s back while the forward cup changes the load and the balance. Unless the hardware maker expressly approves the complete cup-and-saucer assembly, treat the product as a saucer-only option and do not infer compatibility from plate instructions.
If you are considering an adhesive disc
- Read the disc maker’s material and weight requirements.
- Confirm that the saucer’s back is smooth, clean, and free of dust, as the Home Depot guide specifies.
- Ask whether the system is rated for a three-dimensional cup-and-saucer assembly, not just a flat plate.
- Do not add an improvised paper-clip hanger; the cited guide warns that such hangers can give way.
- If the maker does not address the cup, choose a support designed and described for both pieces instead.
Comparison: purpose-built hanger versus the DIY bond
| Question | Purpose-built cup-and-saucer hanger | DIY cup-to-saucer mounting |
|---|---|---|
| What is it designed to support? | The cited listing specifically describes standard teacups and saucers. | The tutorial joins one cup to one saucer, then hangs the joined object. |
| How is the cup retained? | By the hanger’s physical support, according to its design; the listing does not explain every set’s fit. | By an adhesive joint between the cup base and saucer. |
| What must be checked? | Overall dimensions and display-area dimensions against the actual set. | Adhesive suitability, joint placement, cure time, bracket placement, and the permanent nature of the bond. |
| Is a load rating published? | Not stated for SKU BB50-0571. | Not established by the tutorial. |
| What evidence is available? | A product description with dimensions, but no universal compatibility claim. | One author’s 2014 instructions and reported experience, not an independent safety test. |
These differences describe the decisions you need to make; they do not establish that one method is safer for every cup. The actual set, hardware instructions, adhesive directions, and condition of the ceramics control the outcome.
A practical installation checklist
Before buying or bonding
- Identify whether your hardware is intended for both a cup and a saucer or only a plate.
- Measure the set and compare it with the hanger’s opening and display area.
- Look for a published load rating. If none is given, do not invent a maximum weight.
- Decide whether you can accept a permanent cup-to-saucer bond.
- For an especially valuable or delicate piece, consider a protected case instead of a wall suspension.
Before putting weight on the wall hardware
- Complete every adhesive cure period required by the product directions.
- For the DIY method, allow the cup-to-saucer joint to set before adding the bracket, then allow the bracket bond to dry for the stated period or overnight as the tutorial describes.
- Move the assembly by supporting the saucer and bracket area, never by the cup or handle.
- Use only the wall fastener and installation method specified for the hanger or bracket.
Troubleshooting common problems
The cup does not sit securely in the purchased hanger
Stop before hanging it. Recheck the cup, saucer, and display-area measurements. A product described for standard teacups may not fit a tall, unusually wide, or differently shaped set. Contact the maker with the measurements, or select hardware whose design explicitly accommodates your arrangement.

The listing gives dimensions but no weight limit
Dimensions show whether the set may fit; they do not establish how much the hanger can safely carry. Because the cited listing does not state a load rating, ask the maker for a written limit and compatibility guidance rather than extrapolating from the metal’s appearance or the hanger’s size.
The saucer fits, but the cup projects beyond the support
Treat this as a design mismatch. Plate-only instructions do not prove retention of a forward cup. Do not rely on an improvised clip or a second unapproved adhesive to compensate; choose a cup-and-saucer support or move the piece to a case.
The adhesive joint is still soft at the planned hanging time
Do not hang it. Extend the cure period according to the adhesive directions. In the Fair Robin Revival procedure, the cup joint is allowed three to four hours or the directed period, and the bracket joint receives another three to four hours or overnight. A soft or movable bond is a reason to wait, not a reason to test it on the wall.
You are tempted to substitute hot glue
The tutorial’s author reports that a hot-glue attempt failed and advises against that substitution. Treat the warning as project-specific evidence. Use the adhesive selected for the project only as its manufacturer directs, and reconsider the DIY method if the piece is too valuable to bond permanently.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For fragile pieces, use a display case instead
The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa’s guide to mounting and displaying objects describes a different goal: stabilizing glazed ceramics inside an enclosed display case. It names a small amount of dental wax, quake putty, or quake wax applied to the base, and it describes Rhoplex as a conservation adhesive used to hold objects in place.

Those materials and instructions are for case display, not for suspending a cup from a wall. Their relevance is the lower-exposure alternative: the object remains supported inside an enclosure rather than relying on a wall hanger and a projecting cup. Follow the museum or conservator’s guidance for the case and the specific ceramic; do not transfer a case-stabilization technique to a wall installation without qualified advice.
What “without cracking” can realistically mean
No reviewed source provides a crack rate, a laboratory test, or a guarantee covering cups of different shapes, conditions, weights, and materials. The most defensible approach is therefore procedural: use hardware intended for the whole arrangement, verify fit, obey cure and installation directions, avoid improvised plate hardware, and choose an enclosed case when the consequences of a fall are unacceptable.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
That approach also preserves reversibility where it matters. A purpose-built hanger can let you remove the cup and saucer without gluing them together, while the DIY method permanently changes the set. Decide whether display convenience outweighs the value of keeping the inherited pieces unaltered before you apply any adhesive.
The Bottom Line
For ordinary pieces, begin with a cup-and-saucer hanger whose measurements match your set and whose maker explains the installation. Use the DIY bonded method only with full awareness that it is one untested tutorial, and keep fragile or valuable ceramics in an enclosed display case rather than promising a crack-proof wall mount.
