A paintable-vinyl-wallpaper splashback can give a tired kitchen a patterned, pressed-tin look without covering the wall in tile. The approach reported by Better Homes & Gardens Australia uses a rigid fireboard panel, a smaller MDF shelf, wallpaper paste, primer, three coats of gloss epoxy paint and a silicone-sealed benchtop edge. It is a decorative DIY project rather than a universally tested replacement for tile, so the wall, cooktop exposure and product instructions still determine whether it is appropriate for your kitchen.

The project below follows DIY editor Tiff Bancroft’s kitchen refresh, reported by Jade Coull on October 1, 2024. It explains the materials, cutting and installation sequence, the power-point precaution, and the limits of what the project demonstrates.
What the wallpaper splashback project involves
Bancroft wanted a brighter, more modern kitchen with a strong colour accent while keeping the renovation economical. Instead of tiling directly, she created a removable-looking decorative surface from a cut fireboard sheet. Paintable vinyl wallpaper supplied the pattern; gloss epoxy paint supplied the finished white surface. The same wallpaper was also used on the backing of a cabinet, tying the splashback and storage together.

The finished room combined the white gloss splashback with simple white budget cabinets, a timber benchtop and warm pink and coral paint on the walls and rangehood. The wallpaper imitates the look of pressed tin, so the visual effect comes from texture and pattern rather than grout lines.
Coull’s article calls the idea a tile alternative, but it does not report a project total, measured heat or moisture rating, independent durability testing or a comparison against tile. Treat it as a documented design method, not proof that wallpaper is suitable beside every cooktop.

Have the wallpaper pattern, panel dimensions and appliance positions settled before cutting. A paper or cardboard template can help you confirm the power-point opening and any corners without wasting the board or wallpaper.
Check the wall and the cooking area before cutting
Measure the actual opening
Measure from the benchtop to the underside of the cabinets, then measure across the full section to be covered. Check both ends: walls and cabinets are not always perfectly parallel. Mark the cooktop panel separately if it has a different width or height from the rest of the splashback.
Locate services and obstructions
Mark power points, switches, shelves, cabinet sides and any trim that will meet the panel. The project includes a cut-out for a power point, so locate the faceplate and box before transferring dimensions. Confirm that the panel will not interfere with the cooktop, rangehood or cabinet doors.

Plan the visible joins before applying paste. In this project, the wallpapered panel meets the timber benchtop and the join is sealed with silicone. A planned stopping point gives you a clean line and leaves room for a flexible seal at the worktop edge.

Step-by-step: build and finish the splashback
1. Cut the fireboard and MDF
Transfer your measured splashback and cooktop-panel dimensions to the 2700 × 1200 × 16 mm fireboard. Cut the pieces with a circular saw where a straight cut is required. Mark the 600 × 1800 × 12 mm MDF for the shelf and cut it to the length your layout needs. Keep the finished faces supported and mark the top edge of each piece so orientation does not get lost.
2. Sand and prepare the shelf
Sand the MDF shelf edges so they are smooth and do not telegraph rough fibres through paint or catch wallpaper during installation. Fill small imperfections where needed, then remove dust with a cloth. The feature specifically describes sanding the shelf edges before priming.
3. Prime both panel and MDF
Apply primer to the fireboard panel and MDF. Priming creates a prepared surface for the wallpaper and paint and helps prevent the substrate from absorbing paste or coating unevenly. Let the primer dry according to its product directions before moving on; do not paste onto a tacky or damp surface.
4. Cut the power-point opening
Mark the opening precisely on the panel, drill a starter hole if needed, and use a jigsaw to cut the shape. Test the panel against the wall before applying adhesive. The opening should align with the electrical box and leave the faceplate able to sit correctly once the panel is fixed.
5. Check level and plumb
Offer the dry panel up to the wall and check it with a level. Check plumb at the sides as well as level along the benchtop. Correct the layout or trim the board before adhesive is spread. This dry fit is also the moment to confirm that the shelf, cooktop and cabinet edges line up.
6. Fix the panel to the wall
Apply construction adhesive as directed on its packaging, position the panel and press it into place. The feature describes fixing the panel after checking that it is level and plumb. Use the specified countersink screws where your construction and wall allow, keeping heads below the surface so they can be filled and hidden before decorating.
7. Match, cut and paste the wallpaper
Measure the wallpaper against the installed panel and align the pattern before cutting. Leave enough material to position the repeat accurately, then trim with wallpaper scissors. Brush on wallpaper paste, place the sheet and smooth it from the centre outward with the pasting brush or a clean smoothing tool. Work out bubbles and excess paste while it is workable, then wipe residue from the surface with a cloth.

Pattern matching matters more on a textured design than on a plain sheet. Dry-position adjacent pieces first if the panel is wider than one drop, and keep the repeat facing the same direction. Avoid stretching the vinyl as you position it; a distorted repeat will be obvious after painting.
8. Apply three coats of gloss epoxy paint
Once the pasted wallpaper is ready for coating, use a nap roller to apply the gloss epoxy paint. The reported project uses three coats. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next, following the coating manufacturer’s instructions for recoat conditions. Thin, even passes help preserve the raised pattern and reduce runs around corners.
Bancroft chose epoxy because she considered it wipeable and resistant to heat and moisture. That is her material rationale, not an independently measured performance result. Do not assume the finished wallpaper has a universal heat rating or that any epoxy product is interchangeable with the named coating.
9. Attach the shelf
Position the MDF shelf after the panel and its paint have been prepared. Drill pilot holes where appropriate, use countersink screws so the heads can be filled, and check the shelf remains level. Keep fixings clear of plumbing, electrical cables and appliance housings.

10. Seal the benchtop junction
Run silicone along the join where the wallpapered panel meets the benchtop. Painter’s tape on either side of the joint can help keep the bead straight; remove the tape while the sealant is still workable, following the sealant directions. The seal prevents a visible open joint at the worktop edge, but it does not turn the entire wallpaper system into a tested waterproof assembly.
Electrical and power-tool precautions
The feature tells readers to switch off power at the mains before loosening the power-point faceplate. Follow that instruction exactly and do not work on an electrical fitting that may still be live. If you cannot positively isolate the circuit or are unsure how the faceplate and panel should meet, stop and use a licensed electrician rather than improvising.
Coull’s feature also advises safety glasses, a mask and earmuffs when operating power tools, tying back long hair, and wearing gloves and protective clothing where appropriate. Keep the board supported while cutting, secure loose material, and follow the safety instructions supplied with each tool and coating. These precautions are the project’s reported guidance; they are not an independent electrical or installation assessment.

How to judge whether it suits your kitchen
Heat exposure
Measure the distance between the proposed panel and the cooktop and consult the paint, wallpaper and appliance instructions. The source does not provide a measured heat limit for this particular assembly. A splashback directly behind a high-output burner may face a very different exposure from one beside an induction zone or away from the cooking line.

The project’s epoxy topcoat was selected for expected wipeability and resistance to moisture, and the feature advises wiping cooking splashes promptly. Use a soft cloth and the cleaner approved for your coating; avoid assuming that abrasive pads, solvents or prolonged standing water are safe for the painted wallpaper.
Edges and seams
Inspect the lower silicone joint and any wallpaper seams periodically. Peeling, lifting, swelling or a broken seal is a reason to stop exposing the area to splashes until the cause is corrected. A flexible seal can be renewed, but damaged substrate or wallpaper may require removing the affected section.

“Budget” describes the project’s intent, not a published saving. The feature gives no total material cost, labour value or tile comparison, so a responsible budget must be calculated from your local sheet, wallpaper, adhesive, coating, sealant and tool costs. Reusing tools can lower out-of-pocket spending; buying a circular saw, jigsaw or drill specifically for this job can change the economics substantially.

- Cleaning: assess the finished surface and the manufacturer’s approved cleaners, especially around grease.
- Exposure: match the selected system to the actual heat and moisture next to your appliance.
- Maintenance: consider how you will repair a lifted seam, damaged coating or failed seal.
- Total cost: include consumables, replacement sheets, safety equipment and any electrician’s or installer’s fee.
No comparative test results for these categories are reported in Coull’s feature, so your decision should rely on product documentation and the conditions in your own kitchen.
Common problems and practical fixes
The pattern is misaligned
Stop before pasting the next drop. Re-measure from a fixed edge, identify the repeat and recut if enough wallpaper remains. Trying to hide a shifted repeat under paint usually leaves the texture visibly out of register.

Bubbles appear under the wallpaper
Smooth from the centre outward while the paste is workable. If a bubble remains after the surface has settled, follow the wallpaper manufacturer’s repair guidance rather than injecting an unapproved adhesive or cutting the face at random.
The panel is out of square
Do not rely on the shelf or silicone bead to disguise a large error. Remove or reposition the panel while the construction adhesive allows, or recut before installation. Recheck level and plumb in both directions.
Paint looks uneven
Allow the previous coat to dry fully, then apply the next coat evenly with the nap roller. Runs, thin spots and missed texture are easier to correct before the final coat has cured; use the coating instructions for sanding or recoating decisions.
The lower joint opens
Remove loose sealant, clean and dry the joint, and reseal according to the silicone instructions. If movement, water entry or substrate damage continues, investigate that underlying problem instead of repeatedly adding new beads.
Extending the idea to cabinet backing
Bancroft used the same paintable wallpaper on a cabinet backing as well as the splashback. This is a lower-exposure place to repeat the pattern and can make open shelving or a glass-front cabinet feel intentional. Measure the backing, prime it, match the pattern, paste and smooth the wallpaper, then use the same coating approach only if the paint manufacturer permits it for that substrate.
Keep the cabinet application visually connected to the splashback without forcing a continuous sheet through corners. A deliberate break at a shelf or cabinet divider is easier to align and repair than a stretched piece that must wrap several edges.
What this documented project proves—and what it does not
It demonstrates a sequence that one DIY editor used successfully for her own refresh: rigid panel preparation, paintable vinyl wallpaper, three coats of gloss epoxy and silicone at the benchtop edge. It also shows how colour, a timber worktop and a textured pattern can modernise basic cabinetry.
It does not establish a quantified saving, a certified fire or heat rating, a waterproof classification, expected service life or superiority to tile. Those facts depend on the exact products, installation and kitchen conditions. Use the method as a carefully measured design option, verify every product’s instructions, and choose another splashback system when the exposure exceeds what its documentation permits.
Final decision
A paintable-wallpaper splashback makes sense when your priority is a patterned, paint-finished surface that can be built from sheet material and installed with ordinary DIY tools. The disciplined version is not simply “paste wallpaper near the stove”: it is a level, primed panel with a correctly cut electrical opening, a matched pattern, three fully dried epoxy coats and a sealed benchtop junction. The October 2024 project is a useful model for that workflow, while its lack of cost and performance testing means you must make the final suitability and budget call for your own kitchen.
