In Windows 11 Paint, select Eraser, open Size on the toolbar, and choose a larger swatch. This changes the eraser stroke width, not your image’s dimensions. If your keyboard has a numeric keypad, Ctrl + Numpad + can increase the active tool width; Ctrl + Numpad – decreases it.
Increase the eraser with Paint’s toolbar
- Press the Windows key, type Paint, and open Microsoft Paint.
- Open your picture with File → Open or Ctrl + O.
- Click the Eraser icon in the drawing/tools area of the top toolbar.
- Open Size.
- Choose a larger thickness option, then drag across an expendable or blank part of the image to test it.
- Use Ctrl + Z immediately if you remove too much. Save with Ctrl + S when the result is correct.
Paint releases can rearrange toolbar icons or offer different preset choices. Microsoft identifies Eraser as a standard Paint tool in Windows 11, but does not promise that every build displays identical size swatches (Microsoft Paint).
Change eraser size with a keyboard shortcut
Microsoft’s Paint keyboard reference documents width adjustments for the active brush, line, or shape outline:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Ctrl + Numpad + increases width by one pixel.
- Ctrl + Numpad – decreases width by one pixel.
With the Eraser selected, these commands are also commonly used to adjust eraser width. “Numpad +” means the plus key on a separate numeric keypad, not necessarily the plus/equal key above the letters. The official shortcut reference is available at Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts.
On laptops and compact keyboards, the ordinary main-keyboard + may do nothing. A Microsoft Q&A discussion reports this compatibility issue; keyboard layout, Num Lock, an embedded keypad mode, Paint focus, and the installed Paint version can all affect the result (Microsoft Q&A). If the shortcut fails, use Eraser → Size; it is the dependable method on any keyboard with a visible toolbar.
If the Size control is missing or disabled
- Press Esc to leave an active text box, shape operation, or selection.
- Click Eraser again; Size may apply only to a drawing tool.
- Maximize the Paint window so collapsed controls have room to appear.
- Check an overflow or expanded-toolbar menu if the window is narrow.
- Confirm that you opened standard Paint, not Paint 3D, Photos, or Snipping Tool.
- Update Paint through the Microsoft Store, restart it, and reopen the image.
Paint is updated independently of the main Windows release. Microsoft’s Paint Insider notes show continuing interface and eraser changes, including adjustable eraser transparency in some preview builds, so production and Insider installations may not match (Paint release notes).

When the largest preset is not large enough
Use broad strokes
Choose the largest Size option and make overlapping passes. For edge work, zoom in and use short strokes; zoom changes the view, not the actual eraser width.
Select and remove a block
For a rectangular or similarly defined area, select it and delete or clear the selection instead of painting repeatedly. This is faster for large solid regions but less suitable for soft, irregular edges.
Work safely with layers or a duplicate
Save a copy before extensive edits. If your Paint build has layers, verify the intended layer is active. Paint’s eraser is a direct edit rather than a professional, non-destructive mask.

Exact pixel sizes and image dimensions
Standard Paint normally offers preset Size choices rather than a guaranteed numeric eraser-width field. Do not rely on hidden settings or registry changes to create one. If you need an exact diameter, masks, brush hardness, or detailed layer control, use an editor designed for those functions.
Eraser size is separate from other controls:
| Control | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Eraser → Size | The width of the erasing stroke. |
| Zoom | How large the image appears on screen; it does not enlarge the stroke in image pixels. |
| Resize | The image’s pixel dimensions. Ctrl + W opens Paint’s Resize and Skew dialog; it does not enlarge the eraser. |
| Canvas resize | The workspace area around the image. |
If erasing appears not to work
- Move the pointer onto the canvas and test on a clearly colored area.
- Increase Size and check the active layer.
- Make sure the file is loaded for editing rather than read-only.
- If the area already matches its background, test elsewhere.
- Press Ctrl + Z if the result is unexpected, then save a copy before trying again.
Do not assume every Windows 11 Paint version erases in exactly the same way. The result can depend on the current Paint build, layer, image format, and transparency support. If transparency matters, save in a format that supports it and reopen the saved file to verify the result rather than treating Paint’s eraser like a professional mask.

Paint’s conventional Eraser edits the drawing or image directly. Microsoft Photos has separate Erase and Generative Erase workflows with an adjustable brush size, aimed primarily at photo retouching; generative removal may reconstruct the background instead of simply clearing pixels. Availability depends on the current Photos app and device configuration (Microsoft Photos editing help).

Paint also has newer AI features such as Object Select and Generative Fill on supported versions. Microsoft says some Copilot+ Paint features require a Copilot+ PC, the latest Paint version, Microsoft-account sign-in, and internet connectivity, so they are not a universal replacement for the ordinary eraser (Microsoft Copilot+ Paint features).

| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| Shortcut does nothing | Use the separate numeric-keypad plus/minus, make Paint active, check Num Lock or embedded-keypad mode, or use the toolbar Size menu. |
| Size is unavailable | Exit text or selection mode with Esc, select Eraser, maximize Paint, and check overflow controls. |
| Eraser is too destructive | Choose a smaller preset, zoom in, use short strokes, or undo immediately. |
| Large area takes too long | Use the largest preset or select the area and delete it. |
| Need exact size or advanced transparency | Use an editor with numeric brushes, layers, and masks. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I type an exact eraser size in Paint?
Usually not. Standard Paint commonly exposes preset Size swatches; use another editor when a precise numeric diameter is essential.
Does zoom make the eraser bigger?
No. Zoom changes the on-screen view. The Size control or width shortcut changes the stroke itself.
