The most dependable way to keep a cherished or glass ornament from slipping is to fasten its hanger around the branch instead of leaving it loosely hooked. The American Kennel Club specifically recommends securing these ornaments with wire. That makes a fall less likely, not impossible, so placement, supervision and cleanup still matter.
Keep breakable, sharp, metal and small-part decorations above the reach of children and pets. Use less fragile decorations on lower branches, and treat any ribbon, yarn or wire as a potential household hazard rather than as a guarantee that an ornament cannot fall.

Start with the ornament, not the tree
There are two different problems people often combine: an ornament can move or fall from its branch, and the entire tree can tip. Fastening an ornament addresses only the first problem. Stabilizing the tree addresses the second.
For a sentimental or glass ornament, the American Kennel Club (AKC) advises securing it to a branch with wire. The practical goal is to keep the hanger from sliding off the branch when the branch moves or someone brushes past the tree. No comparative holding-strength test establishes that wire is stronger than ribbon, yarn or commercial clips, so describe the result accurately: a properly fastened hanger is less likely to slip or fall than a loose one.

Wire-fastening procedure
- Choose the branch where the ornament will hang, giving priority to a sturdy branch rather than a flexible tip.
- Place the ornament’s hanger around the branch.
- Use ornament wire to twist or tie the hanger to the branch so the hanger cannot simply lift off the branch.
- Check that the ornament is sitting securely and that no sharp wire end is exposed where a person or animal could contact it.
- After decorating, look beneath the tree for fallen hooks, wire or ornaments and remove anything that has dropped.
The AKC guidance is particularly relevant to valuable, sentimental and glass decorations. It does not promise that an ornament will survive a strong impact, a broken branch or a child or animal pulling on it. A fastener reduces one failure mode—sliding off the branch—but does not make a fragile ornament indestructible.

Put fragile decorations out of reach
Placement is a safety measure in its own right. Health Canada says: “Keep metal, sharp or breakable tree ornaments with small removable parts away from young children and pets.” The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) likewise advises against putting breakable ornaments or ornaments with small detachable parts on lower branches that children or pets can reach.
That advice applies even when an ornament has been wired in place. A secure hanger cannot prevent a reachable decoration from being grabbed, chewed, tugged or broken.
A practical branch plan
- Upper branches: Put glass, sharp-edged, metal and small-part ornaments where a child or pet cannot reach them. Secure especially cherished pieces with wire.
- Lower branches: Reserve these for decorations that are less fragile and do not have small detachable parts.
- At the tree’s perimeter: Keep ornaments away from nearby furniture, shelving or other surfaces that give a child or climbing animal an easy route to them.
- At the base: Check regularly for fallen ornaments, hooks, wire and fragments, particularly after children or pets have been near the tree.
“Nonbreakable” is a useful category for reachable branches, but it is not a certification that a particular item is safe for every child or pet. Inspect any decoration for detachable pieces, sharp edges and materials that could be chewed or swallowed before placing it low on the tree.

How to choose between wire, ribbon and yarn
Wire is the fastening method specifically described by the AKC for sentimental or glass ornaments. Orange County Animal Care offers ribbon or yarn as an alternative to metal hooks. Those options have different hazards, especially in a home with pets.
| Hanging approach | Useful when | Safety issue to manage |
|---|---|---|
| Wire secured around a branch | A treasured or glass ornament needs its hanger held in place | Metal wire or hooks can be dangerous if chewed or swallowed; keep them out of reach and remove fallen pieces promptly. |
| Ribbon | You want an alternative to a metal hook, as suggested by Orange County Animal Care | The FDA warns that pets may be attracted to string and ribbons. Supervise pets and collect loose lengths. |
| Yarn | You want the other non-metal alternative mentioned by Orange County Animal Care | Loose string-like material can attract pets; do not leave dangling lengths available for chewing or swallowing. |
There is no evidence here that one of these methods has a measured, universal advantage in holding strength. The useful decision is based on exposure: metal hardware presents a chewing or swallowing concern, while ribbon and yarn present a string-entanglement or ingestion concern. Whichever method you use, keep the ornament out of reach when it is fragile or the hanger itself could be dangerous.
If you use ribbon or yarn
- Use it only where you can keep loose ends under control.
- Inspect the finished hanger for a dangling tail that a cat, dog or young child could grab.
- Supervise pets around the decorated tree, especially during the first hours after decorating or whenever a new ornament is added.
- Pick up and discard or store any loose ribbon, yarn or thread immediately.
- Move the ornament higher if a pet shows interest in the material, even if the ornament itself is nonbreakable.
Orange County Animal Care’s suggestion is an alternative to metal hooks, not a claim that ribbon or yarn is harmless. The FDA’s warning about pets being attracted to string and ribbons is the reason supervision and cleanup belong in the plan.
Keep cats and dogs from knocking ornaments down
A pet can dislodge an ornament without the hanger failing: it may bat at the decoration, pull the branch, chew the material or climb into the tree. The safest response combines fastening with placement.

For cats
- Keep breakable, sharp, metal and small-part ornaments above the cat’s reachable area.
- Do not leave ribbon, yarn or wire ends dangling where a cat can play with them.
- Check the floor under the tree after periods of activity; a fallen hook or broken ornament can remain hazardous even when the tree appears intact.
- If a particular ornament repeatedly attracts attention, move it rather than relying on a tighter hanger.
For dogs
- Keep low branches free of glass and decorations with removable pieces.
- Use less fragile decorations on reachable branches, while remembering that “nonbreakable” does not guarantee safety for every dog.
- Remove fallen metal hooks, wire and ornament fragments promptly so they cannot be chewed or swallowed.
- Supervise around ribbon and yarn because the FDA identifies string and ribbons as materials that may attract pets.
Wire can reduce the chance that an ornament simply slips from its branch, but it cannot stop a determined animal from pulling the ornament or branch. Distance and supervision are therefore essential parts of securing the display.

Secure the whole tree separately
If the tree is unstable, climbable or likely to be pulled, anchor the tree as a separate project. Orange County Animal Care describes tying the tree with fishing line to a wall or ceiling hook. That measure helps address whole-tree tipping; it does not attach individual ornaments to branches.
What tree anchoring does—and does not do
- It does: reduce the chance that the complete tree will tip when pulled or climbed.
- It does not: stop an ornament from sliding off a branch, prevent glass from breaking, or remove the need to keep hazardous decorations out of reach.
- It is not a universal installation specification: the county guidance identifies fishing line and a wall or ceiling hook, but does not establish a tested strength rating or one arrangement suitable for every tree, room or building.
Follow the hardware manufacturer’s instructions for any hook or anchor you install, and choose an attachment point that is appropriate for the wall or ceiling. Keep the line itself out of a child’s or pet’s reach and inspect it after the tree has been moved or adjusted.
A complete decorating sequence
Using the same order each year helps prevent a secure hanger from being undermined by poor placement.

- Assess the room. Identify where children and pets can reach, whether furniture creates a climbing route, and whether the tree can be pulled or tipped.
- Stabilize the tree if needed. If tipping is a concern, use an appropriate tie or anchor arrangement. Remember that this is separate from ornament fastening.
- Sort the ornaments. Separate glass, sharp, metal and small-part decorations from less fragile pieces.
- Assign locations. Put hazardous or breakable items higher; reserve lower branches for decorations that are less fragile and free of small detachable parts.
- Fasten valuable pieces. For sentimental or glass ornaments, secure the hanger around the branch with wire as described by the AKC.
- Control alternative hangers. If using ribbon or yarn instead of metal hooks, check for loose lengths and keep pets supervised.
- Inspect the finished tree. Look for exposed wire, dangling ribbon, unstable branches and ornaments that can be reached from nearby furniture.
- Recheck during the season. Examine the floor and lower branches after activity, and remove fallen hooks, wire, ribbon, yarn, fragments or ornaments immediately.
What to do when an ornament keeps falling
Repeated falls usually indicate that the problem is not solved by simply rehanging the ornament in the same way. Use this troubleshooting sequence.

Move the ornament to a sturdier branch and secure the hanger around that branch with wire. If the ornament is fragile, place it higher and away from reachable furniture. Do not treat a tighter fastening as permission to put it within a child’s or pet’s reach.
The branch bends or shakes
Choose a stronger branch closer to the trunk, reduce the number of ornaments on that branch, or relocate the decoration. Wire can hold a hanger to a branch, but it cannot make a weak branch support more weight than it can safely carry.
A pet is attracted to the hanger
Remove loose ribbon, yarn, wire or metal hooks from the pet’s access. Move the ornament above reach or replace it with a less fragile decoration that has no small detachable parts. FDA guidance specifically warns that string and ribbons may attract pets, so supervision alone should not be used to justify leaving loose lengths at floor level.

The whole tree moves
Stop treating the symptom as an ornament problem. Inspect the stand and consider anchoring the tree to a wall or ceiling hook with fishing line as described by Orange County Animal Care. Continue to secure individual ornaments separately.
An ornament has fallen or broken
Keep children and pets away while you collect every visible piece. Check beneath furniture and around the stand for hooks, wire, ribbon, yarn and fragments. Replace the low ornament arrangement if repeated falls show that the location remains reachable or unstable.
Why placement matters more than a “strongest” hanger claim
No comparative testing establishes a ranking of wire, ribbon, yarn or commercial ornament clips by holding strength. A hanger that seems secure in a still tree may fail when a branch flexes, the tree is bumped or an animal pulls the ornament. The evidence supports a layered approach rather than a strongest-product promise:
- Fasten the hanger to the branch for fragile or sentimental ornaments.
- Keep hazardous materials and breakable decorations beyond reach.
- Use less fragile, small-part-free decorations on lower branches.
- Control or avoid loose string-like materials around pets.
- Anchor the tree separately if tipping is possible.
- Inspect and clean the area throughout the season.
That approach also explains why buying a category such as Christmas ornament wire hangers can be reasonable for the fastening step without proving that any particular listing, brand or product has a tested holding capacity. Metal hooks still require careful placement and cleanup.
Safety guidance in context
The CPSC’s official holiday guidance includes the instruction, “Avoid sharp or breakable decorations.” Its published figure of 2,200 holiday-decoration injuries treated in hospital emergency rooms covers November 1, 1976, through January 31, 1977. That is historical reporting-period data, not a current annual injury rate, but it illustrates why breakage, sharp parts and reachable decorations deserve attention.

Quick Recap
Final checklist before you leave the tree unattended
- Are glass, sharp, metal and small-part ornaments above the reach of children and pets?
- Are sentimental ornaments fastened around their branches with wire rather than left on a loose hook?
- Are lower-branch decorations less fragile and free of detachable small parts?
- Are ribbon and yarn ends short, controlled and kept under supervision around pets?
- Have all fallen hooks, wire, ribbon, yarn and fragments been removed?
- If the tree can tip, has it been separately anchored with an appropriate arrangement?
- Have you avoided assuming that any hanger guarantees an ornament will not fall?
