To make a physical 3D painting, build raised forms on a support compatible with your modeling paste, let each layer dry, then use highlights and shadows to make the relief read clearly. This 13-step guide covers a textured relief artwork, not digital texture painting.
Modeling paste or a suitable acrylic texture medium creates actual height; directional light and value contrast help the eye read that form. Follow the instructions for your specific product, since support requirements and drying times vary.

Materials for a 3D relief painting
- Support: choose one listed as suitable on your modeling paste label. A rigid panel is a safe starting point for Liquitex Professional Modeling Paste; other products may list canvas, wood, paper, or additional supports.
- Surface preparation materials: acrylic gesso or binder if appropriate for your support and product instructions.
- A pencil, chalk, or transfer paper: for laying out the design.

- Palette knife: for spreading and shaping the paste.

How to make a 3D painting in 13 steps
1. Choose the physical-relief approach
This tutorial is for a physical artwork with paste-built raised texture or low relief. Painting texture onto a digital 3D model is a different process.

2. Choose a simple subject
Start with broad, recognizable shapes such as flowers, leaves, waves, or abstract forms. Keeping the first design simple makes it easier to control the relief.
3. Pick a compatible support
Check the paste label before choosing a support. Liquitex Professional Modeling Paste is directed for rigid supports, while Royal Talens Amsterdam Modeling Paste lists several absorbent surfaces, including canvas, wood, plywood, cardboard, and paper. Product guidance differs, so do not assume one support works with every paste.

4. Prepare the surface
Make sure the surface is clean and free of dust and grease. For very absorbent surfaces, Royal Talens specifies applying Amsterdam acrylic binder first. Follow the preparation instructions for your chosen product and support.

5. Gather the paste and tools
Set out the modeling paste, a palette or painting knife, acrylic paint if you plan to tint or paint the relief, and any tools for making marks. A comb or fork can create lines, ridges, and grooves.
6. Sketch the major forms
Lightly map the main shapes and the areas that will be raised. Treat the sketch as a guide rather than adding details that the paste may obscure.
7. Lay in the first thin layer
Spread a thin layer with the knife, establishing the broad shapes before building height. Work on a clean surface prepared according to the product directions.

8. Make marks while the paste is workable
Use a comb for straight or wavy lines, a fork for ridges and grooves, or another tool for impressions. Avoid excessive reworking: it can flatten the characteristic peaks of the texture.
9. Let the layer dry
Let the layer dry before adding more paste. Drying time depends on the product and layer thickness; Royal Talens describes its paste as drying in a few hours, depending on thickness. Treat that as product-specific guidance, not a universal timetable.
10. Add further layers gradually
Build the raised forms in successive layers, allowing each to dry. Liquitex says sculptural layers of its Professional Modeling Paste should be no more than a quarter of an inch thick. This is guidance for that product, not a rule for every texture medium. Liquitex also recommends slow drying to help reduce shrinkage cracks.

11. Repair small cracks after drying
If a crack appears, let it dry before repairing it. Liquitex’s guidance for Basics Modeling Paste advises filling a dried crack with another thin layer. Check the directions for your own formula before using that repair approach.
12. Add color and clarify the form
Once the relief has dried, paint it, or tint the paste beforehand if its directions allow. Use darker colors in recesses and lighter colors on raised areas, keeping the highlight direction consistent. A light dry-brush pass can catch the peaks without filling every groove.
13. Finish according to the product directions
Let the paint and relief dry as directed. If you plan to apply a protective finish, choose one compatible with the materials and follow its label. Do not rely on a universal varnish type or cure time; requirements vary by product and conditions.
