Hanging wallpaper successfully comes down to four controls: use the application method printed on the roll, prepare a sound wall, establish a truly vertical first line, and match every repeat before the adhesive sets. The sequence below shows how to do that without relying on a crooked corner, wasting full drops, or forcing paper into alignment.
Wallpaper products differ in paste, soaking, repositioning and cleaning requirements. Fiorawall’s Installation Guidelines, last updated 16 May 2026, state: “Always follow the printed instructions supplied with your specific product; where they differ from this general guide, the product instructions take precedence.” Treat that as the governing rule for your rolls.

1. Identify the wallpaper method before opening paste
Read the roll label and the supplied hanging sheet before measuring or cutting. Confirm the paper type, adhesive, application method, pattern-match symbol, hanging direction and any required booking or soaking time. Never borrow paste ratios or timings from a different wallpaper.
Paste-the-wall
With paste-the-wall paper, the adhesive is applied to the wall, usually over an area slightly wider than one drop. The dry strip is then positioned on the pasted surface. This avoids pasting and folding each length, but it is not automatically suitable for every substrate or product; use the manufacturer’s specified adhesive and repositioning instructions.

Paste-the-paper
With paste-the-paper paper, spread the specified adhesive evenly over the back of the strip. If the instructions require booking, fold the pasted sides together without creasing the face and leave the length for the stated soak period. Booking allows the paper to relax before it goes on the wall. The correct paste and soak time vary by material.
Pre-pasted and peel-and-stick products
These products have their own activation, water, release-liner, positioning and wall-preparation rules. The sources used here do not establish one universal procedure, so follow the exact label rather than treating them as paste-the-wall paper.
| Method | Where adhesive goes | Booking or soaking | What a beginner must check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paste-the-wall | On the wall | Usually not used for the dry strip; product instructions decide | Specified wall coverage, compatible paste and whether repositioning is allowed |
| Paste-the-paper | On the back of the paper | May be required for a stated time | Even coverage, booking folds and the printed soak time |
| Pre-pasted | Factory-applied adhesive activated as directed | Follow the roll instructions | Activation method and open time |
| Peel-and-stick | Pressure-sensitive backing | Not applicable unless the product says otherwise | Release-liner handling, wall compatibility and repositioning limits |
2. Gather the right tools and protect the room
Choose tools that suit your paper and adhesive. A basic wallpaper hanging tools kit should contain:
- Level or plumb line for the first vertical guide
- Tape measure, pencil and a straight measuring edge
- Paste brush or roller specified for your adhesive
- Smoothing brush or plastic smoother
- Cutting guide or broad taping knife for trimming
- Sharp utility knife with several spare blades
- Clean sponge or cloth for excess paste, used only as the product instructions permit
- Optional seam roller for closing seams gently when the wallpaper instructions allow it
Cover the floor and remove or protect furniture. Keep paste, water and blades away from electrical outlets and switches. Switch off power before removing outlet or switch plates, and do not undertake electrical work you are not qualified to perform.

3. Inspect the rolls and prepare the wall
Check every roll before cutting
In strong, even light, look for printing defects, crushed edges, shading changes and other damage. Confirm that rolls intended for the same room carry the same product reference and, where supplied, the same batch or dye-lot reference. Cole & Son’s hanging instructions and Fiorawall’s guide both emphasize checking roll information before installation. Set aside a questionable roll while it is still unused; once cut or pasted, a defect is harder to resolve.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake the wall suitable
The surface should be clean, sound and smooth, and it must meet the wallpaper and primer instructions. Remove loose material and deal with visible contamination before priming. The available guidance does not define one repair system for every substrate, old coating or damp wall, so do not assume that a single filler or primer works everywhere. Persistent damp, crumbling plaster, active mold, major cracking or uncertain old coatings warrants advice from a qualified decorator or building professional before paper is installed.
Allow primer or repairs to dry fully. A wall that is dusty, greasy, unstable or still damp can prevent adhesion and make later removal damage the surface.
4. Choose the starting point and draw a plumb line
Do not use a room corner, ceiling edge or door frame as your first guide: none is guaranteed to be vertical. Sherwin-Williams’ hanging guidance recommends beginning in an inconspicuous location because the first and last strips meet there and may not align perfectly.

- Measure the width of one wallpaper drop.
- Choose a starting area where the eventual join will be least noticeable, taking windows, doors and the room’s main sight line into account.
- From the corner or reference point, mark a distance equal to one drop less the small overlap you need to place the first strip correctly. Follow your product’s layout instructions if they specify a different offset.
- Use a level or plumb line to draw a light, continuous vertical mark. Check it at several heights; a short level can be moved up the wall, while a plumb line can be snapped from top to bottom.
The guide is an alignment reference, not necessarily the edge of the room. The first drop should follow the line even if that leaves a tapered gap at a corner that will be trimmed or covered according to the product’s instructions.
5. Understand pattern repeats before cutting
Find the pattern-match symbol or written instruction on the label. Pattern type determines where the image on the next drop begins relative to the previous one. Cole & Son defines four common arrangements in its Wallpaper Hanging Instructions:
| Match type | How the next drop aligns | Cutting implication |
|---|---|---|
| Random match | The design can meet at any height | Lengths can be cut with minimal pattern positioning, but still keep the top direction consistent |
| Straight match | The same motif runs level across adjacent drops | Start each drop at the same point in the repeat |
| Half-drop match | The motif on the next drop is offset by half a repeat | Alternate the starting position so the offset is maintained |
| Third-drop match | The design advances by one-third of a repeat between drops | Track the sequence carefully; the next drop does not simply repeat the first position |
Lay two lengths on a clean surface and identify the matching motif before committing to a full cutting run. Mark the top of every drop with pencil on the reverse, keeping the roll direction unchanged.
6. Measure and cut drops with enough allowance
- Measure the wall height at several points. Ceilings and floors can vary, so use the greatest relevant height for each run.
- Add enough extra length at the top and bottom to trim cleanly. The amount is a working allowance, not a universal number; the product instructions and your pattern repeat determine what is practical.
- For patterned paper, add the length needed to bring the next drop into its required repeat. A drop that is merely wall-height may finish in the wrong place in the design.
- Cut one test drop first. Confirm its direction, match and trimming allowance on the wall before cutting several more.
- Cut remaining drops in sequence, preserving the repeat. Keep offcuts in case a small repair is needed later, but do not substitute a reversed or untracked piece into the main run.
Use a sharp blade and a straight guide. Dull blades tear the face and create ragged edges; replace the blade as soon as it begins dragging.

7. Hang the first drop
Paste-the-wall procedure
- Apply the specified adhesive to the wall, covering an area only slightly wider than the drop so it remains workable and does not dry before placement.
- Hold the dry strip by its upper edge, align its edge with the plumb mark and leave the instructed trimming allowance at the ceiling.
- Let the strip rest on the wall without stretching it. Check the vertical edge again before smoothing the full length.
- Using a smoothing brush or plastic smoother, work from the center toward the edges in controlled strokes. This pushes air and excess adhesive outward rather than trapping them under the paper.
- Trim the ceiling and skirting edges with a sharp blade against a suitable cutting guide. Replace the blade when it starts to snag.
Paste-the-paper procedure
- Lay the cut strip face-down on a clean surface and apply the specified paste evenly to the reverse, paying attention to edges.
- Book the strip only if the product instructions call for it: fold pasted side to pasted side, avoid a sharp crease and leave it for the printed soak time.
- Carry the relaxed strip to the wall, align its edge to the plumb mark and keep the paper’s top direction correct.
- Smooth from the center outward with light pressure, releasing air and wrinkles without stretching the sheet.
- Trim top and bottom against a guide, then remove paste residue only in the manner the manufacturer permits.
If the strip drifts, lift and reposition it only when the wallpaper instructions say that repositioning is safe. Do not pull the paper lengthwise to force a pattern match; stretching can make later seams open or the design distort.
8. Add the remaining drops and keep seams aligned
- Check the pattern at eye level before bringing the next drop fully onto the wall.
- Place the new edge against the previous edge as a butt seam unless the product specifically requires another joint. Avoid creating an overlap that shows through.
- Slide the drop only as far as the instructions permit, aligning the printed motif rather than the ceiling or floor, which may not be level.
- Smooth the new drop from the center outward, then inspect the seam for gaps, paste on the face or raised edges.
- Use a seam roller only with the pressure and paper type allowed by the instructions; excessive pressure can burnish delicate finishes or squeeze out too much adhesive.
- On a new wall, establish another plumb guide rather than carrying an accumulated error around the corner.
Wipe excess paste promptly with the recommended clean, damp material and a light touch. Rubbing, soaking or leaving adhesive to dry can mark some finishes.
9. Fit corners, windows, doors and outlets
Obstacles require the same priorities as an open wall: preserve the vertical layout, keep the pattern in sequence and leave enough material to trim. Measure each recess rather than assuming walls, reveals or frames are square. Make relief cuts only as needed to let the paper lie flat, then trim against a stable guide with a fresh blade.
At an internal corner, do not wrap a full-width drop around a potentially uneven angle unless the product instructions specifically support that method. Instead, follow the supplied corner layout, which may call for measuring a narrow return and starting the next wall from a new plumb line. Around windows and doors, keep the design continuous where visible and use offcuts only when their orientation and repeat are verified.

10. Troubleshoot common beginner problems
The first strip looks crooked
Stop before adding another drop. Recheck the plumb line at top, middle and bottom. If the strip is still movable under the product’s stated open time, lift and realign it gently. If the adhesive has set, correcting the next strip will not remove the original error; decide whether to replace the drop while the rest of the wall remains accessible.
The pattern does not meet
Check the match symbol, the top marks and the repeat distance. A half-drop or third-drop sequence can look wrong when every strip is started at the same point. Do not stretch the paper or hide a mismatch with seam pressure; recut the affected drop using the correct sequence.
Bubbles or wrinkles remain
Work from the center toward the edge with the approved smoother while the adhesive is workable. Small moisture-related bubbles can change as the paper dries, but do not puncture, slit or inject adhesive unless the product maker provides that repair method. Persistent ridges usually indicate trapped air, uneven paste or an unsuitable wall surface.
Seams open or show a gap
Check that adjacent edges were brought together without stretching and that the wall was adequately pasted. A seam roller may help only where the instructions allow it. If the paper has shrunk, the substrate is moving or the seam is damaged, seek product-specific repair advice rather than forcing the edges together.

Paste marks the face
Remove it immediately only as directed for that finish. Some papers tolerate a lightly damp cloth; others can smear or lose surface color when rubbed. Do not wait for paste to dry and then scrub.
11. A practical completion check
- Every drop follows the intended top direction and pattern sequence.
- The first edge and each new wall guide are plumb.
- Seams meet cleanly without visible overlap, gaps or squeezed-out adhesive.
- Top and bottom trims are sharp and secure.
- No bubbles, loose edges or unaddressed paste remain after the product’s recommended inspection period.
- Offcuts, batch information and unused rolls are retained until the room is accepted in case a repair is needed.
For a beginner, paste-the-wall paper can reduce handling because the dry sheet is positioned on a pasted wall, while paste-the-paper paper adds paste coverage and possible booking. Neither method overrides the roll’s instructions, the wall’s condition or the pattern-match requirements. A plumb first drop, verified repeat and gentle center-out smoothing are the controls that determine whether the finished room looks intentional.
