To machine-piece hexagons, sew each inset seam only between two marks placed ¼ inch from the corners that meet. These short seams—often called Y-seams—let the hexagons join without sewing through the next seam allowance. Accurate marking, careful handling of the fabric, and stopping at each intersection are the keys to keeping the patchwork flat.

What makes hexagon piecing different?
Hexagon edges meet at inset intersections, so you cannot simply sew every edge from end to end as you might when joining squares. American Patchwork & Quilting explains that “When joining hexagons rows by machine, set-in seams are required.” The seam must stop where the pieces meet, leaving the neighboring seam allowance free to fold into its own seam.

These seams are commonly called Y-seams. Sewing beyond an endpoint can catch fabric that needs to move for the next seam, creating a tuck or pucker.

Prepare and mark the pieces
- Cut matching hexagons. Use the size and cutting method specified by your quilt pattern. Consistency matters: uneven edges or mismatched shapes make intersections harder to align.
- Mark the seam endpoints on the wrong side. At each corner involved in a joining seam, mark ¼ inch in from the corner along the adjoining edges. A template with holes at the intersection points can make these marks easier to place consistently.
- Arrange the full design before sewing. Keep a layout diagram or reference photo visible, especially for a complex arrangement. It is easy to join the wrong sides when working across rows or moving pieces between the sewing machine and work surface.
Hexagon edges may include bias sections, which can stretch. Handle pieces gently rather than pulling them into alignment. Some quilters lightly starch and press before sewing; cutting on grain and avoiding fabrics that stretch readily can also help keep edges stable.
Sew each Y-seam from mark to mark
- Place the pieces right sides together. Align the edge you are joining and match the two endpoint marks.
- Secure the start. Backstitch briefly or use a few tiny securing stitches at the first mark.
- Sew only to the second mark. Stop at—or just before—the endpoint. Do not stitch into the seam allowance for the next edge.
- Secure the end. Backstitch briefly or use tiny stitches, keeping the secured area within the marked seam.
- Clear the adjoining allowances before the next seam. Open and reposition the pieces one seam at a time. Move nearby flaps and allowances out of the stitching path so they do not get caught.
Take particular care at the endpoint: even a short stitch past the mark can lock the adjoining allowance and make the next edge pull into a pucker. If the fabric is already caught, unpick the few stitches that cross the mark and resew the seam to the endpoint.

Choose an assembly order that suits the pattern
There is no single required sequence. American Patchwork & Quilting demonstrates offset vertical rows; Red Pepper Quilts joins pieces into horizontal rows and then joins row pairs; Michelle Cain describes working with groups of three before combining larger sections. These are different ways to manage the same inset seams, not competing rules.
Follow the layout and assembly order in your pattern when it provides one. Otherwise, choose a sequence that lets you see the design clearly and handle a small, manageable section at a time. Keep the layout reference visible as you join pieces so the orientation does not get reversed.

Press the intersections flat
Press gently so you do not stretch the edges or distort the points. Tutorials use different approaches to seam allowances: American Patchwork & Quilting alternates clockwise and counterclockwise directions at successive intersections, while other quilters press consistently or rotate allowances into a swirl. Use the method that works with your pattern and fabric, then check that each point lies flat without a bulky fold or trapped tuck.

You can sew hexagons with an ordinary sewing machine; the precision comes from cutting, marking, and controlling the seam endpoints rather than from a specialized machine. A basic template or ruler and rotary cutter offer a flexible way to cut pieces. A specialty hexagon ruler or a die cutter can help when making many repeated shapes, while precut hexagons save the cutting step but limit your choice of size and fabric. The tutorials do not provide a controlled comparison of speed, accuracy, waste, or cost, so choose based on the tools you have and the needs of your project.

Recommended Free Tools
For a first practice, use larger pieces that are easier to manipulate: one tutorial suggests hexagons around four inches or larger, while another recommends a finished side length of at least two inches. Those measurements refer to different dimensions, so check how your pattern or template defines size before cutting. Once you can keep the allowances clear and stop accurately at each mark, smaller pieces are easier to manage.
