Install an entryway wallpaper mural by first identifying whether it is peel-and-stick or paste-the-wall, then preparing a clean, flat, dry surface. Mark a true vertical guide for the first panel, apply panels gradually while matching the image, and trim the edges only after each section is positioned. The mural maker’s instructions control adhesive, seam, overlap, panel order, and paint compatibility, so do not substitute directions from a different product.

“Wallpaper mural” describes the printed image, not one universal installation method. A peel-and-stick mural has pressure-sensitive adhesive on its backing. A paste-the-wall mural requires wallpaper paste applied by the method specified for that product. Some pasted wallpapers instead direct you to paste the paper. Those instructions are not interchangeable.
Read the installation sheet supplied with your mural and compare it with the maker’s current online instructions. WallpaperMural’s installation instructions distinguish its removable peel-and-stick product from other constructions. Mural Wonder’s guide explains that paste-the-wall products need the appropriate wallpaper paste, while The Home Depot’s pasted-wallpaper guide notes that manufacturers differ on whether paste goes on the wall or the paper.

Before installation, verify the mural’s panel order, finished width and height, seam style, substrate, and any edge allowance. The title alone does not establish your wall dimensions, paint finish, panel count, or whether joins should touch or overlap.
Prepare the entryway wall and work area
Check the wall surface
- Clean: Remove dust, grease, wax, cobwebs, and loose paint. An entryway often collects grit around doors and baseboards, so pay particular attention to those areas.
- Flat: Fill holes, sand ridges, remove flaking material, and flatten obvious texture. A mural follows the wall beneath it; bumps can telegraph through the print or prevent consistent contact.
- Dry: Do not apply over damp plaster, condensation, or a recently washed surface. Moisture can interfere with adhesion and create bubbles.
- Compatible: Confirm that the mural maker permits your paint finish, primer, and wall coating. Stain-blocking and water-repellent paints, and some wallpaper primers, can prevent a peel-and-stick backing from bonding.
For the specific removable peel-and-stick mural covered by WallpaperMural’s instructions, the maker says to wait four weeks after fresh painting before application. That is a product instruction, not a universal curing period for every paint or mural. Confirm the requirement for your own product at WallpaperMural’s instructions page.

Measure the wall in several places because corners and ceilings are rarely perfectly square. Compare those measurements with the mural’s supplied dimensions and panel diagram. WallpaperMural states that its mural includes an extra 6 cm total—3 cm on every edge—for trimming; check that your particular order has the same allowance before relying on it.

Clear and protect the entryway
- Move coats, shoe racks, mirrors, and furniture away from the wall.
- Protect the floor and adjacent trim with a drop cloth or clean paper.
- Keep doors from swinging into a freshly positioned panel.
- Have bright, even lighting available so you can see bubbles, edge drift, and pattern alignment.
Gather the right tools
- A pencil and straightedge or level for the vertical guide.
- A wallpaper smoothing tool, spatula, or squeegee appropriate to the mural’s surface.
- A sharp utility knife with spare blades and a trim guide or broad wallpaper spatula.
- A tape measure, clean soft cloth, and the adhesive specified by the maker if the mural is not self-adhesive.
WallpaperMural recommends installing with two people unless you are experienced and confident; the large flexible panels are easier to support and align with a second person.
Plan the panel layout before sticking anything
Unroll or lay out the mural panels in a clean area without creasing them. Locate the printed panel numbers or installation diagram and identify which edge starts at the chosen side of the entryway. Do not assume every mural is installed from the same direction. Photowall’s peel-and-stick instructions, for example, specify left-to-right, edge-to-edge installation for the applicable product; follow that guide only when it matches your mural. Its PDF is available at Photowall’s peel-and-stick installation instructions.
Dry-position the first panel against the wall to check that the image begins where you expect. Decide how the mural will meet inside corners, outside corners, ceiling lines, baseboards, door casings, and switches. A centered subject may require a different starting point than the panel numbering suggests, but do not reorder panels unless the maker’s layout allows it.

Apply a peel-and-stick mural step by step
- Mark a vertical control line. Measure the width of the first panel and place a pencil line where its intended edge should land. Use a level or plumb straightedge; a wall corner is not reliable evidence of vertical. This line determines whether every later panel remains straight.
- Position the dry panel. With a helper supporting the panel, hold it beside the guide and confirm the top, bottom, and image orientation. Keep the adhesive backing protected until the position is correct.
- Expose only a short strip. Peel back a small section of release liner at the top. Do not remove the full backing at once; a short exposed area lets you correct alignment before most of the adhesive contacts the wall.
- Set the first edge on the guide. Tack the exposed section beside the pencil line without stretching the material. Check the panel’s top edge and the image before proceeding.
- Smooth from the attached area outward. Use the smoothing tool with controlled strokes, working from the center or attached edge toward the sides to press out air. Keep the panel supported so its weight does not pull the top out of alignment.
- Reveal more backing gradually. Continue peeling the liner in manageable sections while smoothing each newly exposed area. If the product permits repositioning, lift slowly and reset rather than dragging the adhesive across the wall.
- Inspect the full panel. Look for bubbles, wrinkles, lifted corners, or a drifting vertical edge before installing the next panel. Correct defects while the panel can still be handled according to the maker’s instructions.
- Fit the next numbered panel. Bring its image edge to the previous panel and match the printed design. Whether the join is edge-to-edge or overlapped is product-specific; use the seam direction supplied with the mural.
- Repeat across the wall. Recheck the image at every join and periodically verify that the overall run has not wandered from the planned layout.
- Trim only after placement. Once the panels are positioned and the adhesive has made proper contact, place a trim guide or broad spatula at the ceiling, baseboard, casing, and corner. Cut with a sharp knife in a controlled pass, replacing the blade when it starts to drag.
The sequence above follows the approach described in WallpaperMural’s self-adhesive mural guide, which calls for a vertical pencil line, progressive backing removal, visual panel matching, and sharp-knife trimming. Use your own maker’s seam and repositioning rules if they differ.
Install a paste-the-wall mural without mixing methods
Paste-the-wall installation is controlled by the mural’s adhesive specification. Confirm the paste type, dilution or preparation, open time, booking requirements, and whether the maker wants adhesive on the wall only. Never add paste to a self-adhesive panel unless its instructions explicitly require it.
- Mark the same vertical guide. Establish the first panel’s edge with a level and pencil before spreading adhesive.
- Prepare the specified paste. Mix or open only the product named in the mural instructions. Observe its usable working time and keep the paste clean.
- Apply paste where directed. Some systems are paste-the-wall; others require paste on the paper. The distinction is essential because excess adhesive can swell, stain, or distort a panel.
- Cover the working area evenly. Use the recommended roller or brush and avoid thick ridges, dry gaps, and splashes on the printed face.
- Position the first panel at the guide. Align the top and vertical edge, then smooth according to the paper’s handling instructions. Do not pull hard enough to stretch the print.
- Manage the next panel’s open time. Apply paste to only as much wall or paper as you can place while it remains workable. Keep panel order visible so the mural image stays continuous.
- Join panels as specified. Bring edges together or create the stated overlap; do not invent a seam width. Wipe paste from the face with the approved method before it dries.
- Trim after the mural is positioned. Use a sharp knife and trim guide around openings and perimeter edges, changing blades when cuts begin to tear.
For a general overview of pasted wallpaper handling, see The Home Depot guide. Its advice is general; the mural manufacturer’s sheet remains the authority for your specific paper.

Make seams, corners, and edges look intentional
Panel seams
Match the image at eye level first, then check the full height of the join. A seam can appear aligned at the top while drifting lower down if the first panel was not plumb. Avoid forcing a pattern by stretching the material; correct the panel position using the method allowed by the product.
Inside and outside corners
Do not assume a full-width panel should simply be wrapped around a corner. Measure the return, check whether the mural permits an overlap, and keep the image transition in mind. A pronounced wall out-of-square condition may require a planned cut rather than forcing the panel to follow both faces.
Doors, trim, and switches
Apply the panel across an opening, press it lightly into the recess, and trim with a sharp blade only when the material is stable. Turn off power before removing switch or outlet covers, and leave enough material to trim cleanly behind the cover plates. Keep adhesive or paste out of electrical boxes.

Ceiling and baseboard cuts
Use the trim guide to hold a straight edge while cutting. Several light, controlled passes are safer than one forceful cut that can score the wall or tear the mural. Remove the waste strip promptly so it does not adhere elsewhere.
Troubleshoot problems before they become permanent
| Symptom | Likely cause | Response |
|---|---|---|
| First panel slopes | The starting edge followed an out-of-plumb corner. | Stop before adding panels. Recheck the guide and reset the panel only as far as the product permits. |
| Repeating image does not meet | Panel order, seam type, or edge alignment is wrong. | Verify the numbered sequence and the maker’s edge-to-edge or overlap direction; do not trim a seam until the image matches. |
| Bubbles remain | Air was trapped during smoothing, or the wall is uneven. | Work toward the nearest open edge with the approved smoothing tool. Do not puncture or cut unless the manufacturer expressly permits it. |
| Edges lift | Dust, incompatible paint, moisture, or insufficient pressure. | Check the wall condition and product compatibility. Press and hold only if the instructions allow correction; otherwise contact the maker before adding adhesive. |
| Paper tears during trimming | A dull blade or unsupported cut. | Install a fresh blade and use a rigid trim guide. Avoid sawing motions. |
| Paste shows on the printed face | Too much adhesive or unsuitable cleanup. | Follow the mural’s cleaning directions immediately; rubbing or excess water can damage some finishes. |
Choose between mural installation methods using evidence, not assumptions
| Decision point | Peel-and-stick mural | Paste-based mural |
|---|---|---|
| Adhesive | Self-adhesive backing; do not add paste unless the maker says to. | Requires the specified wallpaper paste and application location. |
| Wall compatibility | Paint finish, primer, cleanliness, and cure time can determine adhesion. | Wall preparation and paste compatibility determine bonding and drying. |
| Panel handling | Expose backing gradually and follow the product’s repositioning limits. | Control paste coverage and working time; handling rules vary by paper. |
| Seam treatment | May be edge-to-edge or another maker-specified join. | May be butt-joined or overlapped as directed. |
| Finishing tools | Smoothing tool and sharp knife are central to placement and trimming. | Smoothing tool, paste tools, clean cloth, and sharp knife are typically needed. |
The available manufacturer instructions establish that methods differ, but they do not prove a universal winner for ease, durability, removability, cost, or installation speed. Choose the construction whose wall requirements and seam directions fit your entryway, then follow that product’s sheet exactly.
Final inspection before you put the entryway back into service
- Walk back several feet and inspect the mural in the entryway’s normal lighting.
- Check every seam at eye level and near the floor for image drift or lifting.
- Confirm that corners, door casings, baseboards, and switch plates have clean, secure cuts.
- Remove adhesive liner, paste residue, and trimmed waste without scraping the wall.
- Leave the mural undisturbed for the period stated by its manufacturer before washing the surface or replacing furniture.
No authoritative source establishes a universal installation time, cost, failure rate, or success rate for entryway murals. Your result depends on the mural construction, wall condition, dimensions, panel layout, and adherence to the maker’s instructions.
