For a simple geometric design, quilt a square or rectangular block by stitching from one corner toward the opposite corner, then add more lines or rounds if the block needs extra coverage. First baste and smooth the quilt sandwich; for straight stitching, use a machine-compatible walking foot when your machine supports one.
Prepare the quilt sandwich
Before stitching, hold the quilt top, batting and backing together by basting them. Pin basting and spray basting are both options; the choice depends on your materials and preference. Smooth the layers and correct lumps or visible bunching before you begin. Janome describes these preparation steps in its straight-line quilting guidance.
Choose a quilting path for the block
Start with a corner-to-corner line
A straightforward geometric starting point is to stitch from one corner toward the opposite corner. Angela Walters demonstrates this approach for square and rectangular blocks in her tutorial. The design can be adapted to blocks of different sizes.
Add lines or rounds as needed
For a larger block, add further lines or rounds to build out the geometric pattern. Plan how those lines will sit within the block before sewing, so the quilting follows its shape rather than crowding one area.

Pick the right foot for straight lines
A walking foot, also called an even-feed foot, helps move the quilt layers evenly during straight-line quilting. Janome explains that walking-foot feed dogs help feed the quilt top, batting and backing evenly through the machine. Check your sewing-machine manual for the compatible attachment: foot designs and fit vary by machine. For example, Brother specifies a compact dual-feed foot for straight-line quilting on the machine family covered by its manual.

If you want curves or a more decorative fill inside a square or rectangle, free-motion quilting is an alternative to straight geometric lines. Swirls and figure-eight wishbone motifs are possible choices. This technique requires an appropriate free-motion foot and the correct machine mode; consult your manual for the setup supported by your machine. Utah Education Network’s instructional handout gives a stitch-setting example, but that setting should not be assumed to suit other machines. Test on a sample and follow your machine’s instructions.
