Turn a broken china plate into a small arum lily wall mosaic by shaping the fragments around a template, mounting the flower on mosaic mesh, and grouting the assembly against a painted backing board. The beginner-friendly method described by Michelle of A Crafty Mix produces arums about 10 cm (4 inches) high. It works with salvaged china, or with inexpensive white bathroom tiles when you do not have a suitable plate.
The most reliable sequence is to prepare safely, sort fragments by thickness, build each flower from the outside inward, smooth every cut edge, and grout only after the mesh-mounted flowers are fixed to the board. Mesh is optional for mosaics generally, but it is central to this workflow: it lets you make light flower elements separately, store them without grout, and mount them later.

What you are making
An arum lily has a broad, curved petal around a central spadix and stem. In this project the petal is assembled from irregular pieces of broken china (or white ceramic tile), while the center and stem are shaped from air-dry clay. The finished flower is roughly 10 cm (4 inches) tall according to Michelle’s July 16, 2022 A Crafty Mix tutorial; that is a project dimension, not an industry standard.
A printable arum lily template from the tutorial gives you a repeatable outline. You can make one flower, arrange several on a board, or vary the china pattern from flower to flower. Black grout and a black-painted board create a strong outline; another grout color will change the contrast and the apparent spacing between pieces.

Supplies and what each one does
| Supply | Purpose and notes |
|---|---|
| Broken china plate | Petal material with the original pattern and glaze preserved. Choose pieces without cracks that extend through the section you plan to use. |
| Inexpensive white bathroom tiles | The tutorial’s stated alternative when you want a plain, consistent petal color rather than a salvaged pattern. |
| Mosaic mesh | Supports the separate flower assembly so it can be lifted, stored ungrouted, transported, and mounted later. |
| Glue | Holds ceramic pieces to the mesh and later to the backing board. Use only enough to secure each piece. |
| Black grout | Fills the joints and supplies the dark outline used in the example. Follow the package directions for mixing and curing. |
| Air-dry clay | Forms the arum’s stalk and central spadix. |
| Backing board | Permanent surface for the completed flower arrangement. Select a board appropriate for the intended indoor or outdoor display. |
| Cling film and masking tape | Cling film prevents the work from sticking to the board while you build; tape holds mesh over the traced template and masks the board during grouting. |
| 60- or 80-grit sandpaper | 80-grit is specifically used in the tutorial to smooth and shape sharp ceramic edges. The coarser range is useful for removing burrs carefully. |
| Tile nippers | Shape ceramic fragments with controlled bites. Mark the intended cut before squeezing. |
| Optional copper leaf | A decorative accent listed by the tutorial; it is not required to construct the flower. |
Safety before you break or cut china
Ceramic fragments and powdered grout can injure eyes, skin, and lungs. Dryad Education’s ceramic mosaic guide says to wear goggles while cutting with tile nippers. Legacies Upscale Resale also lists gloves and safety goggles for broken-china work. Dryad recommends gloves and a dust mask when mixing powdered grout. Use the current safety directions on your specific grout, adhesive, nippers, and any sealant as the controlling instructions.
- Wear safety goggles whenever you break, nip, or sand ceramic.
- Use gloves when handling fragments and when mixing or applying grout.
- Mix powdered grout with a dust mask and adequate ventilation.
- Keep children and pets away from the cutting and grouting area.
- Collect shards in a rigid container rather than sweeping them into bare hands.
Michelle’s tutorial puts broken china in a strong plastic bag and gently breaks it into smaller pieces. Legacies’ guide describes wrapping china in cloth before tapping it with a hammer. Whichever approach you use, contain the fragments, make small controlled breaks, and inspect every piece before handling it.
Plan the design and prepare the fragments
1. Print and transfer the template
Print the free arum lily template supplied with the tutorial. Trace the outline onto the wood backing or onto paper placed on your work surface. For the mesh method, trace the shape onto the board first, then cover the board with cling film. The film creates a release layer so the glued flower can be lifted after the ceramic has set.

2. Break and sort the china
Break the plate into manageable pieces inside the strong bag or wrapped cloth. Do not try to force a large piece into the outline. Sort fragments by thickness before gluing. If a flower contains pieces with very different thicknesses, its surface will undulate and grout will sit unevenly; grouping similar-thickness pieces for each flower keeps the face more level.
3. Check the pattern side
Place pieces glaze-side up and look for areas of the plate pattern that will read well as a petal. Reserve broad curved sections for the outer edge and smaller fragments for the interior. The template is a guide, not a demand that every fragment be identical: irregular joints are part of the broken-china character.
Build the flower on mosaic mesh
Mesh changes the process from a permanent, piece-by-piece placement to a transferable module. Tape the mesh over the cling-film-covered template so it cannot shift while you work. The tutorial uses just enough glue to hold each fragment; excess adhesive can rise into joints and reduce the space available for grout.

- Place the perimeter first. Start at the outside edge of the petal and work inward. Align the outer contour to the traced template, leaving deliberate, narrow joints between pieces rather than forcing fragments edge-to-edge.
- Mark before nipping. When a fragment needs shaping, mark the cut line, put on goggles, and take small bites with tile nippers. Large bites can crack the piece beyond the line.
- Smooth the edge. Use 80-grit sandpaper to soften sharp points and refine the curve. Sand slowly; the aim is a safe, accurate edge, not a polished surface.
- Fill the interior. Continue from the established outside contour toward the center. Rotate pieces to use their natural curves and keep the gaps reasonably consistent.
- Inspect the whole petal. Confirm that no fragment rocks, overhangs the outline, or leaves a dangerously sharp corner. Add a small amount of glue only where a piece needs support.
Allow the adhesive to set according to its label before lifting the mesh. The tutorial’s method is deliberately economical with glue because grout will later lock the pieces in place.
Shape the clay spadix and stem
Roll air-dry clay into a narrow stalk and a separate central spadix. Trim them to the proportions of your template and let them dry fully. Longer clay pieces may curl upward while drying; Michelle suggests placing a book on them to reduce that upward curl. Protect the book and work surface from clay residue, and do not attach the pieces until they are dry enough to hold their shape.
Transfer the flower to the backing board
- Lift the mesh assembly. Once the ceramic pieces are secure, remove the mesh-mounted flower from the cling film and trim away surplus mesh around the outline.
- Test the arrangement. Set the flower on the backing board and check spacing if you are making more than one. This is the point to adjust orientation or trim mesh; after grouting, changes are difficult.
- Glue the module down. Apply the adhesive appropriate to your backing and display conditions, then press the mesh-mounted flower onto the board. Follow the adhesive’s stated open time and cure time.
- Paint exposed board. Michelle paints the board black to match black grout. Let the paint dry before masking the area around the flower.
Choose adhesive for the display location
The tutorial’s guidance distinguishes indoor and outdoor use, but it is not a comparative product test. For an indoor piece, the author suggests ordinary craft glue. For an outdoor mosaic, she names Wellbond, E6000, or an exterior tile adhesive. Match the adhesive to the board, ceramic, moisture, temperature changes, and the manufacturer’s permitted uses; no cited source establishes that one named product is universally strongest or weatherproof.

| Display plan | Guidance from the tutorial | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor wall art | Ordinary craft glue is suggested. | Verify that the glue bonds both your mesh and backing material and allow the stated cure time. |
| Outdoor display | An exterior tile adhesive or the author’s named alternatives is suggested. | Check exterior and freeze-thaw suitability, moisture limits, and compatibility with the board; follow the product label. |
Grout the mosaic without losing the outline
- Mask the board. Cover the surrounding painted area with masking tape so grout does not spread across places you want to remain clean.
- Mix according to the label. Dryad Education instructs readers to follow the grout manufacturer’s mixing directions. Powdered grout requires the dust-mask precaution described above.
- Work grout into every joint. Press it into the gaps around the ceramic, including the narrow spaces along the perimeter. Keep the piece supported while you work.
- Wipe excess carefully. Use a damp cloth or sponge to remove grout from the ceramic faces. Dryad cautions against soaking the work; too much water can disturb fresh grout and wash material from the joints.
- Leave it undisturbed. Let the grout dry completely. Dryad describes at least 24 hours as a usual general instruction, not a universal cure time. Your package directions control.
- Attach the clay last. After grouting has cured, glue the dried stalk and spadix into position.
Black grout makes the petal joints read as a graphic outline and ties to the black-painted board. A lighter grout will reduce that outline; a contrasting color can make each fragment more prominent. Decide the visual effect before mixing because changing cured grout is laborious.

| Method | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Mesh-mounted assembly | Build separate flowers, lift them from the work surface, store them ungrouted, transport them, and mount them later. The tutorial demonstrates this workflow. | Requires mesh, careful taping, and a transfer step; the module must be supported while it is glued to the board. |
| Direct placement on the backing | Fewer materials and no transfer step; pieces are positioned permanently where they will be grouted. | Rearranging or storing an unfinished flower is harder, and the backing must remain available throughout construction. |
Mesh is therefore optional to mosaic-making in general, but useful when you want lightweight, repeatable flower elements or need to postpone final assembly.
Troubleshooting common problems
Pieces sit at different heights
Remove or regroup fragments before grouting when possible. Sorting by thickness at the start is the tutorial’s preventive measure. A thick fragment beside a thin one can leave a deep or shallow joint that is difficult to fill neatly.

The outline no longer resembles an arum
Stop adding interior pieces and check the perimeter against the template. The outside-in sequence protects the silhouette; if the edge has drifted, lift and reposition pieces before the adhesive cures.
A ceramic edge is sharp
Do not rely on grout to make a sharp point safe. Put on goggles and gloves, take a small nip to remove the point, and smooth the edge with 80-grit sandpaper. Discard fragments that crack unpredictably.
Recommended Free Tools
Grout smears across the board
Mask farther from the flower before application and wipe excess with a damp, not soaking, cloth while the grout is still workable. Once grout has cured, scraping can damage paint or glaze.
The clay stem curls
Support longer pieces with a book while they dry, as the tutorial suggests. Let them dry completely before attachment; forcing a partly dry piece into alignment can create a new bend or crack.
The flower cannot be lifted from the work surface
Cling film should cover the board before the mesh is taped down. If adhesive has contacted an unprotected surface, do not tear the mesh; work around the perimeter carefully and accept that a damaged module may need rebuilding.
Indoor and outdoor finishing decisions
The source material supports a clear distinction in adhesive choice but does not provide long-term weathering tests. For indoor wall art, protect the finished piece from impacts and verify that the backing can carry its weight. For outdoor use, every layer matters: board, adhesive, grout, clay, paint, and mounting hardware must be rated for the actual exposure. Follow each manufacturer’s label rather than assuming that a product described as “exterior” makes the entire assembly weatherproof.
