To make a boutonniere, condition a sturdy flower, wire it if it needs support, wrap the stem with floral tape, add greenery or texture, then trim and pin it to a lapel. You can keep the design to one focal bloom or build a fuller arrangement with small accent flowers.
Gather the materials
- One sturdy focal flower
- Optional greenery, berries, or small accent flowers
- Florist wire, if the bloom needs support
- Floral tape
- A boutonniere pin
- Small floral shears for trimming
- Optional ribbon for the finish
Choose a flower that suits the scale of the lapel and the event palette. There is no single best flower for every boutonniere: sturdiness, size, season, and the look you want all matter. For supplies, search for floral tape for boutonnieres or florist wire; these are standard materials, not a recommendation of a tested brand or kit.
Choose a simple or layered design

Make the boutonniere

Condition the flower
Choose a fresh, sturdy bloom and leave cut stems in water overnight before assembly, as Gardens Illustrated recommends. This helps prepare the materials, but it does not guarantee a particular finished lifespan.

Support a bloom that may droop
If the flower head needs help holding its angle, wire it before taping. In Team Flower’s demonstrated method, a short piece of 20-gauge wire is folded into a hairpin shape and inserted into the flower. Gardens Illustrated describes a different approach: thread wire through the calyx, form a loop, and draw the wire back to secure the head. These are examples, not universal methods; flower structure affects which technique is suitable. Keep the wire controlled and avoid forcing it through a delicate bloom.

Wrap the stem
Start floral tape close to the flower base and wind it down the stem, covering any support wire. Stretch and handle the tape according to its maker’s directions so it binds neatly. If the stem is already firm and does not need wire, tape the stem on its own.

Add greenery or accents
Place a small sprig of greenery or a texture element behind the focal bloom. For a fuller design, add accent or filler flowers, keeping the components close enough to form one compact arrangement. Secure the additions with more floral tape.

Trim and finish
Use floral shears to trim the stem ends cleanly at a slight angle. Finish the stem with floral tape or a small amount of ribbon, then use a boutonniere pin to attach the piece to the lapel.

Keep it fresh until it is worn
Sturdy flowers are less likely to droop when out of water, and wiring can help support a vulnerable bloom. A how-to source also suggests a light spray of flower food and water and storing the completed boutonniere in a cello bag. No universal storage temperature or guaranteed number of fresh hours is established, so treat those handling suggestions as practical options rather than a promise.

Position the boutonniere on the lapel and fasten it with a boutonniere pin, taking care that the pin holds the stem rather than crushing the flower head. Check that the arrangement sits at the angle you want and that no wire or sharp stem end is exposed.
