Start by removing what bees can reach: inspect for drips and exposed nectar, wash sticky residue from the feeder and nearby surfaces, and fit compatible bee guards over the feeding ports. If you replace the feeder, a red design without yellow parts may help as a secondary choice. These measures protect access for hummingbirds without requiring insecticide or harm to bees.

No single adjustment guarantees an empty feeder. Bees and hummingbirds are both seeking a concentrated sugar source, and hot weather can increase bee visits. The practical goal is to make nectar accessible to hummingbirds while reducing the exposed, leaking or splash-covered nectar that attracts bees.

Why bees are gathering at your hummingbird feeder

Hummingbird nectar is an attractive food source for more than birds. Bees also seek sweet liquids, so an open feeding port, a drip down the reservoir or a sticky film on the outside can turn the feeder into an easy insect feeding station. A feeder may look closed while still leaving small amounts of sugar water where bees can reach them.

Temperature matters, too. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service explains: “Bees will inevitably visit your hummingbird feeder, especially in hot weather.” That statement is a warning against expecting a perfect exclusion method, not a reason to abandon the feeder. You can reduce the opportunity at the port and remove the residue that keeps attracting insects.

Before changing equipment, watch the feeder for a few minutes. Note whether bees are entering a port, drinking from a wet surface, clustering around a seam or simply investigating the feeder. The observation points to the most useful first step.

What each solution actually does

Measure What it changes Important limitation Best use
Bee guards Caps or grates restrict a bee’s access to nectar at the feeding port while leaving an opening that a hummingbird can use. They do not necessarily prevent bees from approaching or landing on the feeder. Guards can also become sticky when hummingbirds splash sugar water onto them. Use on a feeder with compatible ports, or select a feeder designed to accept guards.
Cleaning and leak checks Removes exposed nectar and residue from ports, seams, perches and the outside of the feeder. Cleaning cannot stop bees from finding a functioning nectar source if access remains open. Make this the first response to a sudden increase in bee activity and part of regular feeder care.
Red components, no yellow components Uses a color choice supported by cooperative-extension guidance that bees are more attracted to yellow than red. Color is only a supporting factor; it does not override leaks, exposed nectar or hot-weather activity. Consider it when buying a replacement feeder, not as a stand-alone fix.
Ant moat Creates a water barrier intended to interrupt ants reaching the feeder. It addresses ants, not bees flying to the nectar ports or landing on the feeder. Use only when ants are also a problem, and do not substitute it for bee controls.

A step-by-step way to reduce bee visits

1. Inspect every place nectar can escape

Remove the feeder or hold it where you can see the ports and seams clearly. Look for a hanging drop, a damp trail, crystallized sugar, or a glossy sticky patch. Check the underside of the reservoir, the joints around each port and any place where a perch meets the nectar chamber. A tiny leak can expose enough food to attract repeated visits.

Also look at the hanger, hook and branch or bracket below the feeder. Nectar can drip onto those surfaces and remain available even after the feeder itself appears dry. If bees are drinking from the outside rather than entering a port, the residue is the immediate target.

2. Clean the feeder and rinse away residue

Take the feeder apart as far as its design allows. Wash the reservoir, ports, perches, guards and removable seals, then rinse thoroughly so no sweet film remains. Rinse the exterior as well; wiping only the inside leaves the scent and taste that bees are following. Clean any nectar from the hanging hardware and the surface beneath the feeder.

Use a feeder that is easy to disassemble and inspect. Narrow passages and permanently attached decorative pieces make it harder to remove residue, which can undermine otherwise useful guards. Penn State Extension cautions that bee guards are not foolproof in part because hummingbirds may splash sugar water onto them, so the guards themselves need cleaning.

3. Correct the leak before rehanging

Inspect seals, threaded connections and port inserts while the feeder is empty. Reassemble the parts firmly according to the feeder’s design, without forcing or deforming them. Fill it, hold it upright and watch for seepage before returning it outdoors. If nectar still appears around a seam or port, replacing the worn or incompatible part is more reliable than repeatedly wiping the drip.

Compatibility matters when buying replacement guards. A guard made for one port shape may not seat correctly on another feeder. Confirm that the guard fits the exact port and remains secure when the feeder is lifted, cleaned and rehung.

4. Add compatible bee guards

Fit a cap or grate over each feeding port, or choose a feeder manufactured with guards already integrated. The guard’s job is to narrow or shield the route to the liquid. It is not a repellent and does not make the feeder invisible to bees; insects may still circle, land or investigate the outside.

After installation, watch a hummingbird feed. The bird should be able to reach the nectar without struggling against a loose guard. Check that every port has the same treatment, because one unguarded or poorly seated opening can remain the easiest target.

5. Consider feeder color when replacing equipment

If you are buying a new feeder, consider one with red components and without yellow decorative parts. Cooperative-extension advice indicates that bees are more attracted to yellow than red. This is a secondary design choice, not a promise that a red feeder will end bee visits. A leaking red feeder can still provide the same accessible sugar source.

6. Rehang only after the outside is dry

Once the feeder is clean and the leak has been addressed, rinse the surrounding hanger and let the exterior dry before putting it back. Recheck the feeder shortly after rehanging and again whenever you refill or move it. The purpose of the check is to catch a new drip or splash before a sticky trail accumulates.

How to keep bee guards effective

Clean the guards, not just the reservoir

Hummingbirds can flick or splash nectar onto the guard surface while feeding. That splash may leave the very sugar film the guard was meant to keep away from bees. During each cleaning, examine the guard from both sides and rinse around its attachment point. If a guard becomes cracked, warped or permanently sticky, replace it with a compatible part rather than leaving a damaged barrier in place.

Choose access over decoration

A feeder with fewer hard-to-reach recesses is easier to keep free of residue. When comparing designs, prioritize removable ports, accessible seals and guards that can be taken off for washing. Decorative yellow pieces add no bee-control benefit according to the cited color guidance, and complicated ornament can make inspection more difficult.

Watch for a new source after every refill

A bee problem can return after a feeder is cleaned if a refill introduces a fresh leak. Hold the filled feeder upright for a moment, inspect the underside and look at the first few inches of the hanger. If bees suddenly appear after a refill, treat that timing as a clue to inspect the fill level, seal and port assembly rather than assuming the guards have failed.

Troubleshooting when bees are still present

Bees are landing on the feeder but not drinking

This usually means the feeder remains an attractive visual or scent cue, even if the guard blocks direct access. Keep the exterior clean and accept that guards restrict access rather than deterring every approach. Do not spray the feeder with insecticide; chemical residue can expose birds and insects to an unnecessary hazard, and the available guidance supports exclusion and cleaning instead.

Bees are reaching nectar through one port

Inspect that port for a missing, loose or incompatible guard. Compare it with the other openings and reseat or replace the guard if its fit differs. Check for a crack around the port that could expose liquid outside the intended opening.

Bees gather below the feeder

Look for a drip on the reservoir base, hanger or ground surface. Wash the affected area and correct the leak before relying on a guard. Nectar that has already reached a nearby surface can continue attracting bees after the feeder itself is clean.

The problem is actually ants

Ants crawling along the hanger are a different problem from bees flying to the ports. An ant moat may interrupt that crawling route, but it will not stop bees. Keep the remedies separate so an ant device does not create false confidence about bee control.

Bee activity increases during a heat wave

Hot weather is specifically identified by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a time when feeder visits are especially likely. Increase your attention to leaks, splashes and exposed residue during those conditions. The appropriate response is maintenance and port access control, not an expectation that any feeder will remain bee-free.

What not to do

  • Do not spray insecticide on the feeder, guards or nectar. The practical guidance for this problem is to remove exposed food and restrict access, not to contaminate a bird-feeding station.
  • Do not kill bees simply because they visit. Bees are responding to an accessible sugar source, and a clean, guarded feeder can reduce access without treating the insects as pests to eliminate.
  • Do not block every port or remove nectar access in a way that prevents hummingbirds from feeding. Test the feeder after any guard installation and replace a design that birds cannot use comfortably.
  • Do not assume an ant moat is a universal insect solution. It is designed for ants moving along a support, not bees arriving through the air.

Choosing a replacement feeder or guard

If cleaning and a leak repair do not solve the access problem, compare products by function rather than by decorative appearance. The following checks address the limitations identified by wildlife and extension guidance.

Check before buying Why it matters
Guard compatibility The replacement guard must match the feeder’s port shape and attachment method; compatibility varies by design.
Disassembly Removable parts let you wash ports, seals and guards instead of leaving hidden sugar residue.
Leak-prone seams Fewer complicated joints make drips easier to detect and correct.
Color scheme Red components and the absence of yellow may be worth considering as a supporting measure, but neither replaces cleaning.
Bird access Ports and guards should allow hummingbirds to feed normally; observe the feeder after installation.

No published efficacy percentage establishes that a particular guard, color or cleaning routine eliminates bees. Treat a product claim that promises total exclusion cautiously unless it provides credible, specific evidence for that exact feeder design.

A realistic goal for your feeder

The most defensible outcome is reduced access to nectar and less residue for bees to find, not a guarantee that no bee will ever approach. Bees may still investigate a guarded feeder, especially in hot weather, but a dry exterior, sound seals and clean guards remove the easiest food sources. Hummingbirds can continue using the station while you manage the conditions that draw insects.

For ongoing care, make the inspection part of every refill: look for a drip, feel for stickiness around the ports, rinse any residue from the outside and verify that each guard remains seated. If the same port repeatedly leaks or attracts bees, replace the faulty compatible part or the feeder rather than escalating to chemicals.
