Use outdoor-rated string lights to outline porches and railings, spotlights to bring larger props into focus, and battery-operated lights or glow sticks inside jack-o’-lanterns. Before switching anything on, check product labels and condition, follow the manufacturer’s directions, and keep cords and decorations out of visitors’ paths.
Choose lighting to suit the decoration
Start with the effect you want, then check that the light is rated for the place it will be used. Product instructions and ratings—not appearance alone—determine whether a set is suitable for an outdoor display.
Outline a porch, railing, or display edge with string lights
Use decorative string lights to trace the edges of a porch, railing, tree, or display. UL Solutions says its indoor-only decorative light strings bear a green holographic label, while indoor/outdoor strings bear a red one. Check the actual product marking and instructions; a label applies to that product, not every string light in its category. (UL Solutions, Decorative Lighting Strings)

Secure outdoor lights to a firm support with suitable fasteners, following the manufacturer’s installation instructions. CPSC advises securing them against wind. (CPSC, Holiday Decoration Safety Tips)
Use spotlights to focus attention on larger props
A spotlight placed beside or above a large decoration can direct attention to it or cast colored light over the display. For a metallic tree, CPSC advises placing colored spotlights above or beside it, never fastening them onto the tree. Follow the specific light’s instructions for positioning and use. Light jack-o’-lanterns without an open flame
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends battery-operated lights or glow sticks instead of open-flame candles in jack-o’-lanterns. (CPSC, Halloween safety tips, October 18, 2022)
Check the full setup for plug-in displays
For mains-powered decorations, check the decoration and cord labels, ratings, and instructions. CPSC identifies outdoor extension cords as a distinct category, with safety characteristics that include a jacketed cord; use an outdoor cord when the setup calls for one and follow its specific directions. Inspect and install lights safely
Check every light set before use
Inspect both new and previously used strings. CPSC advises checking for broken or cracked sockets, bare or frayed wires, and loose connections; discard damaged sets. It also recommends using lights tested for safety by a recognized testing laboratory. (CPSC, Halloween safety tips, October 18, 2022)
UL Solutions also advises checking decorative light strings and cords for damage and choosing lights intended for the installation location. Read the product’s own instructions rather than assuming all products have the same installation requirements. (UL Solutions, Decorative Lighting Strings)

Keep routes clear and visible
Remove obstacles from lawns, steps, and porches where visitors will walk. Position decorations and route cords so they do not block a walkway or create a trip hazard. CPSC’s 2022 Halloween release estimated an annual average of 3,200 Halloween-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments over the three years preceding the release; it attributed 25% to falls while setting up or taking down decorations, costume trips, or walking while trick-or-treating. Switch off powered decorations when away or asleep
CPSC advises turning off powered decorations when leaving home or going to bed. Secure outdoor lights against wind and follow the instructions and ratings for both lights and extension cords. (CPSC, Holiday Decoration Safety Tips)

Make a quick choice for your display
