You can create changing colors on copper by heating clean metal with a torch and watching the surface as it responds. Published observations include orange, brown, black, and greenish tones, but they come from different procedures—not a guaranteed color sequence. This is an observational craft technique, not a recipe with a fixed time or temperature.

How open-flame coloring works
Heat coloring uses a flame to change the appearance of copper; it is distinct from applying a chemical patina. The visible response develops as the metal heats, so move the torch and watch the surface rather than holding the flame in one place or relying on a timer.
For enameling preparation, Rio Grande advises moving the torch while heating copper. That guidance is useful for torch movement, but its procedure is not a decorative heat-coloring recipe and does not guarantee the same finished colors: Rio Grande’s Enameling 103: Metal Preparation. Ganoksin describes gentle torch heating as a way to alter copper color in a separate metalworking context: Ganoksin’s Multi-Metal Lamination.

Prepare the copper and work area
- Start with clean, grease-free copper. Ganoksin notes that metal-coloring results depend heavily on cleaning and preparation; Rio Grande likewise stresses cleaning and avoiding contamination in its enameling workflow. These sources support careful preparation, although Rio Grande’s page addresses enameling rather than decorative coloring. See Ganoksin’s Cupric Nitrate Patination of Metals.
- Set the work on a fire-resistant surface suitable for torch work. California DTSC’s jewelry-manufacturing recommendations include fire-resistant surfaces and torch safeguards, but they are workplace- and jurisdiction-specific, not a complete guide to home-workshop requirements: California DTSC jewelry-manufacturing recommendations.
- Use the torch according to its manufacturer’s instructions, keep the work area appropriate for open-flame use, and follow local fire rules.
Heat the copper and observe the color
- Place the prepared copper securely on the fire-resistant work surface.
- Set up and use the torch according to its manufacturer’s instructions and the requirements that apply where you work.
- Heat gradually, keeping the flame moving rather than concentrating it on one spot. Observe the surface continuously; no universal time or torch setting is established for a particular shade.
- Stop heating when the surface reaches an appearance you want. The consulted sources do not establish a fixed color chart or exact temperature for each hue.
What colors can you expect?
Ganoksin describes copper changing through orange, brown, and black with torch heat. Rio Grande’s separate enameling-preparation procedure describes dark reddish-orange followed by a greenish color as heating continues. Those are observations from different contexts, not stages in one universal sequence.
Preparation and heating conditions affect copper finishes. The Copper Development Association identifies factors including preparation and temperature in its finish guidance: Copper Development Association: Statuary and Patina Finishes. Do not assume that every copper alloy or piece will produce the same hues.

Heat coloring versus chemical patination
