Ubuntu 24.04 LTS offers two sensible ways to install GIMP: the integrated Ubuntu package, which currently provides the GIMP 2.10.36 line, and the official Flathub Flatpak, which follows the current GIMP 3.x releases. Choose apt for the simplest Ubuntu-native setup; choose Flatpak if you specifically want GIMP 3.x. This guide covers installation, version checks, a safe editing workflow, exports, plug-ins, and recovery from common problems.

|---|---|---|---|---|
apt |
GIMP 2.10.36 (the Noble revision currently listed is 2.10.36-3ubuntu0.24.04.1) |
Simple installation, Ubuntu integration and familiar system updates | Older major release than upstream GIMP 3.x | Beginners, stability-focused users and existing 2.10 plug-in workflows |
| Official Flathub Flatpak | Current GIMP 3.x line; GIMP lists 3.2.4, released April 17, 2026 | New features, independent release cadence and contained dependencies | More disk use and possible sandbox file or plug-in permissions | Users who want current GIMP |
| AppImage | Current upstream build where supported | Portable and independent of package installation | Manual updates and integration; GIMP lists Debian 13 or newer as its baseline | Advanced users managing standalone binaries |
| Third-party PPA | Depends on its maintainer | May offer a newer native package | Trust, maintenance, dependency and upgrade risks | Only for a specific, well-understood need |
Ubuntu’s package search confirms the Noble package version: packages.ubuntu.com. GIMP’s current release and distribution links are on its official downloads page.

lsb_release -ds
command -v gimp
gimp --version
flatpak list | grep -i gimp
Installing both methods can create duplicate application-menu entries and can make the gimp command launch a different version from the one you expected.
Install GIMP with Ubuntu’s apt package
- Refresh package metadata and install GIMP:
sudo apt update sudo apt install gimp - Launch it from the Applications menu or run:
gimp - Confirm the running native version:
gimp --versionOn a current Ubuntu 24.04 repository this should report a 2.10.36 build; the Debian revision can change with Ubuntu updates.
Update or remove the native package
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
To update only GIMP, use sudo apt install --only-upgrade gimp. Remove the program with sudo apt remove gimp; remove unused dependencies afterward with sudo apt autoremove. sudo apt purge gimp also removes package-managed configuration, but it does not automatically delete your personal GIMP profile or image files.
Install current GIMP 3.x with Flatpak
Install Flatpak support
sudo apt update
sudo apt install flatpak
GNOME users may optionally add graphical Software integration:

Install the official Flathub build
Use the installation method published by GIMP:
flatpak install --user https://flathub.org/repo/appstream/org.gimp.GIMP.flatpakref
The application ID is org.gimp.GIMP. If the reference method fails, add Flathub and install by ID:
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub
https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install --user flathub org.gimp.GIMP
Launch, update or remove Flatpak GIMP
flatpak run org.gimp.GIMP//stable
This launch syntax is documented in the GIMP 3.2 manual. You can also launch GIMP from the Applications menu.
flatpak update org.gimp.GIMP
flatpak update
Update only GIMP or all Flatpak applications. Remove it with:

flatpak uninstall org.gimp.GIMP
flatpak uninstall --unused
Verify which version is running
For the native package:
gimp --version
For Flatpak:
flatpak run org.gimp.GIMP//stable --version
If both are installed, use the explicit Flatpak command when you need GIMP 3.x, or remove the installation you do not want.
Understand the GIMP workspace
GIMP’s layout varies slightly between 2.10 and 3.x and between desktop themes. The main areas are:
- Toolbox: selection, transform, paint, text and related tools.
- Tool Options: settings for the selected tool.
- Canvas: the image you are editing.
- Layers dialog: layer order, visibility, opacity and blend modes.
- Menus: File, Edit, Select, View, Image, Layer, Colors, Tools, Filters, Windows and Help, with wording that can differ by release.
- Status bar: zoom and image information.
The GIMP 3.2 manual documents docks, dialogs, layers, menus and keyboard shortcuts. Use the Windows menu to adjust docks or enable a single-window layout where available.
A safe beginner workflow
Open or create an image
- Open an existing file with File → Open, or from a terminal with
gimp /path/to/image.jpg. - Create a canvas with File → New, then set dimensions and optional advanced settings such as resolution or fill.
With Flatpak, a file on an unusual mount or network location may be hidden by sandbox permissions. Opening it through File → Open is the first thing to try.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Work with layers
A layer is an independently editable component. The top layer normally appears above lower layers; the eye icon controls visibility, and opacity and blend mode affect the composite. Add an alpha channel when you need transparency. Before painting or transforming, check that the intended layer is active, visible and unlocked; editing the wrong layer is a common beginner mistake.

Crop and resize
- Select the Crop tool and drag the area to keep; confirm the crop.
- For dimensions, choose Image → Scale Image.
- Keep the aspect-ratio link enabled unless deliberate distortion is wanted.
- Export a copy instead of destroying the only original.
Rotate or flip
Choose the Rotate or Flip tool and verify whether its transform target is the layer, selection or entire image before applying it.
Remove a simple background
- Add an alpha channel if the layer does not already support transparency.
- Select the background with an appropriate selection tool and refine the boundary.
- Delete the selected area.
- Export as PNG to preserve transparency.
Complex hair, shadows and translucent objects generally require more detailed masking; there is no guaranteed one-click result.
Add text
- Choose the Text tool and click the canvas.
- Type your text.
- Set font, size, color and alignment in Tool Options.
- Keep the text on its own layer so it remains editable.
Undo deliberately
Ctrl+Z commonly undoes and Ctrl+Y redoes on Linux, although shortcuts can be customized. The Undo History dialog is useful when reversing several operations.
Save the editable project, then export a finished image
Save an XCF master
Use File → Save or File → Save As and retain a file such as project-name.xcf. XCF preserves layers and other editable GIMP data. Keep it as your working master and do not overwrite the only original photograph.
Export for delivery
Choose File → Export As, select a format, configure its options and click Export. The manual distinguishes saving a project from exporting an image; see its menu reference.
| Format | Use it for | Important behavior |
|---|---|---|
| XCF | Future editing in GIMP | Preserves layers and project data; not a general delivery format |
| PNG | Transparency, screenshots, logos and graphics | Lossless and supports an alpha channel |
| JPEG | Photographs and small web files | Lossy; does not preserve transparency and is unsuitable as a repeated-editing master |
| WebP | Web delivery when the destination supports it | Choose quality and transparency options appropriate to the site |
| TIFF | Some print or archival workflows | Confirm that the receiving workflow supports the features you used |
Flatpak file access and plug-ins
Resolve sandbox access problems
Symptoms can include missing files on external drives, inconsistent file-manager “Open With” behavior, or plug-ins that cannot read and write their expected folders.
- Try opening the file through File → Open.
- Copy a test image into your home directory and retry.
- Confirm the per-user Flatpak installation with
flatpak list. - Inspect details and permissions:
flatpak info org.gimp.GIMP flatpak permission-show org.gimp.GIMP - If necessary, use Flatseal or targeted Flatpak permission commands. Granting broad filesystem access reduces sandbox isolation, so do not start with unrestricted access.
Check plug-in compatibility
GIMP 2.10 plug-ins and scripts may not work unchanged in GIMP 3.x, with Python plug-ins a particular migration concern. A plug-in installed for one version may also be invisible to another because native, Flatpak and AppImage builds can use different locations and permissions. Install extensions only from sources you trust, keep an inventory before switching versions and back up your profile before migration. If an extension causes startup trouble, test with a clean profile rather than copying an entire old profile into a new major release.

For GIMP 3.2, the usual Linux configuration directory is $HOME/.config/GIMP/3.2/. After checking the installed version, back it up by renaming it:
gimp --version
mv ~/.config/GIMP/3.2 ~/.config/GIMP/3.2.backup
Restart GIMP and it will create a fresh profile. GIMP 2.10 uses a different directory, so do not rename only the 3.2 path when the native package is installed.

“Unable to locate package gimp”
sudo apt update
sudo apt install gimp
lsb_release -a
apt policy gimp
If the package is still unavailable, verify that the system is Ubuntu 24.04 and that the Universe repository is enabled. Do not add a random PPA as a first response.
The wrong version launches
Compare gimp --version with flatpak run org.gimp.GIMP//stable --version. Duplicate installations explain many apparent version mismatches; remove the unwanted one or use the explicit command.
Flatpak is unavailable or missing from the menu
Install Flatpak with sudo apt update && sudo apt install flatpak. If the application does not appear, launch flatpak run org.gimp.GIMP//stable; after a successful launch, logging out and in can refresh the desktop menu.

Tools appear to do nothing
- Confirm the correct layer or drawable is active and visible.
- Check for an active selection restricting edits.
- Unlock the layer and ensure you are not painting on a layer group.
- Check brush opacity and size.
- Use an RGB image mode when a tool requires it rather than indexed color.
Transparency disappeared on export
JPEG cannot store transparency. Export as PNG or another format with alpha support, and verify that the intended layers are visible and that you exported the image rather than only a selection or active layer.
Panels or the layout are broken
Use Windows-menu options to restore docks or single-window mode. If that fails, back up and reset the user profile as described above instead of deleting it without a recovery copy.
AppImage, PPAs and download safety
GIMP lists an AppImage, but its downloads page identifies Debian 13 or newer as the supported baseline; Ubuntu 24.04 is based on an older Debian generation, so AppImage is not the safest default here. If you deliberately use it, match the architecture, make the downloaded file executable and verify the SHA-256 checksum published on the official page:
chmod +x GIMP-3.2.4-x86_64.AppImage
./GIMP-3.2.4-x86_64.AppImage
Replace the filename with the file you actually downloaded. Prefer Ubuntu repositories, GIMP’s official downloads page and its linked Flathub listing. Avoid repacked installers, unofficial download sites, unmaintained PPAs and plug-ins from unknown portals.
What GIMP can and cannot replace
GIMP is free, open-source software for photo retouching, painting, image composition, batch processing, rendering and format conversion. It handles cropping, resizing, layers, background removal, text, illustration, web preparation, plug-ins and scripted workflows. It can import some Photoshop files, but preservation of every effect, adjustment, smart object, font, color-management feature or plug-in is not guaranteed. Test an important file and keep the original application or a flattened reference when compatibility matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GIMP free on Ubuntu?
Yes. Ubuntu distributes GIMP in its repositories, and GIMP also publishes an official Flathub build. Both are free and open-source; choose the package source based on the version and integration you need.
Does Ubuntu 24.04 install GIMP 3 with apt?
No. Ubuntu 24.04’s repository currently provides the GIMP 2.10.36 line. Install the official Flathub Flatpak if you specifically want the current GIMP 3.x series.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I install GIMP 2.10 and GIMP 3 together?
Yes, but duplicate menu entries and ambiguous launches are easy to cause. Check each version explicitly and keep only the installation you actually need.
Can GIMP open Photoshop files perfectly?
It can open some Photoshop files, but effects, smart objects, fonts, plug-ins, adjustment layers and color workflows may not transfer exactly.
Where should I keep a GIMP project?
Save the editable master as an XCF file in a backed-up folder, then export separate PNG, JPEG, WebP or TIFF copies for delivery.
How do I reset GIMP settings without losing them?
Check your version, then rename its configuration directory rather than deleting it. For GIMP 3.2, use mv ~/.config/GIMP/3.2 ~/.config/GIMP/3.2.backup and restart.
