A bubble plane is a conventional folded paper airplane fitted with a small plastic tip: dip the tip in bubble solution, toss the plane, and it can leave a puff of bubbles behind. Make: presents Bob Knetzger’s design as a starting point for experimentation, not a tested design with guaranteed bubble counts or flight performance.
What you need to make a bubble plane
- 1/8-inch acrylic sheet for the bubble tip.
- Paper to fold into a conventional paper airplane.
- Bubble solution to wet the tip before each throw.
- A laser cutter to cut the supplied SVG design and engrave its ridges. Knetzger says manual cutting and drilling are also possible.
Make: lists the project as Easy, estimates a build time of 1–2 hours, and gives a price estimate of $5–$10. These are the project page’s estimates, not guaranteed costs or timings; actual effort and expense depend on your equipment, material prices, and experience.
Make the bubble tip
Download the SVG from the Make: project page and use it to fabricate the plastic tip. The design has radial ridges around its bubble loops. Those ridges are intended to add surface area so the tip can hold more soap solution.

Laser cutting and engraving
Knetzger describes using a Glowforge and a two-sided sequence: cut and engrave the part, lift it from the surrounding blank, flip it, and reposition it in the blank to engrave the reverse. For the second pass, skip the cut operation. Follow your cutter’s material and positioning instructions; the exact workflow may vary by machine.
Manual fabrication
The project page says manual cutting and drilling are possible. Laser engraving is an easier way to produce the ridges, but the page gives no measured comparison of build time, accuracy, or bubble performance between the methods.

Attach it and try a flight
- Fold a conventional paper airplane.
- Slide the triangular T-slot on the plastic tip over the plane’s nose until it fits snugly.
- Dip the tip in bubble solution.
- Throw the plane, then experiment with different throwing speeds and arcs.
The tip is an attachment, not a powered airplane or a self-contained bubble machine. Its operation depends on the dipped plastic piece meeting the airflow during the toss.

Knetzger reports revising the dimensions, ridge layouts, and number of bubble loops. The final design is symmetrical and can be modified or scaled, but the page text does not specify exact dimensions or validated scaling limits. Use the linked SVG as your reference, and expect that changing the size or fabrication process may require adjustments to suit your paper airplane and material.

The project page provides no controlled measurements for bubble count, flight distance, or flight duration. Treat changes to the tip and throwing technique as experiments rather than proven ways to improve a particular result.
