The reliable method is simple: take the cushions off the pallet daybed when rain is expected or the bed will sit unused, dry them completely through the filling, then keep them in a genuinely dry, ventilated storage area. A furniture cover protects the frame and cushions from some debris and exposure, but it is not automatically waterproof and cannot replace dry storage during prolonged rain or winter.
The risk is hidden moisture. A cushion that feels dry on the surface may still hold water in its foam, seams or piping. Enclosing that moisture under a cover, in a bag or in a box creates the warm, poorly ventilated conditions in which mildew and mold can develop.

Why pallet daybed cushions become moldy
Pallet daybeds usually use large, thick seat and back cushions. Their size makes them comfortable, but it also means water can remain inside the filling long after the outer fabric feels dry. Moisture can enter through seams, zips and the underside of the cushion, then remain trapped when cushions are stacked or covered.
Three situations create most problems:
- Storing cushions while they are still damp. Even slight dampness can be retained inside a cushion and lead to mold or a persistent musty smell.
- Leaving cushions on the daybed overnight. Dew, condensation and overnight rain can wet fabric even when the day was sunny.
- Assuming a cover is dry storage. Covers vary widely. Some repel water; others are only water-resistant, and seams, vents and wind-driven rain can still allow moisture in.
Harbour Lifestyle’s 2026 outdoor-cushion care guidance warns that slightly damp cushions stored in a bag or under a furniture cover can develop mold inside the pad. That warning applies particularly to thick pallet cushions, where the interior dries more slowly than the surface.

The safest rule is therefore procedural rather than product-based: remove, drain, ventilate, dry completely, then store.
What to do when rain is forecast
Remove the cushions before the weather arrives
Bring the seat and back cushions indoors, or move them to a dedicated cushion-storage area that remains dry. Do this whenever rain is expected and whenever the daybed will not be used overnight. Laura James’ cushion-care guidance specifically recommends bringing outdoor cushions inside during rain and overnight.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not leave cushions on the pallet frame under a cover simply because the cover is fitted. A cover may reduce direct exposure, but wind can drive water underneath and condensation can form inside. If the cover is described as water-repellent rather than waterproof, treat that wording literally: it offers some resistance, not guaranteed dryness.
If you cannot move them immediately
Keep cushions upright rather than flat, separate them so air can circulate, and place them in a sheltered location while you arrange proper storage. Do not seal them in plastic or push them into a tightly packed bag while damp. Temporary shelter is only a holding step; inspect and dry the cushions before final storage.
How to dry a wet cushion properly
Drying must reach the filling, not just the fabric. Use this sequence after rain, washing or a spill.
- Take the cushion off the daybed. Remove it from the pallet slats so the underside is exposed and water can escape.
- Stand it on its edge in a sheltered, ventilated place. Choose a location protected from more rain but open enough for air movement. Avoid pressing the cushion against a wall or stacking it with other cushions.
- Orient the zip downward if the construction allows it. Laura James advises standing wet cushions on their sides with the zip facing down and open so trapped water can drain. Follow the cushion’s own care label first; not every cushion has the same zip, insert or fabric construction.
- Open the zip only when the care label permits. Opening it can expose the interior and improve ventilation, but forcing a zip or removing an insert that is not designed to come out can damage the cover or filling.
- Turn the cushion during drying. Rotate it so each side, edge and underside receives airflow. Pay attention to seams, corners and the area around the zip.
- Check the interior, not only the face fabric. Press several areas and inspect the seams. If the filling feels cool, heavy, clammy or smells musty, it is not ready for storage.
- Store only when completely dry throughout. “Dry to the touch” is not enough for a thick cushion. If any doubt remains, continue ventilating rather than sealing it under a cover or in a bag.
No universal drying time can be given responsibly: cushion thickness, filling, humidity, airflow and the amount of water absorbed all change the result. Use the condition of the entire cushion as the test instead of relying on a fixed number of hours.

Choosing where to store cushions
The best storage place is indoors or in a purpose-built dry area where moisture cannot enter and air can move around the cushions. A utility room, dry garage, shed with a sound roof, or indoor cupboard can work if it remains dry and the cushions are not packed tightly. Do not use a location that regularly becomes humid, leaks, or traps condensation.
Indoor room or cupboard
Indoor storage provides the most dependable protection through wet weather and winter. Keep cushions off a damp floor and avoid pushing them tightly against an exterior wall. Leave enough space to remove them without crushing the filling, and do not place heavy objects on top for long periods.
Dedicated cushion-storage bag
A dedicated outdoor cushion bag can be useful for cushions that are already dry. Measure the largest seat and back cushions before buying: pallet daybed dimensions vary, and a bag only works if the cushions fit without being forced or folded sharply. Store the filled bag in a dry location rather than assuming the bag itself creates a dry environment.
Never use a storage bag to hide dampness. Moisture sealed inside a bag is difficult to detect and can remain against the fabric and filling for days.

These locations are suitable only when they stay dry. Check the roof, walls and floor for leaks or condensation, especially before winter. Raise the cushions or their bag above a potentially damp floor and keep them away from wet tools, soil, fuel containers and anything else that adds moisture or odor.
Outdoor storage box
An outdoor box is not automatically a dry-storage solution. Its suitability depends on its construction, seals, drainage, ventilation and location. A box that admits rain or develops condensation can create the same mold risk as a cover. Use one only when the manufacturer specifies that it is intended to keep cushions dry, and still put away cushions that are damp until they have dried fully.

Cover versus dry storage: what each option can and cannot do
| Option | What it is useful for | Limit to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor or dedicated dry storage | Protecting completely dry cushions from rain, dew and winter exposure | Requires enough space and regular handling |
| Dedicated cushion-storage bag | Keeping dry cushions together and protected from dust in a dry location | Must be correctly sized; it must not be used to seal damp cushions |
| Fitted daybed or patio cover | Reducing debris and some direct weather exposure while the furniture remains outside | Product-specific; water-repellent or water-resistant fabric is not the same as waterproof dry storage |
| Outdoor storage box | Convenient storage where the box is specifically designed and maintained for dry cushion storage | Rain entry and internal condensation can still wet cushions; check the maker’s specifications |
Fatboy’s Paletti maintenance information describes its cover as water-repellent, not waterproof, and recommends dry indoor storage during long wet periods and winter. Kettler’s guidance for its Palma day-bed cover likewise says a cover is not a substitute for secure, dry cushion storage. These are product-specific instructions, but they show why you must read the instructions for your own cover rather than infer performance from its appearance.
How to use a furniture cover without creating a moisture trap
- Dry the cushions before covering the frame. Do not cover cushions that are damp from rain, washing or dew.
- Remove cushions for prolonged wet weather. A cover is not a reason to leave them outside through a forecast of continuous rain.
- Fit the cover as its maker directs. Do not block vents or trap pooled water on top of it.
- Inspect after storms. Check the underside, corners and seams for water entry or condensation.
- Air the furniture and cover when conditions improve. If the inside of the cover is wet, let it dry before replacing it.
Whether a cover is called protective, showerproof, water-resistant or water-repellent, those labels do not establish that it is waterproof. Only the manufacturer’s instructions can define the intended level of protection.
Cleaning mildew on the removable cover
Visible mildew on the outer cover is a different problem from mold that has penetrated the cushion insert. Start with the care label and the cushion maker’s instructions. Test any treatment on an inconspicuous area before treating the visible mark.
Harbour Lifestyle’s guidance recommends either its named fabric cleaner or a mild warm-water-and-white-vinegar solution applied with a soft brush, followed by thorough rinsing and complete air drying. That is a retailer-specific procedure, not a universal treatment for every outdoor textile. Some fabrics, coatings, colors and fillings may react badly to vinegar, detergent or vigorous brushing.
A cautious cleaning sequence
- Move the cushion to a ventilated area and protect nearby surfaces.
- Read the fabric and filling care instructions before applying anything.
- Remove loose surface debris gently; avoid driving spores deeper with aggressive scrubbing.
- Use only a cleaner the label permits, at the stated dilution.
- Rinse as directed so residue does not remain in the fabric.
- Air-dry the cover and insert completely before reassembling or storing.
Do not tumble-dry unless the care label specifically allows it. Heat and mechanical action can shrink, distort or damage outdoor covers and their coatings.
When mold has reached the cushion insert
Mold inside the foam or other filling is harder to resolve than a mark on a removable cover. Harbour Lifestyle warns that an affected inner pad can retain a persistent odor and staining and may require replacement. Cleaning the visible fabric does not prove that the interior is clean.

- Inspect seams, piping, the zip area and the underside, not just the top surface.
- Treat a strong musty odor as evidence that moisture may remain inside.
- Do not return a suspect insert to a clean cover and assume the problem is solved.
- Follow the maker’s instructions for removable inserts; if the filling cannot be safely cleaned and dried, replacement may be the practical option.
Do not generalize care advice from one fabric to another. The correct response depends on the cover textile, filling, construction and the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A maintenance routine that prevents repeat problems
After each use
- Brush off leaves, soil and other debris before it becomes wet and embedded.
- Check whether the cushions have absorbed moisture from spills, dew or rain.
- Stand damp cushions on edge in a sheltered, ventilated place instead of stacking them.
Before overnight storage
- Bring cushions inside or place them in a genuinely dry storage area.
- Confirm that the underside and filling are dry, not only the top fabric.
- Keep cushions loose enough for air circulation; avoid compressing them into an undersized bag.
Before winter
- Wash or spot-clean only according to the care label.
- Dry every cushion completely before packing.
- Inspect the storage room, shed or box for leaks, damp floors and condensation.
- Use a correctly sized cushion bag if desired, but keep it in a dry location.
- Store the daybed cover separately if it is wet, and dry it before folding.
Winter storage should be treated as long-term storage: indoor or secure dry storage is preferable to leaving cushions under a cover on the daybed.
How to choose a storage setup for your daybed
Compare possible setups using four practical questions:
- Will the largest cushion fit? Measure the longest, widest and thickest seat and back cushions. Include any piping, handles or unusually bulky corners.
- Does the location stay dry? Look for roof leaks, damp floors, condensation and wind-driven rain rather than relying on the word “outdoor.”
- Can you move cushions easily? A storage method that is difficult to access is likely to be skipped when rain is forecast. Choose a location close enough for regular use.
- Is it intended for cushions or only for the frame? A fitted furniture cover may be shaped to protect the pallet structure while offering limited protection to soft furnishings. Check the product instructions.
Convenience matters because prevention depends on doing the routine every time. If the storage space is too small, too far away or awkward to open, redesign the setup before the wet season rather than relying on a cover to compensate.
Troubleshooting common situations
“The cushion feels dry, but it smells musty.”
Do not seal it. Separate it, ventilate it and inspect the seams and filling. Odor can indicate retained moisture or mold inside, even when the outer fabric feels dry.
“Rain started before I could bring everything in.”
Remove the cushions as soon as practical, stand them on edge in a sheltered ventilated place, and open the zip only if the care label permits. Drain and dry them fully before storage.

“The cover is marketed as water-resistant.”
Use it for limited exposure and debris protection, but do not treat it as waterproof or as a replacement for indoor storage during sustained rain or winter. Follow the cover maker’s specific instructions.
“There is mildew on the fabric, but the insert looks clean.”
Follow the fabric care label, use only a compatible cleaner, rinse as directed and dry completely. Continue checking for odor or staining in the insert before reassembly.
“The storage bag is slightly too small.”
Do not force the cushions in. Compression can make handling difficult and reduce airflow. Choose a bag with interior dimensions that accommodate the largest cushion without crushing it.
“The outdoor box is dry in summer but damp in winter.”
Seasonal performance matters. Inspect for condensation and leaks during cold or wet weather, and move cushions to indoor storage when the box cannot remain reliably dry.
Material and construction caveats
Outdoor cushions are not interchangeable. Tropitone describes water-resistant, quick-draining construction for its own fabrics and cushions, but that performance should not be generalized to a homemade pallet daybed or to another manufacturer’s insert. A pallet cushion may use a different foam, batting, seam treatment, zip design or fabric coating.
Use the care label as the controlling instruction for washing, opening zips, removing inserts, applying cleaners and using heat. If the label conflicts with a general online tip, follow the label or contact the cushion maker.

The practical decision rule
When the daybed is unused, especially overnight or before rain, move the cushions to indoor or dedicated dry storage. When they get wet, stand them on edge in a sheltered, ventilated place, drain them with the zip facing down only when the construction and care label allow it, and wait until the filling is fully dry. Use a furniture cover as an exposure and debris barrier—not as proof that cushions are safe outside for a wet season. Treat mildew on a removable cover according to its care instructions, and regard persistent odor, staining or suspected mold in the insert as a reason to seek manufacturer guidance or consider replacement.
