Yes, you can increase your creativity as a painter—but not by waiting for inspiration or collecting endless painting prompts. The most reliable approach is to separate idea generation from judgment, build knowledge and skill in your subject, use constraints and unfamiliar perspectives, protect your energy, and repeatedly turn rough ideas into paintings that can be tested and revised.
Creativity is not simply producing something strange. In painting, a creative result is usually both novel and effective: it may offer an unusual composition, color relationship, subject, process, or point of view while still communicating, engaging, or solving the artistic problem you set for yourself. The practical goal is not merely to have more ideas. It is to generate more varied possibilities, recognize the promising ones, and develop them into finished work.

What creativity actually involves in painting
Creativity is best understood as a process rather than a personality type. The OECD framework for creative thinking describes it as a malleable capacity involving the generation, evaluation, and improvement of ideas.
For a painter, that process includes several different abilities:
#1 Best Overall

- Fluency: producing many possible subjects, compositions, palettes, marks, or approaches.
- Flexibility: moving between genuinely different categories or points of view rather than making minor variations of one idea.
- Originality: departing meaningfully from the most obvious solution.
- Evaluation: deciding whether an idea fits the intended mood, audience, medium, scale, time, and available materials.
- Development: improving a promising idea through studies, edits, experiments, and feedback.
- Implementation: possessing enough technical and domain knowledge to make the idea work.
A painting can be unusual without being creative if the unusual element has no purpose. Conversely, a familiar subject can become creative through an unexpected crop, structure, surface, color system, narrative, or relationship between forms. A commonly used definition describes creative work as novel and useful, appropriate, effective, or valuable in context. In painting, useful does not have to mean commercially useful. It can mean emotionally effective, visually coherent, conceptually relevant, or successful at creating the experience you intended.
Divergent and convergent thinking
Most creative blocks become easier to diagnose when you distinguish two phases:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Phase | Purpose | Painting example |
|---|---|---|
| Divergent thinking | Expand the range of possibilities before judging them. | Generate 20 compositions for the same subject using different viewpoints, crops, palettes, and levels of abstraction. |
| Convergent thinking | Select, test, combine, and improve the strongest options. | Choose three thumbnails, compare them against your intention, then develop the most promising one. |
Divergence without convergence creates folders full of unfinished ideas. Convergence without divergence produces competent but repetitive work. Strong creative practice deliberately makes room for both.
Creativity tests can measure some aspects of divergent thinking, but they are imperfect substitutes for real painting. Traditional tests do not fully capture craft, artistic knowledge, sustained effort, context, or the quality of a finished body of work. Research reviews identify limitations involving construct validity, domain specificity, ecological validity, and prediction of real-world creativity. There is also no single creativity measure equivalent to an IQ test.
A 30-minute protocol for a painting block
Use this when you need ideas now. It is a practical synthesis of findings on divergent practice, constraints, movement, and incubation—not a single protocol tested in one experiment.
1. Define the artistic problem — 3 minutes
Do not begin with the vague instruction be creative. Write a question that gives your imagination something specific to work on:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- How can I paint this ordinary kitchen so it feels psychologically tense?
- What are 15 ways to make a landscape feel crowded without adding more objects?
- How can I depict rest using only angular shapes?
- How could I make a self-portrait recognizable without showing the face?
- How can I create three different moods from the same reference photograph?
Then define the real constraints: subject, size, medium, drying time, budget, audience, location, and intended effect. Separate fixed constraints from changeable ones. A clear problem is easier to solve creatively than an unlimited request for originality.
2. Gather targeted input — 5 minutes
Find or recall one strong example from painting, one example from a neighboring field such as photography or architecture, one audience or emotional perspective, and one likely failure mode. Look for mechanisms rather than surfaces. Ask how an example controls attention, creates rhythm, limits color, handles scale, or creates ambiguity.
Do not turn this step into an hour of scrolling through reference images. You need material to recombine, not an overwhelming collection of other people’s finished work.
3. Generate without judging — 10 minutes
Set a quota of 15 to 20 possibilities. Make thumbnails, write descriptions, or combine both. During this phase:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Do not erase weak ideas.
- Change the mechanism, not only the color or object.
- Include at least three deliberately impractical or extreme options.
- Try different scales, viewpoints, levels of realism, and emotional tones.
- Combine unrelated ideas at least three times.
For example, if you are painting a portrait, do not produce 20 conventional head-and-shoulder poses. Divide the ideas into categories such as fragmented portrait, environmental portrait, silhouette, reflected portrait, object-substitution, distorted anatomy, limited-palette portrait, and portrait told through traces rather than a body.
4. Take a low-demand break — 10 minutes
Walk, stretch, wash dishes, make tea, or look out of a window. Avoid a high-stimulation feed if you want the problem to remain active in the background. Keep paper or a voice recorder nearby and capture ideas when you return.
5. Evaluate — 5 minutes
Score the best ideas from 1 to 5 on:
| Criterion | Question |
|---|---|
| Novelty | Is this meaningfully different from the default solution? |
| Usefulness | Does it create the mood, meaning, or visual problem I care about? |
| Fit | Does it suit the subject, medium, scale, audience, and real constraints? |
| Feasibility | Can I make or test it with my current skills and materials? |
| Potential | Could studies, revisions, or combinations make it substantially better? |
Choose two or three rather than automatically selecting the safest idea. Make one into a thumbnail, color study, paragraph of intent, or small test. A creative idea becomes useful when it encounters the physical realities of paint, surface, light, time, and revision.

Build creativity through deliberate painting practice
Creative work is not a matter of waiting for a rare internal state. It depends on creative cognition plus relevant skills and knowledge. The OECD framework identifies resources such as domain knowledge and experience, cognitive skills, openness, motivation, self-belief, and collaboration as contributors to creative thinking.
A useful practice loop is:
- Choose a recurring problem. For example, flat compositions, predictable color, stiff figures, weak edges, or paintings that lack emotional focus.
- Study strong examples. Identify the decisions behind them rather than copying their visible style.
- Generate alternatives. Make several compositions, value structures, palettes, or mark-making systems before committing.
- Make a concrete output. Finish a small study or deliberately limited painting.
- Get informed feedback. Ask a teacher, peer, curator, designer, or experienced painter to respond to the relevant problem.
- Compare intention with result. What did you want viewers to notice or feel? What actually happens?
- Revise. Change the structure, not merely add detail.
- Repeat with slightly greater difficulty. Reduce time, change the surface, limit the palette, or work from a more complex subject.
This is deliberate practice: repeated work aimed at a specific weakness, followed by feedback and adjustment. It is more useful than simply producing many paintings while repeating the same decisions.
A 2024 meta-analysis of 169 creativity-training studies found an unadjusted average effect of 0.53 standard deviations. After correcting for publication bias, the estimated effect was approximately 0.29 to 0.32 standard deviations. That supports the idea that creative-thinking performance can improve, but it does not justify promising dramatic transformation or assuming that a short exercise will produce major artistic achievement. Improvements may be task-specific, domain-sensitive, or temporary; transfer to completed paintings and professional success is less certain.
Learn more—but use knowledge actively
Knowledge gives you material to recombine. It helps you recognize meaningful problems, understand what is technically feasible, and make deliberate departures from convention. A painter who understands perspective, value, anatomy, color interaction, materials, art history, and visual storytelling has more options than someone trying to invent without a foundation.
More information is not automatically more creativity. Habitual knowledge can also create fixation: you may keep solving a problem in the way you have seen it solved before. The remedy is not random consumption. It is active comparison.
Try this three-source exercise:
- Study one strong painting in the problem’s direct domain.
- Study one example from a neighboring domain such as film lighting, sculpture, fashion, illustration, theater, or architecture.
- Study one example from a distant domain such as music, gardening, maps, dance, or engineering.
- Write down the mechanism each uses: repetition, interruption, compression, contrast, layering, asymmetry, concealment, rhythm, or another structural principle.
- Apply one mechanism to a small painting without copying the source’s appearance.
Cross-domain exposure works best when you compare structures and apply them. Reading widely or saving inspirational images without making anything rarely changes your creative output.
Use constraints to make the problem more fertile
Unlimited choice can produce hesitation and familiar solutions. A constraint reduces the search space and gives you something to push against. A 2022 meta-analysis of 111 studies found a significant positive relationship between constraints and creative performance.
The important word is moderate. A meaningful limitation can focus attention; an unclear, excessive, or punitive limitation can stop experimentation.
Painting constraints to try include:
- Use only three colors plus white.
- Finish the study in 20 minutes.
- Use only materials already in the studio.
- Paint the same subject from three radically different distances.
- Use one familiar element and one unexpected element.
- Design for a viewer who cannot see fine detail.
- Use no recognizable human figure.
- Make the focal point the least saturated area.
- Paint without blending.
- Use a small surface for an expansive subject.
- Make three solutions that differ in mechanism, not just appearance.
After each constraint, ask what it revealed. If the result is merely a technical stunt, change the constraint so it serves an artistic question.
Change perspective when your ideas become repetitive
Repetition usually means your current search strategy is narrow, not that you have run out of creativity. Force a change in viewpoint:
- How would a beginner approach this?
- How would a master solve it with half the materials?
- What would a child notice first?
- How would the subject look to someone who strongly disagrees with me?
- What would a competitor or visual artist from another culture do?
- How would I paint it with no budget, no reference photo, or no recognizable object?
- What if the viewer wanted the opposite emotional outcome?
- What assumption am I treating as unavoidable?
For a painting series, assign each perspective a separate thumbnail category. Count genuinely different approaches, not 12 versions with the same composition and a different background.
Walking and physical activity: useful for generating, not magic
Walking is one of the better-supported immediate tactics for divergent ideation. In a Stanford study involving four experiments, walking increased creative ideation during the walk and shortly afterward. In one alternate-uses comparison, 81% of participants performed better while walking. The effects were weaker and less consistent on a convergent remote-associates task. Outdoor walking also produced especially novel and high-quality analogies, although the researchers separated walking from outdoor stimulation in their experiments.
A separate systematic review and multilevel meta-analysis found evidence that both acute and longer-term physical activity can benefit creative ideation, while noting the variety of study designs and the need for more rigorous randomized research.

For painting, try a 10- to 20-minute walk while carrying a small notebook or using a voice recorder. Ask yourself questions such as:
- What is the strongest shape I have seen on this walk?
- Where is the unexpected color relationship?
- How could this street, shadow, or gesture become a composition?
- What visual rhythm is repeating around me?
Walking is more likely to help you generate possibilities than edit a finished painting, calculate a complex perspective construction, or choose between two nearly completed color corrections. Do not read or record while crossing roads; collect ideas safely.
Take the right kind of break
Incubation can help when you have already spent focused time with a problem. A 2012 study found that an undemanding task that allowed more mind-wandering improved performance on previously encountered creative problems compared with a demanding task, rest, or no break.
The newer evidence is more nuanced. A preregistered 2025 writing study found no significant differences between several incubation tasks. However, greater mind-wandering during a break predicted more improvement on a repeated writing prompt when creativity was measured using semantic distance. That relationship did not appear for a new prompt and was not consistently found in human creativity ratings.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →So a break is not a guaranteed creativity switch. The best candidate is a low-demand, non-screen activity that allows your mind to wander while keeping the problem loosely active:
- walking;
- showering;
- washing dishes;
- gentle stretching;
- folding laundry;
- looking out a window;
- sitting quietly without a high-stimulation device.
Work on the painting first, take the break, and record ideas immediately afterward. Scrolling, multitasking, and consuming more visual content may distract you rather than incubate the problem.
Protect sleep instead of romanticizing exhaustion
Do not use sleep deprivation as a creativity technique. Adults aged 18 to 60 generally need at least seven hours of sleep, according to CDC guidance, and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society recommend seven or more hours for healthy adults.
A 2024 systematic review found that sleep deprivation tends to impair creative thinking, particularly divergent thinking. The authors also emphasized that the available studies were few, heterogeneous, often underpowered, and generally of fair-to-poor quality. That uncertainty is not evidence in favor of all-nighters; the health and cognitive costs are much clearer.
Some laboratory research suggests that sleep can help creative problem-solving for material encountered before sleep. In one experiment, REM sleep improved creative problem-solving for previously primed problems, while time passing also contributed to some incubation effects. A small 2023 experiment with 49 healthy adults used targeted cues during sleep onset and reported higher subsequent creativity scores in sleep groups, but it does not establish a reliable consumer nap routine or device-based formula. Read the sleep-onset study.
For a painting problem, use a simple and safe sleep protocol:
- Work on the problem briefly before bed.
- Write the exact question, your intention, and the partial ideas you have.
- Stop forcing a solution.
- Sleep normally.
- Record ideas immediately upon waking.
- Test the morning idea later instead of assuming it is automatically good.
Mood, attention, and meditation
Positive mood can help exploration, but forced happiness is not the answer
A meta-analysis covering 102 effect sizes found that positive moods produced more creativity than mood-neutral controls, with a small average association of approximately r = .15. It did not find a significant difference between negative and neutral moods or between positive and negative moods.
This suggests that a mild positive state may broaden exploration, not that painters must feel cheerful to make worthwhile work. Anxiety, grief, anger, depression, and stress should not be romanticized as sources of creativity. Negative emotion may sometimes support persistence or critical attention, but it is not a dependable creativity enhancer.

Meditation may help, depending on the task and practice
A 2023 meta-analysis of mindfulness interventions found an overall improvement in creative performance. In control-group studies, the effect was larger for convergent-thinking tasks (d = .47) than divergent-thinking tasks (d = .25). Results varied with intervention length and the kind of control group used.
Different attentional practices may suit different stages:
- Open monitoring: notice thoughts, sensations, and images without holding attention on one object. This may be useful before exploratory ideation.
- Focused attention: repeatedly return attention to one object. This may be more relevant before concentrating on editing, selection, or detailed execution.
A small study examined these as different attentional modes and found open monitoring beneficial for divergent thinking, but the wider literature is heterogeneous. Do not treat one meditation style as a universal prescription. If meditation causes rumination, frustration, or sleepiness, use a walk or quiet break instead.

Brainstorming: why painters should often work alone first
Unstructured group brainstorming is not automatically more creative than individual work. Live discussion can create:
- Production blocking: you cannot speak while someone else is speaking, so ideas disappear or remain unexpressed.
- Evaluation apprehension: people avoid strange ideas because they fear judgment.
- Anchoring: the first suggestion defines the direction for everyone else.
- Social loafing: some participants contribute less because responsibility is shared.
- Premature convergence: the group starts defending or improving the first acceptable idea before exploring alternatives.
Research on collaborative creativity also indicates that groups can struggle to select the most novel ideas, with expertise and elaboration affecting outcomes.
A better format for a painting critique or project
- Define the visual problem and decision criteria together.
- Give everyone five to ten minutes of silent individual ideation.
- Share thumbnails or notes without interruption, preferably anonymously at first.
- Cluster similar ideas without ranking them.
- Ask the group to combine, extend, or challenge the options.
- Evaluate only after the idea pool is large enough.
- Use explicit criteria such as mood, composition, audience, feasibility, and potential.
For a remote group, a shared document can reduce turn-taking bottlenecks, but no tool replaces a clear brief, psychological safety, or skilled facilitation. Evidence on electronic brainstorming varies with group size, medium, and outcome measure; the technology is not a guarantee of better ideas.

Motivation and creative confidence
Motivation matters because creativity requires sustained attention, experimentation, and tolerance for failure. Meta-analytic work links intrinsic motivation with creativity, and the OECD framework identifies autonomy, task motivation, self-belief, and supportive environments as relevant resources. The relationship is more nuanced than the slogan that external rewards always destroy creativity.
In a studio or classroom:
- Give yourself meaningful choice over the approach.
- Explain why the painting problem matters.
- Reward exploration and learning, not only a successful finished result.
- Use deadlines as structure rather than threat.
- Give feedback about decisions and effects, not personal talent.
- Protect early ideation from public embarrassment.
Creative self-efficacy—the belief that you can produce creative work—is related to creativity but is not the same as ability. A meta-analysis of 41 papers and 17,226 participants found an overall correlation of approximately r = .39 between creative self-efficacy and creativity measures. The relationship was stronger for self-rated creativity and weaker for divergent-thinking performance tests.
Build useful confidence by completing small projects, receiving specific feedback, and keeping evidence of improvement. Confidence without feedback can become overconfidence; repeated, observable progress is a better foundation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use AI without making your paintings more generic
Generative AI is a useful current edge case because it can help with some forms of ideation while reducing diversity. In a 2024 experiment, access to AI-generated story ideas increased individual story creativity ratings but reduced the diversity of the overall story pool. A 2025 Nature Human Behaviour study similarly reported higher average idea creativity with ChatGPT than with web search or unaided intuition, alongside lower diversity across ideas.

The lesson for painters is not that AI universally improves or harms creativity. Its effect depends on the task, the amount of assistance, your expertise, and whether you value the quality of one idea or the distinctiveness of an entire series.
When originality matters, generate your own thumbnails first. Then use AI as a critic, contrast generator, or source of questions:

Match the method to the problem
| Your problem | Likely cause | Try first |
|---|---|---|
| I have no ideas. | The question is vague, you are tired, or you are judging too early. | Narrow the prompt, add a meaningful constraint, set a 15-idea quota, then walk. |
| My ideas are repetitive. | Your search strategy is fixed. | Use category quotas, perspective shifts, analogies, and reverse assumptions. |
| I have many ideas but none are useful. | The problem is poorly framed, your criteria are unclear, or you lack domain knowledge. | Define the viewer or purpose, score ideas for fit and feasibility, and make a small test. |
| I start but do not finish. | You may be avoiding evaluation, feedback, or the technical difficulty of execution. | Work in small studies, set a finish line, obtain informed feedback, and revise. |
| I am exhausted. | Reduced inhibition is being mistaken for creativity. | Sleep, eat, hydrate, take a short walk, and postpone final judgment until rested. |
| My group chooses safe ideas. | Anchoring, hierarchy, fear of judgment, or premature evaluation. | Use silent individual brainwriting, anonymous sharing, and explicit criteria. |
| I cannot focus on editing. | Attention is depleted or the task is too open-ended. | Use focused attention, a short timed session, and one specific revision question. |
If you have ADHD, anxiety, depression, insomnia, or another condition, avoid claims that a diagnosis automatically makes someone more creative or that symptoms should be preserved for art. Non-clinical adjustments such as short timed sessions, externalizing ideas, reducing distractions, and movement breaks may help. Persistent problems with attention, sleep, mood, or anxiety deserve professional support.

Week 1: Build fluency
Spend 10 minutes each day on one defined prompt. Generate at least 15 ideas without evaluating them. Use thumbnails, written descriptions, or both.
Track:
- number of ideas;
- number of distinct categories;
- which ideas still interest you after a delay.
Week 2: Build flexibility
Use the same artistic problem from different perspectives: beginner, expert, child, competitor, person with a disability, person with no budget, viewer from another culture, and viewer seeking the opposite emotional effect.
Measure genuinely different approaches rather than different wording or surface decoration.
Week 3: Work with constraints and combinations
Change one constraint each day: time, budget, materials, audience, format, scale, accessibility, reversibility, or palette. Combine two unrelated ideas and explain the visual or conceptual mechanism connecting them.

What does not reliably increase creativity
- Waiting for inspiration: a prompt, quota, and small study create useful conditions more reliably than waiting for a mood.
- All-nighters: anecdotes about artists working through the night do not outweigh experimental evidence that sleep deprivation tends to impair creative thinking.
- Unlimited brainstorming: more time can produce more repetitions unless you change the category, perspective, or constraint.
- Generic instructions: be creative is less useful than a clear problem with a meaningful target.
- Randomness by itself: a bizarre image is not automatically an effective or meaningful painting.
- Endless inspirational content: consuming more images without analyzing or applying their underlying mechanisms can increase comparison without increasing skill.
- Copying popular ideas: imitation can teach technique, but it does not by itself develop an independent visual problem or point of view.
- Supplements, drugs, or psychedelics: do not use them as creativity recommendations. An adult creativity-enhancement meta-analysis found cognitive-manipulation drugs to be the least effective category in its dataset and statistically non-effective, with g = .10. The broader review also found high variation between methods and studies.
- A personality label or diagnosis: no temperament guarantees creative output, and no diagnosis disqualifies you from it.
How to know whether you are actually becoming more creative
Do not measure progress only by how inspired you feel or how many ideas you can list. Use several measures:
- Fluency: How many distinct options can you generate in 10 minutes?
- Flexibility: How many categories or mechanisms do those options represent?
- Originality: Which ideas depart from your usual solutions?
- Usefulness: Which ideas solve the visual or expressive problem?
- Execution: How often do ideas become finished studies or paintings?
- Revision: How much does feedback improve the work?
- Range: Can you work creatively under different materials, subjects, scales, and time limits?
Keep dated thumbnails and finished studies. Revisit them after a week or month and mark which ideas still have potential. This reveals progress more accurately than relying on your immediate emotional reaction.
How strong is the evidence for common creativity advice?
| Method | Best-supported use | Evidence and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Deliberate creativity training | Improving performance on creative-thinking tasks over time. | Moderate support, with publication-bias concerns and uncertain transfer to major real-world output. |
| Walking or light physical activity | Immediate divergent ideation. | Positive experiments and meta-analytic support; less reliable for convergent or highly technical work. |
| Low-demand incubation | Returning to a problem already considered. | Positive but mixed and task-specific; mind-wandering is not guaranteed. |
| Normal sleep | Preserving cognition and supporting some insight processes. | Strong health rationale and suggestive creativity findings; no precise creative sleep formula. |
| Sleep deprivation | Not recommended. | Evidence tends toward impairment, despite weak and inconsistent older findings. |
| Positive mood | Exploratory ideation. | Small average advantage over neutral mood; not a reason to force happiness. |
| Mindfulness | Some divergent and convergent tasks, depending on practice. | Small-to-moderate task-dependent effects; intervention type and design matter. |
| Moderate constraints | Focusing an open-ended problem. | Meta-analytic support; excessive or unclear constraints can inhibit. |
| Structured brainstorming | Generating and developing ideas in groups. | Individual-first formats avoid several group process losses; live discussion is not automatically superior. |
| AI assistance | Stimulus, critique, and potentially higher individual idea ratings. | Can reduce diversity and increase sameness across a group of ideas. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can anyone become more creative, or is creativity innate?
Creativity is not a fixed, all-or-nothing trait. Training can improve creative-thinking performance, but the gains vary by task and domain, and improved test performance does not guarantee major artistic achievement. Painting knowledge, practice, motivation, feedback, opportunity, and persistence all matter.

What should I do when I have no painting ideas?
Define a specific visual problem, impose one meaningful constraint, generate 15 to 20 possibilities without judging them, change perspective or use an analogy, then take a 10- to 20-minute low-demand walk. Return to evaluate only after you have expanded the options.
Does walking really make you more creative?
Walking appears particularly useful for divergent idea generation. A Stanford study found improved creative ideation during and shortly after walking, but effects differed by task and were weaker for convergent problem-solving. It is a useful experiment, not a universal creativity percentage or guarantee.
Should I use AI to come up with painting ideas?
Use AI after making some independent thumbnails when originality and diversity matter. Ask it to identify assumptions, propose different mechanisms, expose clichés, or suggest tests. AI may raise the rating of an individual idea while making a larger pool of ideas more alike.
Is it better to paint when I feel unhappy or exhausted?
No reliable evidence supports suffering or sleep deprivation as a creativity strategy. A workable emotional state may help exploration, but protect normal sleep and postpone final judgment when exhausted. Persistent mood, attention, or sleep problems deserve professional support.
The Bottom Line
The most dependable way to increase creativity is to practice the entire cycle: define a worthwhile painting problem, generate many varied possibilities, use constraints and unfamiliar perspectives, protect sleep and attention, then select, test, revise, and repeat. Walk or take a low-demand break when you need new associations; learn deeply enough to have useful material to recombine; and use AI or group discussion to challenge your thinking rather than replace it. More unusual ideas are only the beginning—creative painting requires ideas that become meaningful, effective work.
